so far the score is fat-arse me 3, spin bikes zero.

So let me get this straight. You know how to break these bikes. So you get on them, turn the knob until it breaks, and then....?

I'm confused. Are you breaking these bikes to say you did it? Or are these the worst bikes ever made? Or do they just crumble over when you look at them?

In 2 weeks there won't be any bikes left at this pace.

i think he actually broke that bike so his 1,000th post might not seem so trivial. On a related subject, I hit 2,000, Heythorp and Jake broke 1,000 and Norm & Sean are kissing the 1,000 mark. We are pathetic.

ok, so i the third really isn't confirmed, and i'm not trying to break them. the first one i didn't know i broke until i broke the second one. i'm not sure if they are really "broken" or if they will now just need some greg lemond service tech to put a new pin in it. not to mention i know less about spin bikes than actual bikes so i'm going by what the girl told me on tuesday when i asked what it meant when the tension thingy clicked.

the last one, yesterday, i had a ton of tension on and was pedaling out of the saddle for like five minutes (the spin teacher lady was insane) and the cranks just started making an awful noise.

jeez norm, you actually made me feel bad. why don't you go back to the other thread and see if you can convince Jersey_Girl_Rides to email you the pics after she seduces her boss's partner.

Sean and I joined at about the same time, and he has twice the # of posts as me. I think they are all on his training log...

LOL, ok.

But don't feel too bad. Long after you stopped going to the gym they'll be collecting your monthly payment. By the end of the year you'll have financed their whole goddamn spin room.

oh trust me, i know. i'm trying not to be "that guy" who pay the membership and never goes. as you (and every other regular here) probably know, i worked at a gym forever and this is the first time in years i've paid a membership fee. sux big time.

well, yesterday was the official mary shake down run. myself, heythorp and norm set out early at lewis morris with three SS bikes intent on breaking it down to see what was good, bad, what the differences were etc. norm was on a karate monkey, heythorp was on his sass and i was on my mary.

so here are the results:

tree: 1
mary: 0

yeah, there are no freaking results. about two miles into the ride, i came off a root sketchy, landed sketchy and smacked a tree. then out of courtsey i suppose, norm ran me over. norm running me over "wasn't too hard" so i'm ok. the bike, however, another story. front rim is completely taco'd which one would expect hitting a tree at 15 mph (i won't even get into the fact that the battery in my scrambler died AND i was out of gas and had to wait an hour for norm and heythorp to get back...) i'll be up at cycle works either today or tomorrow to get an assessment on the damage.

hopefully, i'm given the green light to ride again next week and i'm not put on reclusion for the next six months like heythorp thinks. there was some positive learning though: at least the bottom bracket didn't give!

ugh, what a freakin' day.

If you are going to rebuild the wheel you might consider getting a new front hub as well. That hub is Ok but not great. Just loose ball bearings.

Haro sells that front wheel complete for about $159.

i really hope i don't have to rebuild it...but it looks worse than my bontrager rear did when i taco'd that.

yeah, yesterday was certainly an interesting day. i am glad that i wasn't riding behind norm for two hours though.

edit: btw...what GPS data? the part where it stop suddenly when i hit the tree??

No I wasn't really farting all day, though I often do.

And don't blame me, I was out for a bike ride. When I see someone laying on the trail catching a few Z's, you have to figure they get what they deserve.

My serious question is this. I was behind you in that section and in watching you I notice that you don't really pick lines, you just go. Also, you came down from that little jump sideways, which explains to me why the wheel gave out more than the base/root of the tree being there. Are you really going to be able to get a 29" wheel strong enough to be able to deal with difficult lines and a fully weighted bike coming down at odd angles? I'm not sure such an animal exists.

In the end you may have such thick gauge spokes and heavy rims that your bike is well into the 30# realm.

to be honest, i followed heythorp so blame him for the line (ok, he didn't jump the root). as for that bike, well, i sort of figured yesterday on my slowwwwww ride home that there is no way i can beat on mary the way i beat on my fuel...it just isn't going to happen. until i drop 30 lbs that bike is staying on tera firma. even then it may not see a drop of air time.

The lines was a general comment, I wasn't watching where you actually were on your incident. I did see you shortly after, catching some rays.

I used to bend a lot of rims years ago. I rode heavy, but of course I was heavy, as heavy as you or more. And I also spent a lot of time in the saddle. I learned to ride lighter, coming out of the saddle more, and of course got lighter. I never bend rims anymore. With the FS that obviously becomes even less of an issue. But even before the FS I haven't bent a rim in many years.

I used to reek havok on rims. I juts didnt know what the hell i was doing when i was riding. Knock on wood, i havent really had issues with that any more. but it was ugly for a while

nothing seems to be my friend on a bike lately...whether it's in a gym, on a trail or the road. ping, pop, pow are three things i hear a lot.

since i had john build me my rims for the 26" fuel, i've beat the snot outta them and not so much as a wiggle, so that's good. part of me making this public statement was so that i would get motivated, really motivated, to get back into cardio shape. i've been in good gym rat shape for 10 years but my cardio has been terrible. with my new love of mt. biking, i want to be lighter...or as light as i can be. that will solve a lot of problems. but, now that i think about it, i didn't really start breaking parts (other than a seat) until i got in better shape. i had no problems when i was 250. i'm gonna have to mull on that for a bit. anyway, it's to the gym today. probably some power cleans than 30 or 40 minutes on the spin bike.

if you had identical blonde haired, blue eyed twin girls, you wouldn't put down the weights either.

If you want to loose weight and get stronger you might try a natural foods diet. I have been using it loosely for about a month.

Nothing too crazy. My wife is working on her Masters in Nutrition so she has been guiding me along.

I had some blood work done which can be a helpful guide.

I have been taking a good mix of vitamins along with as much vegtables as I can eat. I have been avoiding sweets and fried food as much as I can.

Lots of fish chicken and turkey. No red meat. More than 1/2 of everything we are eating is organic.

This might not work for you but it has been great for me.

Oh yeah I also stopped drinking for over a month. I am back to a little red wine but not every day like a while back.

45 minutes on the elipical 3-5 days a week mixed with 5-10 hours on the bike. Light weight with high reps in the gym.

This has worked mostly since my wife is also doing it. This would be much harder on my own. I admit that a sometimes slip but that is the whole point. It isn't a punishment. Once the results came I wanted to stick with it.

good luck

j
