Trail Reports

Over a foot of snow up north in Bergen County. We may not see the trails for a few weeks. Snowshoe and XC skiing should be ideal.

February 11, 2010

Drove by Chimney Rock earlier today on the way to work, its nice and white, a little over a foot of snowfall. Heard on the radio they are expecting another snowfall this Monday (Feb 15), not sure how true it is, but that basically blows.

Hitting the roads on an MTB would be the way to go since I dont have a roadie or a trainer.

I ran past Huber Woods today. Branches down everywhere and that was on the road. Middletown is using their plows to clear trees off the roads then they'll work on the snow. I'm guessing Huber and Hartshorne are going to need some clean-up after the 15" of wet snow melts.

It was a pretty run, blue sky, white snow, and no cars 😀

Up North, I have 7.5" of snow in my yard now. Things should melt more Monday with the sun. Some chance of snow (1-2 inches) on Monday night / Tuesday morning. Clear rest of the week after that. Things may be getting more ridable up here .. curious to see know how much Ringwood is packed down .. esp with reports of Tourne being currently ridable by bruce.b.

The now up here in Essex is unridable. I just tried, it's impossible to get any speed, even downhill. It's like riding in 10" of penut butter. I made it about 10 feet 5 times and resorted to walking back out of the woods.
The snow also packed up in my back wheel and stopped my motion pretty much right away too.

+1 on Luke's thoughts. I tried Allamuchy yesterday with the same results. Even resorted to the rail bed hoping that would have been packed down...no luck

Ended up hitting the road on some local hilly lake roads; was able to get out and enjoy the fresh air, but was filled with a lot of coasting due to my SS. Overall a fun ride!!

Guys, you have to find trails that get enough traffic to pack em down. The snow around here is wet enough that it packs easily. The Tourne was great Sunday morning. The main doubletrack to Birchwood was fast and easy, almost as easy to ride as it is in the summer. The singletrack immediately to the west of it was completely ridable with maybe a dab or two when climbing what are normally very easy climbs when dry. Some of the other singletrack on the west side was good too, tricky, hard work and fun. The sort of conditions where you go a couple hundred feet between dabs.

That was before lunch. I'm betting every morning it will get easier and easier to ride all this week and most of the rest of the trails will open up. Who knows late in the day, it might get too soft. The only things that might kill it are more snow or if it turns to ice, which is very possible.

How about Lewis Morris? Doesn't that get a lot of traffic?

Where are the CC skiers going? If a bunch of them ski a trail you should be able to ride it. For packed trails fatter and bigger and lower pressures will always make it easier. If you're running more than 15 psi you're too high.

Stupid Percocets! I read "ended up hittin the road with a local hillbilly" 😀
I thought the loop we did was pretty awesome, 11 miles on the nose from the park and ride back to my house. For both of us riding that on ss'es I think we kicked some butt! I dont really dig the super anuses in cars though driving like we were inconveniencing them. I could have turned around and done that loop again. we need to REALLY get out and ride til we cant ride anymore..... I always feel like its over before I even get started... like a warm up.
Im throwin the light and blinky on and my clipless Sorels and snow riding tonight! I'll be passin by your place so get ready slacker!

Agree. As per my post in another thread, the good bets in Morris County include Loantaka Park (lots of XC skiers in there, along with dogwalkers, casual hikers, and office workers (during the week) from across the street. The other option is Patriot's Path. Winds through various neighborhoods so gets decent foot traffic. The paved sections closer to Morristown are transformed into a hard packed base after a few days...the dirt sections further west take another day or so, but it's all good. I did a ride out there in December in the snow when everything else was socked in, and it was great. I posted a ride report at the time, but no takers...guess people don't wanna ride somethin' so flat? But if you lean to the MTB side of things, it beats riding the road!

Lew Mo is 50/50...near the roads, the trails get traffic, but most casual walkers don't venture into mid-park

Stewart is very ridable with 0-3" of crunchy snow. I started at 4:30PM and it was a bit soft, but by the time sun went down at 6PM it was niceee, There was a guy riding with t-shirt and shorts :getsome:

I did the SS-a-polooza loop from last year w/o too much problems. About half of that loop was ridden, so I broke in the other virgin half 😀 If you've only ridden Stewart just for the races, you're just scratching the surface of that place. I've seen tracks for a 40 mile loop in there, and I know there's still more probably like 50 maybe even 60.

On one section, it looked like someone took a pickaxe and mashed up the trails for a mile. Horses?

Looking at Hartshorne or 6miles...shit or anything. any updates, Its been 19days off the mtb for me

We hit 6 mile today with Tony P.

It was much harder than any other time because well, it was over a foot and wet. And you remember the other time 😉

We took the road back at Middlebush.

Still fun if you're into it.

Shit. I may just take one of the big wheels out and go pedal around locally. Some dirt bike trails and what not.

Yeah, I'm glad I passed on that invite. I think I've done 3 years worth of snow rides at 6-mile in the last two months.
