BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Was hoping for a multi-parker exploration this morning, but opted to sleep in. Went out for a ride with Ebineezer at the local trails. Looking like I'll have to pull off something to keep in the running this week.

Then he egged me on to do this:

when i had to shack back up with my parents many many years ago i found some trails that you should check next lesson. head to deer path park/henry buell trail.

last time i was there (it feels like ancient history now - looks like i rated it on mtbr in 2003) it was a weird out and back. a mix of horse trails, kinda sourlands like in spots, overgrown, and very rough. i enjoyed myself for a trail that was a couple minutes down the road.

Dave,

When I first started riding I rode over there quite a bit. Haven't been there in a while but I might check it out.

Thanks for the reminder.

I was not aware each town maintains its own beach. I thought they were more like Sandy Hook type of deals.
Yeah, some are owned by towns, some by townships, some by the county, etc. I think some towns like to own their own beach so they can charge for beach passes during the summer.
In any case, headed over to hit up the Lawrence Hopewell Trail and was going to do some double back stuff but decided to loop around instead. I already know where this goes but made a point to follow the signs and definitely found some major gaps in the signage where other areas are very over signed.
Thanks for posting that link! I remember taking the trail from the D&R Canal Towpath two or three years ago, but I lost it somewhere and couldn't figure out where it continued. I was following the signs and they just seemed to stop at one point, with no obvious way to go. I'll have to try it again sometime.

A late afternoon meeting was canceled, which gave me the chance to try and ride some of the places I had planned to hit over the weekend. Whew, I'm tired. I think it's time for bed soon. I don't know how many more days I can keep this up 🙂

+1 ride
+1 Henry Hudson Trail
+1 Hartshorne Woods
+1 Huber Woods
+1 Sandy Hook
... dark... yeah, but already have the one
Total: 5

Looks like lots of people hit Hartshorne Woods earlier in the day when it was soft... lots of tire tracks 🙁 By the time I got there, it had firmed up enough and was already crusting over making it a bit slick in spots. Had to ride slowly and carefully.

So here is the good and the bad

the good - i rode instead of playing on the internet while my kid was at his percussion (drum) lesson. Been eyeing these powerline/jeep/fieldside trails for a bit now - finally decided to ride them -

The sun set well before 5:05 today, as these trails are in the shadow of "sand hill" - but as it is, got 50 minutes of post sunset riding in - which is all i got in, cause his lesson is 1 hour long.

1 Minneakoning trails
1 Dark
1 Ride

the bad - well, it wasn't "that dark" for the first 15 minutes - it wasn't that long, and other than the trails being moto/jeep type, and soft grass - there wasn't much going on.

i did end up running over a deer carcass, just the back legs, but definitely had a walking dead vibe to it. found an old bridge that crosses the creek, and the old tractor they fire up to cut in paths - probably for snowmobiling too.

Came across two deer bait stations - a 'wildlife' camera, and a bunch of dumped stuff. alot of it would be soft if it wasn't frozen...
Pat,

I need to know where you were riding there. I ride past there every day on the way to work so I could get some dirt miles there.

check the satellite imagery - there are power lines coming out on river rd, with a paved pull-off, they lead to the power lines that run across minneakoning - there is a pvt property sign along the sewer line clearing on the west side (or it is rain water drains - didn't look) - mostly quad/jeep type track. recommend wearing orange. it also came very close to the back of diamond nation at one point. can't really say it was any fun, other than an adventure....

I'm missing a bonus pt for riding sick on monday - and consequently being too sick to ride since. But will try to get out after work today

we too rode it late Wednesday (when it was frozen) and we saw lots of deep ruts. Ugh!!!!

Ok, you guys have inspired me to ride a lot this year. 4th ride of the week/ 4th day in a row. Rode Alaire, the ground was mostly frozen with many tire tracks. 4th park of the week.

Normal point total on the day for me today:
https://www.strava.com/activities/245022931/

2 total:
1 ride
1 park

17 for the week.

Met up with Kirt and rode some of Mooch proper today. He's had back issues this year and I'm at the end of a massive week. As of right now I have 11:34 in the saddle and 9908 feet of Strava elevation. So my legs were toast before the ride and he's out of form. We made it a solid tired-old-man ride today. We both sported the salt & pepper unshaven looks today.

I don't know Mooch so I will say we rode the trails with the rocks and some without rocks. Conditions were really good. No snow, almost no ice, and very very little frost heave. The park is not being ridden enough. more people need to use it. Regardless, it was a good ride on good trails.

After the ride we met Utah for lunch. Can I get a point for that? He has a beard but no gray yet. His kid is too young to have turned him gray.

Tomorrow I will do bunny hops in my driveway to hit the 5000' elevation bonus point.

Went back to where I left off from Tuesday ride and started at semi-local park #1.

Found it to be lot more ridable than I remember. Which could mean that I got better or I was just riding the easier side. However, there were still like 7-8 walls a-la Round Valley.

Connected it to semi-local park #2. Going in was some tough climbing and some hiking. Then I hit this (gotta pull up my pants):

Said f-it, will keep going. Go up around the bend and there is another gnar wall. Then another gnar wall. Finally reach top for great view of smoke factory:

Better view this side:

Decent was not too bad, then it just turned in a up and down fireroad. One section was solid ice.

Then hit semi-local park #3. This side had some good stuff + a few short hiking sections.

I sort of like doing this kind if exploration and bush whacking stuff more than going to ride the same old trails. Time and place for everything I guess.

Ride at jungle today. Warthog is pretty icy, boon has some death inducing patches of ice on the rock faces.

Threw a new cog on the SS yesterday and ran 32 X 20 at somo today. The first 20 minutes of this place is climbing, with the easier gearing its still too much work...but better then the 18 cog.

Some sections were ice flows(think orange trail down to gilbride at CR) others were major frost heaves and some sections were perfect. No mud, which is always bonus.

I'm thinking of leaving this gearing on, its a bit weak for Allaire but I want to give it a go for awhile. I want to see how this gearing will do in some parks up north.

1pt Ride
1Pt Park
1pt Consistency
3 Pt total

Remeber when Woody used a suspension fork. Also Ben designed Woody's shirt.
