I mean I can only fairly compare myself on one bike with myself on another....But if I had to ride a rigid 26" fat bike at jungle or wayway race in any weather short of a blizzard? Pretty sure I could lap myself with my scalpel and a set of 2.1 ignitors.

At 6 mile, I was actually faster on my FS fatty than my FS 29 or HT 29. I can carry more corner speed on the fatty. I'm not in great shape, but can turn a decent lap there because of corner speed. On my 29s, I feel like I have to work getting back up to speed between corners.

I'm clearly outnumbered by the fat haters here. Carry on. But real talk, I'll hang with anyone here on any bike they choose at any venue except for maybe Utah. Utah the person, not the place.
you could probably ride your fat bike on the A ride and hang on too, thats because of you, not the bike 😉

Just because it's being researched doesn't mean it's good. Since you mention 27.5 fat, are you talking like 27.5x4" tires? What's the point? 26x4" fat would be superior in almost every way. More cushion(suspension), higher volume, higher flotation, larger contact patch, and more rim protection. 27.5 fat can fail while it's ahead.
I know we have nothing to compare to, but I don't understand why it would be better in every way. There's no reason a tire of the same width couldn't have a similar contact patch, regardless of tire size. Also I'd imagine a larger sized tire would be designed to be at least proportionately equal in the other characteristics you've listed. When 26" fat bike sales slow down, the marketing formula will recycle itself as we've seen for all mtbs: Materials upgrade, Frt susp, rear susp, wider tires, wheel size....

sending jim to alaska to die cost us 5 large. this is not a bargain.
(btw don't die)

does it come down to being able to ride stuff that is tough on a 26 or even 29 with "small tires"? - the traction factor
or is it
ride in more conditions - snow and sand
or is it
go faster in the short burst
or is it
go faster over a course

for me, it would be more conditions - the opportunity to ride a beach or the snow before it becomes magic.
hit some trails where a big tire wouldn't make ruts
link some stuff together like jim and jason have been doing....

for others, it might be different.

so is it 4+ inch tires
or 3" tires
or 2" tires

well - gee, if it can be done on 2" tires, and i've seen it done on 2" tires, and i can't do it on 2" tires, it must be me.....not the bike.
So i spend $$ to do it, which means it is me, not the bike..

i'm spiraling into one of my things now.....#LGM

Frankly, down south the fat is faster. You can corner much better as well as gain traction anywhere (IMO).

Is it an acquired riding style: yes.

In the rocks the 29"er F/S is faster in my opinion due to the ability to plow through the rocks on the downhill's, but that is my opinion because of my gravity background.

Climbing in the rocks however, well, I like the traction my 4" tire gives me.

Does the short track series this winter has a fat bike class? I smell competition, and someone cooking popcorn in my office.

How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop?

This is my view every time I see new tech that is supposedly going to improve my riding. If I can't even be as fast as the fast guys who ride what I got now I'm seeing that as a flaw on the me as the rider. I don't want my bike determining how skillfull I am. Naturally a good rider will be fast on any rig, but that, again, is on the rider.

i have to agree with this, the engine is the most important thing, not the tool out of the shed you use.

+1

"Three" the owl told me... 😉

Yeah we had a fat bike class this year.

Race 1, Lenosky would have done well in the open class with a fat bike. This was a snow heavy race, he would have been 2nd:

Race 2 was icy, Woody won this and would have come in 13th tied with Clapper:

Race 3 was muddy, Mancuso won and would have been 13th:
http://www.mtbnj.com/shorttrack/results_st3_2015.html

Last race, pretty much dry as it got all spring, Segundo wins, would have been 17th in open:
http://www.mtbnj.com/shorttrack/results_st4_2015.html

Only in the first race was the fat class winner on the lead lap. Races #2 and #3 the fat winner was -1. Last race the fat class winner was lapped twice.

jdog ... Where 'how did you get one to ride? I almost have given up on having one anytime before next summer.

I was at a dealer event

http://www.bicycleretailer.com/indu...s-east-coast-distribution-center#.VigycVyCOK0

Even at this event they only had just a few to ride.

If you are serious about getting one, we should talk this week about fast tracking one.

Keep in mind that you can also just get a horsethief as it is exactly the same frame and fork. You of course will need a second wheelset, which should be interesting to own.

In any case the bike is sick.

I'm in.. Will call the shop.

Leaving the dogs salivating. Is this intentional or did they not anticipate the people's response or is this bike a year ahead of its time?
As it has been conveyed to me, this bike was first shown at the summer dealer event (saddle drive) in Utah. It was very well received and the the pre-booked orders outweighed the forecasted numbers for this bike.

I am not sure if it is the frames, rims or tires that are in high demand, but basically you can't get one of these unless you had prebooked it last August for a spring delivery.

I am stoked on it and I am going to try and get some, but honestly it doesn't look super good.

Very well then. Will see the other companies response to this bike. I haven't bought a new bike in 5years. I'm pretty sure I'm a buy in on this 27.5 plus movement like we talked about on the phone. But not guide brakes. Love Maguras🙂

These guys have an interesting take on the 27.5+

http://cooker27plus.chargebikes.com/

They are distributed by cannondale in the states so we can get them.

As a one time Magura fanboy, I can honestly say the guide is now my benchmark.

Thanks Norm, either way I should give these some thought next year.
