BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Only had a short time today for a ride so decided to try to maximize by hitting a local park for the "new" points. I used to ride this place quite a bit when I first started riding about 7 years ago. I stopped going there as it is pretty small and is usually overgrown in the summer. Mostly fisherman's trails and deer paths.

When I used to go there I think that a few locals were using it too, so there was a semi-defined path throughout... not any more. Many downed trees and erosion and I was constantly back-tracking or hiking. Still OK and frozen and good to be out on the MTB. Note the entrance road name: "Sewer Bed Road".

there is an old rail trail in there - a siding off the CNJ line where they park the trains. not sure where it went from there tho -

Pat,

We could string this place, the Minneakoning trails and Deer Path Park together for an "Epic" 3 park ride. 🙄 😀

Lincoln Drive trails to Schuylkill River Trail and some Roxborough Cobblestone repeats until dark. Very fun day, but the hill repeats were brutal on tired legs. Super steep. The descents were cold too. I planned on 3 trips up and down and did 3.5 so that didn't suck. Ended with a little bonus spin to the Strawberry Mansion bridge from Manyunk to hit 45 mins on the SRT.

Ride, Cobbles, SRT, Lincoln Trails. 4.

Thought a ride was not an option today because in Harrisburg for work but got home alittle earlier than expected and snuck out to hit the trails in the woods between my development and Rider University. I explored this stuff years ago and it is all wetland and utility easement and this ride reminded me why I don't go back there. Easily 45 min in the woods consisting of double track, MUT, and old tree farm and multiple deer running around at mach speed. Looped around the back of Rider University. Finished the ride with some development cruising.

Rode over to Tatum Park to get it in before the snow/sleet/rain arrives. The single track was pretty squishy (at least the stuff up front) and rutted up 😡, so I stuck to riding around the field edges. Shortly after entering the park, I heard a pack of some wild animal (coyotes?) howling away, but fortunately didn't encounter any during my ride.

Fat Bikes, Yeah!

I am sure all the new fat bike owners were watching the weather closely because fat bike are perfect for snow and epic rides will be sure to follow. Woke up to about 4" of snow and it was just starting to rain, hard points!! yes!!

I updated my garmin yesterday and it was taking forever tp turn on, so i went with the strava app. Turned on a mile into my ride and was on 5 min before that, thanks garmin!. Very light rain right from the start. The road that takes me to Mercer Meadows was not plowed yet so it was slow going to get there with some car tracks already on the road I was getting that wishy washy front tire and it was tough to find a place to make a fresh tracks.

Once in the park, very slow going, slow enough that if I saw Bunnicula, I would have been vampire bunny prey.

No problem making a 45 min loop as I was just grinding in a low gear. The snow made me realize that this place is one big false flat and it is weird not being able to coast at all. Have to say my quads were burning like a mofo. Lots of small animal tracks everywhere and one where I am pretty sure a fox got a bunny. Surely not bunnicla but a lesser bunny. Roads were clear on the way home and they only plowed and didnt salt, which much better because the salt makes the snow stick to your tires like glue. Was raining harder on the way back and chilled me down pretty quickly.

So Slow Even Bunnicula Would Have Been Able to Prey on Me
