my public statement

funny you mention drinking. i had my first beers in like a week on friday night. sometimes during the week i'll have a glass of red wine or a couple beers. not bud light mind you, but craft stuff so i feel like like an alcoholic if it happens two or three nights in a row. anyway, i wasn't drinking at all and i didn't even realize it. but, since i made this public statement, i've gone real, real clean with my eating. kashi, soy milk, even more veggies and whole grains. i feel a lot better, but i still haven't lost any real weight. who knows.

You do realize, adding lettuce tomato and onion to the Double Bacon Cheeseburger does not count?

ha ha. but seriously...what about bacon in the kashi?? 😀

according to the scale at the gym, i'm down four pounds. imagine that...rabbit food and hard work actually makes things happen! brilliant!!

at any rate, 25 min on the spin bike today. i think they fixed the tensioner b/c it provided A LOT more resistance than the last time i was on this bike. i cut it short b/c i don't want to over train myself and get hurt (if that is even possible right now).

also did about 10 sets of power cleans. doing sets of more than eight of these things is just stupid so i wound up doing 4x6 @ 135, 3x3 @ 185, 1x3 @ 225 then 3x2 @ 135 for full-on olympic style overhead. they bringth the suck.

edit: well, since this has turned from a me calling out heythorp thing to a full fledged training blog and diary thing, i moved it out of OT to nutrition & training. hopefully it doesn't tarnish sean's actual blog that involves actual bike riding v. the sissy spinning that i'm doing.

today is/was an off day. my body is pretty beat after the power cleans yesterday and combined with my daughter getting up at 4:00 am i'm shot. i may go out and spin around on the mary, but the magic 8 ball is telling me it's not likely. tomorrow i'll eat more rabbit food and hit the spin bike for 45 minutes.

i did manage to ride around the shop a couple of times but i'm not sure that counts.

well, today i got in 11 what i'll refer to as cyclocross miles. i rolled the dice, went to LM and it was closed until 12:00. tried to get in at 12:00 and the guy told me 12:15. so i rode PP from the sketchy heythorp lot, out to 24 the up 24 past LM and picked up PP to mendham. took the road back through brookside. i was thankful that i:

1. wore my sunglasses
2. wore my underarmour base layer. it's freaking cold on the road.

just to put everyone's mind at ease, i hit a few more roots and the front rim held. i think we can now safely assume, at least with 80% certainty, that i may have hit that only available tree just after the only available rock on PP.

i also learned that 32x20 gearing, while nice is the woods is WAY high on the road.

edit: oh, one more thing: i learned that my scrabler is actually going about 8 mph faster than my speedo indicates. another wonderful bug to be worked out.

Kinda hung up on that one now aren't ya?

Did a police officer help you figure that out? :hmmm:

no, i've actually been wanting to check it with the GPS for awhile now. so i left it on while i drove home and checked it v. the speedo.

nah, just wanted to put your mind at ease norm. that's all.
😀

i still don't have a really good feel for the mary...i mean it seems to be a good to ride but i still haven't done much with her. it's a fun bike, but i really can't pass judgement until i get at least 2.8 miles without some kind of rider induced bike failure.

i do, however, think i have enough miles to comment on the mary bars. i was very skeptical of them at first, but for a pure cross country bar, i think they perform well. the position is VERY comfortable and natural. i don't think i'd ever put them on my fuel, but that's another story.

i think sean in particular would really like these bars.

well, another early am on the spin bike. the woman that taught class this am was the same that beat the crap outta me last week when she subbed for the woman who i guess is the usual teacher.

anyway, the last thing i wanted this morning was to be out of the saddle for a full 15 minutes. it was grueling and painful, but puts me one step closer to dropping 30lbs and losing heythorp on the needle.

i think i lost a couple more pounds too, but i haven't done a "apples to apples" weight comparison. either way i feel better and that's the important thing.

Jake - when do yuo want to start the AMs at kv? I was thinking sometime early March, tues/thurs will work best for me.

if there is good light, than sure, i'm down. otherwise (unless i pick up a lighting system) i'm gonna have to wait.

but yeah, i can work on the tues/thurs split.

well, you lemme know. the only reason i'm spinning right now is b/c it's too damn cold and there is no daylight to ride in. not even i'm that stupid (anymore).

put in 7.5 miles on the mary today at KVSP. with the weather forecast to turn (much) colder over the weekend, i figured i should get some outdoor riding in. after very little thought, i decided on KVSP b/c i was 0-2 at lewis morris with the mary. i was only looking for a "light" ride so i didn't ride switch or needle (i know, i know). i've been on a bike four days this week and for me this early in the season, that's a lot.

some observations:

-a full rigid bike is tough on the body. yes, a 29er does cut down on the little chatter a bit and the bike really is a TON of fun. i didn't really experience any of the sluggishness in turns that norm felt with the Karate Monkey he rode and the bike was very responsive. hills on the mary just feel smaller. don't know why but i hope they stay that way! my verdict on the mary bars is that i like them for this bike. very natural feeling. i honestly thought that tight turning was going to be an issue, so far that's not the case.

-the wtb exiwolfs are really, really not good in mud. there were a couple of times that i almost fell and one time that i did just pedaling on a flat section b/c the wheels went out from underneath me. they pack up quick and don't shed well. i think in the dead of summer in very dry conditions, these things would rip. i'll deal with them through the winter but come spring when it gets sloppy, new tires are a must.

tomorrow, jake rests. well, as much as one can while watching the wee ones.

Jake - good job getting out this week.

*****.

Go faster!

my verdict on the mary bars is that i like them for this bike.

The mechanic at my shop (Tony, he just joined mtbnj) loves the bars. Says he feels more opened up in his breathing. I would have loved to try them last weekend.

IMO everything sucks ass in the mud.
