Trail Reports

Mahlon is jolly good and surprisingly unridden. No tire tracks at all on the Wall Reroute and Stone Gate. That's since Tuesday night's snow. An inch or less everywhere.

Cool...gonna' try to get up there in the next hour or two.

Is it icy enough to chuck the Nokian's on or not required?

The only ice I found was a small patch at the bottom of Cascade and a little bit on Devil's Staircase where Stone gate dumps out onto it. I was able to ride the later, but walked the little bit on Cascade. If they're not already on, I wouldn't bother.

that's because i ran of time that day 😀

did you see where i fell on cascade? i tried to clear away some snow so that the ice is visible .. it's quite nasty cause the ice patch is on a hill

Conditions are indeed pretty good at Mahlon, not that I got to enjoy them very much

Snapped my chain on the hill right after the bridge @ the bottom of the wall. Fixed it (brrr that wind is cold!). Of course when I was fixing the chain, my knee puffed up from where I smacked it on the handlebar when the chain broke. 'Looks like I have a half a tennis ball strapped to the inside of my left knee.

Decided to press on, but damn, my knee hurt in the top 1/3 of the pedal stroke and it was getting pretty stiff. 'Figured I'd just keep a nice low gear and spin my way through the ride....but noo...

Chain skip, skip, drop! Sh!t! Messed around with a few things and couldn't figure out exactly what was f'd up. Still chain skip, skip, drop. Guessing the chain itself...at any rate, I wasn't going to stand out there in 22 degree weather with wind gusts blowing up my backside and mess with it...so I bailed.

Ever have one of those weeks where seemingly everything was fighting you?

Gears are evil.:getsome:

Edit: Yup, another link was about to blow...weird. Gears are still evil.

I figured 1 of the 2 sets of tracks I saw out there were you. Strangely, there were a bunch of tracks on the WMA side of the rail trail coming from Saffin Pond. But 2 in half the park and none on the other side of the park.

And yeah, it was pretty obvious where you bit the dust on Cascade. Did you actually make snow angels or was that the natural outline? 😉

Any Hartshorne reports?
Snowshoed there today, saw a few tire tracks. Snow depth was pretty variable, we were guessing from the wind blowing the powder into lower-lying areas. Probably 6-8+ inches all in all.

I'd say it might be ridable, but pretty far from what I'd call good snow riding conditions.

I think my friend who lives literally across the street is gonna go in there tomorrow with his studded tires, so I may have a better report tomorrow later in the day.

:hmmm: One of those tracks was definitely mine .. I started at Saffin and went across to the rail trail to the WMA single track. From there I followed Fogerson's 17 mile loop from the wiki. I had to back track a few spots from making a wrong turn, so that may account for the 2 tracks, but maybe not.

Probably too late for a trail report,

but Waway was great today...some icy spots here and there and snow coverage varied depending on the trails but overall very good conditions.

Lake riding was good too...no studs required.

Not in NJ, but conditions were quite good at Blue Mt yesterday. Some ice and some light slow pack in spots, but overall very good winter conditions. Rode: Depew, monster, MFT, lower stinger, sis and 2 live crew.

OK, bikes and legs are screaming at me to be used/abused. Great last weekend of hartshorne/allaire but with impending storm on Wednesday I'm thinking of heading north during the day tomorrow(Tues) to try to get something in before another storm. How's Lewis Morris? Trying to keep drive time just over an hour from Monmouth Co.
thanks

Lewis Morris and PP are both in great riding shape.

This report probably won't matter after tonight, but Chimney Rock this morning was somewhat packed down in most parts. Some climbs were still pretty tough for me, but "drifting" on the downhills were really fun. The end parts of yellow were not ridden at all except for some skis. One part had no tracks at all so I made some 😀

Jungle Hab

The Jungle was in surprisingly good shape today.
Rode Animal Chute, Warthog, Otter Slide, newest of new trails...all good.

View on Animal Chute

Finally espied the famous JH gnome in his tree home

Most central nj trails are perfect. . . .for building snow tunnels and forts.

Looks like the trainer is getting some extra action for awhile.
