Matt, I know it is, but its what I have. Hopefully they get it all straightened out and posted up online.
My race recap:
I was really looking foward to the race. The course was supposed to be cool, and it lived up to the hype. I was feeling pretty tired in the morning, but was optimistic that I would come around by start time. Dr. Rob (map2195874509823) and I got up there right about 8:30ish, registered and got dressed real quick, and headed out for a warm-up/preride lap. As usual, I felt like crap off the get. I stink at riding cold, racing or not it always takes me a bit to get going. First climb was rough, but then I started settling in. We did a full loop and got back with about 10 minutes to spare to line up.
Cat2 set off before Cat3, which was a new situation for me. At Wawayanda, my group went out first, so I was riding alone almost the whole time. At Tymor, my group was the third group out or so, so I got a little more experience riding with other riders on the course. This time I knew there would be a ton of racers out there with only 1 minute between groups and all of cat2 already on the course. My group was pretty big itself, so I lined up in the front with the goal of trying to be towards the front for the first climb.
At the first climb, there was a lead pack of about 4 or 5 riders about 20 yards in front of me, the rest of the field behind me. Everyone was keeping it pretty steady up the climb, no one trying to really kill it. As we hit the second half of the climb, I decided it would be a good time to make my move, as I didn't want to get caught behind the pack in the tighter, faster single track. I closed the gap, the pack was riding real tight, and right before the crest I passed the whole pack in one shot. It took a big burst, but thanks to the pre ride I knew there was a nice downhill ahead to catch my breath. I laid it down on the down the downhill to try to get a little seperation.
I got out in front early on in Wawayanda, raced the whole time out in front, and with about a mile to go I got caught from behind and passed. At Tymor, racing with more racers on the course, I found myself repeatedly catching a rider, then just settling in behind them for a bit rather than passing them right away. Lessons learned. For this race, I wasn't having any of that. I got on it, and I kept on it, almost too much at times. At one point I went over the bars on a loose down hill. Several other times I found myself riding downright sloppy.
There were a ton of riders on the course, and I just kept trying to pass them as quickly as I could as I came to them. At the same time, I was reminding myself what happened to me at Wawayanda and telling myself to just keep on it. First lap was smooth, cleared all the climbs. Second lap I still felt good. I took it a little easier on some of the climbs, but kept trying to chase any zombies that I saw down. I got some good experience killing zombies at the Stoopid 50, because the racers there were actual zombies. I cleared all the climbs, and judging by the amount of people walking them, I was thinking that alone was a good sign that I might be able to pull it off. Riding through the last section of the course seemed to take forever. I knew the end was near, but i was praying I didn't get caught from behind. At this point it was impossible to tell what classes racers were in. I finally made it to the field and sprinted to the finish. My first 1st place, the one I've been waiting for 😀
Thanks to all the MTBNJ'ers who have shared their knowledge and helped me along the way. I've done 4 races this season, earned 3 podiums, learned a lot and had a lot of fun along the way. I'll see everyone at Lewis Morris, except this time I'll be in Cat2 😉
