Welcome to the 2015 version of the highly controversial

Winter Base Race

Link to Enter Your Ride. BIYF 2015 Ride Entry Form
- the entry form will calculate your points after being submitted, but will have a place for your estimate, so we can clear any "issues"

A quick summary and entertaining ride report should be placed in this thread - not required....but something
to do while drinking your post ride hot (latte, chocolate, toddy)

Who's Winning?

Objective:
- Shock and awe others with your riding.

Here's the rules:

Duration:
Starts 1/1/2015
Ends 3/21/2015

Format:
A weekly 'race' ending on Sunday nights, leading to a series crown.
1st week scoring ends midnight 1/11, rides entered by noon on mondays
Final week - TBD - Series winner crowned, Tournament of Champions, Schmoe Tournament.

Scoring:

1. Ride - Sum of the day's moving time of 45 minutes or more shall be considered riding your bike. 1 Point

2. Epic Ride - A ride which covers 100 miles, or spends 5 hours on dirt, or climbs 5000'. Notice the or, if the ride meets 1 or more of these conditions score 1 Bonus Point. There is no limit on how many of these can be submitted in a week. GPS or Cycling computer required for 1st two, Elevation required GPS - it can be marked private, but hell - you just did something epic, show it off. Road can not be counted as a park (new ride) in an epic dirt - up to 60 minutes can be used towards saddle time.

3. Hard Ride - A ride where the temperature is below 15F, or is raining, or is dark (before or after sunset) for at least 45 minutes of the ride. If the ride meets one or more of these conditions score 1 bonus point. 1 of each kind of of these rides can be submitted in a week, but only one per ride. Click all that apply, and the system will maximize your score.

4. New Ride - Each week, for each park, trail system (named or unnamed), dirt road, paved road, sand, where a ride occurred, an additional point will be scored. See definition of ride. We are going to be very generous here - so be creative, but be reasonable. You might get a point, but suffer the fate of Tantalus.

5. Event Bonus - Participate in a sanctioned race or bicycle oriented event gains a bonus point. You know, scorers, race numbers. DNF counts - does not have to be 45 minutes of moving time to get the bonus point, but will not count as a (new) ride. Also includes charity rides, and demonstrations of support for a cause.

6. Consistency Bonus - Ride 4 days in a week for 1 bonus point

Most points in the week wins that week's race.
Ties all get the same number of points
The next 'spot' after ties, is just one place back
The rider with the lowest sum of finishing places wins the series - not riding in a week ties for last place + 1.

Inquiries, Protests, etc.

1. State your case, and it will be submitted to the scoring committee.

Safety & Etiquette

You know the drill.
Do not damage the trails by riding in the mud.
Do not ride road in freezing precip - you may be able to do it, but it isn't going to count here.
Make yourself and your bike visible.
Respect others

Have fun, go out and meet some people!

Edit history:
1/2/2015 - added cycling computer to epic ride, clarification for Hard Ride bonus
1/4/2015 - added calendar
1/7/2015 - added parks point explanation link
1/8/2015 - added Entry form and leader board link
1/8/2015 - Weather at BIYF Corporate office
1/12/2015 - note about maximizing hardness points.

1/20/2015 - Redefine race as event

First.
Is ride reporting based on the honor system or a garmin/gps device?

I'm thinking honor system for rides/parks/conditions
gps required for epic rides, and multi-park days.

also, thinking that i'll add a "private" checkbox for gps link, which won't get published with the results -

PWC has been engaged for audits and controls.

Where do paved trails fit in for the "epic ride" bonus? They're not quite dirt, but not quite road either. If easy dirt like the D & R Canal Towpath counts as dirt, why wouldn't the (paved) Henry Hudson Trail count as well? Of course, if we get snow this year, riding an uncleared paved trail is more similar to dirt than it is to riding a cleared road. [There's also no provision for a combined ride, for example, if I spend 3 hours riding the road to spend 4 hours on dirt trails. But, that's getting complicated.]

For the "new ride" point... Do multiple road rides in the same week, but on different routes, count separately, as long as 45 minutes of each route is "new" for that week?

The way I read it:
Monday road - 1
Tuesday Six mile - 1
Wed CR - 1
Thurs different roads - 0 cause monday
Fri D&R - 1

Maybe we need to move this to the discussion thread

i hear ya about the epicness issue - no solution. maybe group source a bonus point?

1 point for paved road per week
1 point for dirt road per week

even if they are different roads.

i'm going to put the paved trail into the 'trail system' category - it is more of an adventure - and that is encouraged.

What does "dirt road" mean? An unpaved road like sections of dutchtown-zion, montgomery, etc? I'd assume one would have to spend at least 45 minutes one day on such roads, right?

1.5+hrs road ride outa the house
is it +1 pt for every 45minutes?
if yes then 2 pts

1 point for the ride (45+ minutes)
1 point for the road (one road point per week)

so 2pts.

nice job.
