The Garbage Heap

I won't bother defending the guy because in just a handful of posts, his attitude was revealed as clearly awful and this last post was really ugly. I guess I would hope he got a warning first though.

Reading his posts I'd say he got 5 warnings, he just doesn't know his limitations. Right off the bat it was bad.
Back to shaving now- I rode a road bike once and plan to continue to do so. Does that mean I now have to shave or do I get a reprive until I'm no longer wearing tights? How high up does the shaving go? Mountain bikes are easy, just keep pedaling until you have to push, lycra or baggies doesn't matter camelback or bottles its all good.

Don't bother to shave until you crash on the road. Then you will wish you had. All the other questions will be answered as well. 😉

I heard this before, why is this? Having skated for 7 or 8 year I have gotten plenty of road rash, how do hairs complicate that, harder to clean?

I know that day isn't far off, I couldn't believe I actually stayed up on them skinny things.
Anyway-this is the Garbage Heap so back to the nonsense. Sorry for the thread jack😀

Harder to clean and the hairs pull the skin up/out as you slide across the asphalt making the road rash worse.

Good question. I also skated for many years and have the scars on my leg to prove it. I never noticed my hair getting in the way.
Ive gotten some nasty scrapes on my leg playing softball...worse then you may think is possible... Probably my sliding technique... im not exactly Rickey Henderson..

:hmmm:, that just sounds like a reason some roadie came up with so they could shave their legs. how could this be tested as every crash/road surface is different?

Maybe...'just something I've heard for years and makes some sort of sense to me.

This debate has gone on for years. 'Reality is who gives a f***. If ya' wanna' shave your legs, shave 'em. If ya' don't, don't. If you're uncomfortable around a guy who shaves his legs, question your own security in relation to your own masculinity.

Back in the day I started shaving my legs because I would tape my knees for certain activities and decided an entire shaved leg looks less stupid than a 1 foot strip around my knee.

Then when I started riding/training hard, I hated putting sports cream on my hairy legs...

Then I became a roadie and discovered that it was just part of the culture--just like matchy-matchies. And most reasons roadies come up with to shave their legs made some sort of sense to me, whether it be cultural or for the reasons already stated.

With that being said, I haven't shaved my legs in 14 years. If I decide to again, I'll need to borrow a chainsaw from somebody....

I have to admit many of the reasons sound silly individually. When you begin to see all the pros then shaving starts to make sense.

When in the ER getting the surface of your skin scraped with a wire brush by the nurse (this is done to removed the embedded pebbles of asphalt)...you will be thankful that you shaved.

Cycling "road rash" is very strange. It is different from the raspberries you get from baseball or soccer slides. The wound is also different from that of skating and sliding on a smooth half-pipe surface.

You are going faster on a bike so you slide more. Similar to a motorcycle guy on the track. The road rash tends to involve just the very top layer of skin. The farther you slide on the same spot...the more that comes off.

Maybe we should ask Ryan for some pictures! 😱

In this case, the post in question is the equivalent of walking into a restaurant and sticking your dick in the mashed potatoes. While it may be bold, and some people might laugh, nobody's going to complain when they kick you out without a warning. Ultimately the poster was this close to getting a week because I'm sick of moderating people here.

Ok...I just checked all his posts. I honestly had no idea this was the same guy that had had all 5 of his previous posts locked. 2 days is clearly not enough.

Wait, I thought he was banned. Just sent to the box? Psshh, that's nothing.

Ah, I see...well technically we ban him for X days. So his subtitle changes to "banned" for the duration of his stay in the penalty box. I can change the title to "BOXED" and it will change back to beginner/sport/expert after the 2 days.

ok, whats next, the dog ate my homework and now I have to shave me legs 😀

i still don't see how not shaving makes taking a wire brush to raw skin any better. Also ditching a skateboard bombing a hill will give you a pretty bad road rash and is amplified if you are concrete or sidewalk.

The going faster/sliding more is the best argument for the severity of the road rash but I still fail to see the correlation between shaving and the road rash being better/worse. I am getting irratated so I will just leave as, "if I have to ask then I am not cool enough to know"

Or "If I have to explain you wouldn't understand". I think I prefer waxing.

I'm now going out to find some mashed taters

Re: shaving

It's for a few reasons:

- easier to clean after a crash, less likely to get infected, as already said
- much better for massages
- aesthetics. Same as having a squeaky-clean bike.
- aerodynamics. Believe it or not

Steeeeerike One!!!!! :getsome:

My post was my first thought after seeing the 'offensive' post that got moved. Les say I just had a hunch..... I think mine likely came to the heap along with because it wouldn't have made much sense if left in the original thread....and I guess it was strike 5!

finally some answers that make sense, sort of. I would make fun of roadies now but I just ran the numbers and out of 182 days that had some sort of riding this year, only 37 involved the mt bike. fawk.

did you guys know WALTER sang in a band called "Unicorn Warrior"?
