That is very good advice "race your own race". I know It would death if I jump out and try to hold a pace that is above my comfort zone. I'm actually very nervious to see how my body will hold up. I'm not trying to be a jerk but I've put in some work over the winter and I'm just very anxious to see it pay off. Race your own race will stick In my head for a long time

You should have done Fair Hill as your first sport race. A bit more forgiving of a distance.

pixy's word to new racers: training was done a few days ago. Don't over do it this week. Don't do or eat anything new. Show up at the race early and get in a warm up. Don't place too much importance on the result, but be ready to learn stuff you never thought about. Relax and most of all, have fun. 🙂

Thanks for the tips, Ruth!! Does this mean no heavy beer drinking the night before too ?😛uke:

Preride of 1 lap on most of the course is done. What is up with all the black snakes? I saw 2 that were 4 foot at the smallest. I hate snakes.

Those are Black Rat Snakes. They are harmless. It's funny that you mention it because I saw 5, yes F-I-V-E of them yesterday on the side of the road. Not all at once. they where all very large.

"race your own race"--YES...this will be my first race. I will need to remind myself to not get caught up with the lightning pace, and assume the strategy of the tortoise, "for Slow and Steady won the race!"

Really, I just want to finish...and maybe hopefully want to do it again down the road.

I like the snakes there, they are nature's adrenaline booster.

Here's a water snake in the middle of the trail at 6 miles. My buddy almost jumped off his bike when he saw it.

I was up there yesterday, and a little moisture may help keep the dust down and scare the snakes off, no?

I'm camping up there with a few of my teammates on Sat night and I think we're going to have prerace burrito cravings. Anyone know of a good burrito joint in the area or in Newburgh?

Why don't you just bring your own burrito stuff? Pre cook the rice and stick it in a cooler with the sour cream, guac and beer. The only addition "thing" you'll need to pack is a pan.
