BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

1 pt ride. The trails are frozen and rutted on some spots.

went out for another ride because of the snow. I dont know if this count as 2pts because I went to a wild life refuge park near my house

1 ride + 1 park = 2pts

Only 1 ride point per day. New park should be a +1.

CCC for a quick hour, heavy snow the whole ride. Have we changed precip point to just mean rain and on the road?

Snow doesn't get you any points on nor off-road, I'm told.

never understood why one can get a point in the rain but not while it's snowing.

If part of the purpose of this thing is to give points for a wide range of riding experiences (rain, dark, cold, variety of parks, road, etc) why not snow?

Met Goz, Mitch, Greg, Fodar and some other peeps at Allaire for a snowride. It was coming down pretty good, the trails had just enough snow on them to make things a bit slippery. Going over roots was tough, Tiger Woods in reverse was stoopid. I'll let Mitch post up the swelfie pic.

I was as wet as my rain ride the other day. Maybe because snow is just more fun.

Not even one flake of snow on the ground here today, but it looks like that's going to change this weekend. I had riding plans for both Saturday and Sunday, but depending on the severity of the storm, any dirt might be out for the whole weekend. Roads could be out as well if it's icy. Ugh.

1/20 - headed to the beach for an afternoon ride. Due to the lack of freezing temperatures, there wasn't any crusty sand to ride on. I timed my ride for low tide, so I'd maximize the amount of more dense and damp sand that I'd have to work with. It wasn't too bad - really slow, but only sunk in a few spots.

+1 ride
+1 new park (sand)
Total: 2

1/21 - I was struggling to think of where to go around here to fit in another "new park" point during a break from work. I remembered that there's a gravel path on top of the Pews Creek flood control berm in Port Monmouth. Of course, its real purpose is to give vehicles access to the gates and such. But, hey, it's a rideable trail/path/whatever. It's only 3/4 of a mile long, so I had to go back and forth from end to end a number of times... yeah, it was getting old toward the finish of the 45 minutes 🙂

Tonight I introduced Soundz to some local trails.
Was good to have company, motivation was in short supply...

Think i rode in two parks today...

2 parks
1 ride

1 totally good time with legs spent, and a nap afterwards!

we didn't hit anything really techy, but was happy that about staying on the bike for everything but the really steep uphills-

still can't let it go with the neck injury in my mind. Liong had this type of injury and it cleared in about a year - so glad he knew exactly what i was talking about. sounds like his was worse, so i'm hopeful....

Same local woods tonight, however we came across an entire trail along the river covered with impassable ice slabs as far as we could see. Had a few mile detour but I can use the extra time on the bike. Snow was coming down a little hard at times and it was tough to see with the headlights. Also, the frozen puddles are pretty sketchy. Had a slow OTB but managed to keep from getting wet.

I think most of welcome riding dirt in the snow. Speaking personally, I try to make it a point to go get a snow ride in when snowing, so for me it's even easier than going out in dry conditions.

I'm not sure what your drive to ride philosophy is or , but I've been driving 10-20min to get to most of my rides. Looking at Google maps, you could put in something "mega" like this:

Cheesequake
Homdel
Thompson
Tatum
Hartshorne
Huber
Sandy Hook
Sand
Road

I don't the area too well, but I think that's like 40-50 total driving time and there may be other small parks/paths I don't know about.

Do different beaches get counted as a park? If not, I think they should .. aren't they individually maintained by separate park commissions?

Jmanic set the hot pace tonight at a local trail which I have never ridden before. Btw, he did not share his beer 😉

One thing this year's contest is doing is making me venture out to local stuff I normally do not do or never have done. Maybe there is a reason why that is the case, but I have discovered some new ridable stuff and maybe some things that will be good to ride with my future wife.

I find finding new stuff, route, trails enjoyable even if they are not mountain bike specific. I may start going up to the Sterling Mtn area again to continue my map project.

So during this whole process, I figured out a ride from my house to Harriman that can be done on mostly dirt. Looking forward to attempting that at some point during or after the contest.

Ride = 1pt
Park = 1pt
Dark = 1pt

Total = 3pt

I really hate driving, so driving 10 minutes each way just to spend 45 minutes at a park seems like a waste of time that could be better spent on my bike riding from home, hence my search for places I can ride to within 15 minutes or so without needing to drive. The drudgery of driving cancels out the fun from the riding for me. (Plus, depending on workload, getting out for even an hour on weekdays can sometimes be difficult, so I look to maximize riding time while minimizing driving time.) This weekend, I was actually planning on trying to pick up a bunch of new park points (hitting a bunch of the parks you listed), but with the storm approaching, I don't know how much riding I'll be able to get it. So, I'm trying to find local places I can quickly hit during the week for some new park points before the storm arrives. I'm still trying to be optimistic that the storm is going to fizzle out, but it's not looking that way...

From what I remember Pat saying, no, only one sand point per week, with the exception being where the beach is actually a park. So, Sandy Hook counts as a separate park (not sand), but a local beach counts as the one sand point for the week. If they were counted separately, it might be difficult to get 45 minutes in. With the way towns are squashed together in some areas, a relatively short stretch of beach might actually pass through a few different towns' jurisdictions.

That is on par with different types of roads get different points. Let's not make this contest more of a mockery than it already is. I

I was not aware each town maintains its own beach. I thought they were more like Sandy Hook type of deals. Great job on the mockery comment.

From what I can tell, people who are riding the most are also on the contest's leaderboard.

Side note: accidently grabbed my half dead battery on my way out the door yesterday morning, died after ~1:15...so the last 30-40 min I rode on total darkness. In Hepner park where the single track isnt exact well ridden...this was pretty interesting. Thankfully the cloud cover provided some light reflection and I could kinda make out the depression of the trail. Did take a few branches to the face though.
