it's still dark right now and it's 11* at the house. i don't think either of us want to ride in this.

Wow!!! you even bail on your own rides!!!!!!!!!! Tis truly unbelievable.

you mo-mo, i wasn't bailing (ah, now i get it) on my own ride!

shaggz said my times were to late for him. i was pointing out that the time that would've been ok for him it was dark AND cold.

wow

well, as advertised, i "rode" lower needle, needle, switch and the lake today.

for those of you interested in reading some serious b!tching, continue. otherwise...punch out...NOW!

i felt abosolutely miserable and it was probably the most painful seven miles i've ridden since i first got back on a bike almost two years ago.

i'm still trying to convince myself that it was the cold...or the fact that i "rode" hard yesterday...or something. anything. i don't know. i didn't expect to clear needle (as a side note, the level of fitness needed to do this on an SS is fawking redonkulous) but i expected a little more.

makes me wonder why the fawk i am beating on myself like this for in the middle of the winter....eating fawking bird food. i won't need to worry about beating heythorp up needle b/c the fawking needle itself kicked my fat, slow, still outta shape @ss.

for those of you with tiny violins, play 'em if you got 'em.

besides ss, you got big wheels, too.

take it from where it is coming from, but from what has been explained to me and stuff i read, the winter is all about base/TIS - endurance. maybe you are not focusing your workouts properly, or overtraining? Someone with more experience, please step in...

you asked for it

Relax it's only the middle of Feb. If you still feel like this at the the end of April then you can get all upset. Remember you are building up to something & it can be a slow process. Plus indoor riding helps but it's never the same as the real thing. Keep pedaling & remember this is fun.

i know it's supposed to be fun and that is really what was missing today: fun.

i started out wanting to be there but then it just turned into a grind. but there was no way i was quitting until i did what i said i was going to do.

i know indoor is no substitute for real riding. it's like lifting...you can't practice lifting big weights (which, coincidently, i can't do anymore either) without actually lifting big weights.

i'll have a few beers tonight and forget all about this tomorrow.

Ok, first off, I'm no expert and don't claim to be but I remember back in early autumn I;d been going to the spin classes a lot and drove to Tourne fully intent on kicking that hill's arse in a higher gear than ever.

I parked up, got in the mode and began pedaling. I had to stop 3 times on the way up and it really pissed me off. I'd not had to stop for a good 6 months before that ride.

My theory, and I proved I was right the very next time I went, was that I parked in the car park at the base of the "fire road" climb and just went straight into it - no pre-miles under my belt for the day.

The next time I went there I parked in the Lake car park, next to where the swimming lanes are, rode in for about 2 or 3 miles and then tackled the hill - no problems (well, I was knackered and almost puked at the top but I didn't stop). So my morale of the story for mysel fis that I need to work up a sweat before tackling the tougher hills on a trail...

No big deal, it happens. Use it to train or practice better. If you're angry, be angry. Spin class isn't the same, but you can get plenty of benefit from riding inside. People who lift in the offseason often times see a drop in performance right away. Your legs are just tired. You're not overtained, you're just not where you might think you are, or want to be. Warming up is always good too.

right again norm. i'm REAL competitive and take things like this seriously. more competitive with myself than with others...most of the time. this was an eye opener for me and a learning experience. it's the middle of february. i'll keep after it, keep pushing. next time i ride the needle i'll have a very different mindset.

taint the same

🙂

We have 3 big gyms near the shop so we sell a TON of shoes for spin classes. Many of these folks do 5 spin classes a week. They do 12 hour spin classes for charity.

Every spring I sell a bunch of road bikes to this crew and they expect to be Lance the first day out. They are not.

Basically my theory is that while spinning is way better than sitting on the couch eating Bon-Bons, spinning has little impact on your riding.

If you do a lot of spin classes you will however get really good at spin classes.

I don't think you're wrong. But I will say 2 things. First, I did say "riding inside" because I don't actually believe in spin classes. I think you would get more from the exercise bike than the spin classes. There are cat 4/5 racers who actually do this in the offseason. The second is that Jake is coming in at a pretty low level of cycling fitness relative, which means almost any kind of riding will help him. At a certain point of fitness you lose benefits from spinning and lifting, but I don't think Jake is at that point yet.

For me the winter is about doing other things that might also add to my fitness. I love to Snowboard, Snowshoe and XC ski. I also like doing a mellow mt bike ride with some tool strapped to my back so I can do some trail work.

Ten years ago I was riding rollers a bunch in the winter and I actully found them fun. I have never been a big fan of a regular trainer.

***Shameless plug warning****

I have a bunch of Cyclops Fluid 2 and Blackburn Ultra trainers left so they are both $100 off now.. $199 takes either. These are both great units.

Also 40% off all winter gear and 50% off all womens winter gear. And yes there is a lot left to choose from.

Big Bird

😀
because I don't actually believe in spin classes. .

They really do exist. They all thought Big Bird was crazy for a long time since no one but him saw snuffaluffagus. Eventually others saw him,

Believe!!
