the surf SUCKS

good question

How do you people keep your face from freezing off?

Today (or now yesterday) wasn't too bad, didn't do anything to protect the face but did get a lil windburn. Last week though when the windchills were 8 degrees on my dawn patrol, I put a bunch of vaseline on to protect the skin a bit, doesn't keep it warmer so much as it does keep the skin from burning and drying up. I'm generally more comfortable surfing for three hours in the winter than I am riding my bike for two, my toes hate riding the bike in this cold weather. Plus, the water temp is 40, it's warmer than the air temp. Also, a seal came and visited me in the surf today, which was cool and unusual, which helped not focus on the cold. That was a first, and pretty damn cool too.

Oh wow! What did it do? I always forget there are seal around here too.

Surf

It was really incredible today 4-6ft with some 7ft sets for the incoming 10a-1p and it was perfect. Light offshore winds and barreling across the sandbar one after the next. Northside Casino Pier looking all-time.:D:D:rofl:

the lanes and seals and more surf

The Lanes does rule, haven't been there a lot lately, gotta change that.
As for my seal friend, he/she popped it's head outta the water from about twenty yards away and was checkin me out, did that a couple times, then left (seal update in following sentences).
Thursday the 19th (I think) was all time badass. I'll call it 6ft, but we were droppin peaks that were easy two foot overhead with a mellow drop and fun glassy lines, the wind picked up from the west pretty hard, but it stayed fun all day and I surfed for 3 hrs. Then, went to Bay Head and watched a handful of guys get DRILLED, they only made about 1 in 5 waves, but that 1 wave was serious and had a gaping tube.
I also went out dawn patrol again on fri, the 20th I think, and scored again. Most places were weak and small, but the swell was amplified where I was at I every wave I took was 3-4 ft super glassy, fast and fun. I surfed alone, or +1 for four hours, I couldn't drag myself from the fun surf, not like thursday in that there was no consequence for wiping out and u could just throw down moves. Also, my seal friend came back for a visit, this time the little feller came in just wayyyy too close for my liking. I was standing on the sandbar keeping the wind from pushing me outta my lineup spot, when all of a sudden, mr or ms seal pops his head outta the water within ten feet of me and just stares me down. I just stood there. After ten or fifteen seconds he disappeared and then popped up a few more times from about 20 yards away, obviously checking me out. It was wayyy cool, but a bit freaky too as I hear they're not always the nicest creatures to meet in the water. I think I've made a friend, haha. Soooooo much fun, now my back is dying and I'm paying for surfing (or doing anything for that matter) so soon after throwing out my back. It was well worth it, wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, til next swell!!!!!!!!! Lates!!!

3 days of fun....

Surfed Squan fri pm and got some fun 5 ft peaks, not great down the line but plenty fun and wayyy better than what I saw rollin in @ Bayhead.
Sat I rode Mantaloking and it was sweet! 4 ft, super glassy, steep, barreling and fun, til the tide went out and everything shut down.
Sun, back to Mantaloking, 2-3 ft and steep, glassy fun. Got a bit small into the low tide, but worth the erly wake up.
Keep yer eyes open folks, wind is back outta the NE, should be swell for the next couple of days. Lates.

I saw it tuesday at 18th ave - there was some good swells but it was chop.

I just moved into West Belmar and will be getting back in the water this fall. Gotta finish off the DH race season first. I used to surf year round about 15 years ago. I hope wetsuit technology has advanced. I remember being purple. :(

best wetsuits EVER!!!

Referencing the last post, wetsuit technology rulz right now. I haven't surfed a nj winter in def 15 years, this year I bought an excel 543 (based on the fit/flex of their 32) and I've never been warmer in the winter. Last week I put in a 5.5 hour session in, and they're sellin 654's now too and 7mm boots! Get on it, the trails were sloppy this winter but the surf has been awesome, at least two good days a week and the past two weeks have been almost non stop.

bombers today

Surfed Squan today, about 10-15 guys in the water, mostly 1st peak. BIG bombers rollin in, drops were easy head and a half this morning but pretty mellow. The lines were dicey and sectioning but some waves went wayyy down the line. Some guys riding guns even, not necessary, but "smoke em if ya got em" when else u gonna use a rhino chaser in nj.
I surfed 2nd peak solo which was a shorter wave but steeper on the takeoff and more wall to it. It was so fun, but gettin caught inside on a three wave set pro'ly wasn't fun. I'm finding out just how versatile a lil quad fish can really be, and so far that board has not disappointed.
Get on it for the morning peeps should be light offshores!!!!
PS-surfline.com has apparently started measuring waves "hawaiian style", cuz they have been consistantly undersizing the surf reports for at least two weeks now. Works for me though, noone shows up.

Yep, now that I live 2 miles from the beach I definitely want to start surfing again. I should be ready to go by the Fall. I have a lot of stuff to do on the house first. I can't wait to hit the waves again - going back to my roots as a surf skate punk ass kid. Woohoo!

oh yeah

This is a really long swell. Not many places breaking right for it so far. I did find some head high, fun, "L" shaped bowls this am, caught two fun ones and promptly put another nice crack in my new "tuff lite" fishy. Love the way the board floats, paddles and most of all, rides,,, but "tuff" it aint, it's solid to the point that it splits, then it's UGLY.
I'll be riding the backup board tomorrow, and some SE swell should mix in with this NE, hopefully frame this swell up a bit better.

agreed sir

Windy as hell too, and tons of people on it due to it being a weekend, grrr to that bidness. Fun jus the same.
Tues was super fun too, 4-5 ft, real glassy, not as windy, only 8 guys out at my usual jaunt, weekday sessions RULE!
Apparently nothing at all in the forecast, maybe lil somethin over the weekend, crossin fingers!
