BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Fat bike this morning because of the huge amount of snow but roads conditions were probably better than yesterday's ride. In any case, headed over to hit up the Lawrence Hopewell Trail and was going to do some double back stuff but decided to loop around instead. I already know where this goes but made a point to follow the signs and definitely found some major gaps in the signage where other areas are very over signed. Hit the the Johnson Trolley Line connector, which is an old trolley line that connected north Trenton with the rural community of princeton. I helkped some of our planner at my work research this and at some point I have found/ridden the ROW that are still there, many of which are now improved MUTs but there are large portions that are on private land or are now a house or golf course.

In any case, Lap 1 is the LHT, 2 is where I broke off and 3 is where I picked it back up. I had more time than I thought so I looped back and picked it up again and came back the way I started.

4 points:
1 ride
1 Lewis Morris
1 Patriots Path
1 Randolph Trails

+1 for consistency bonus

15 on the week

So I'm just a point back of Weber's 4/day mandate. I don't see how I'll get 13 in the next 3 days but I guess you never know. I still have 4-5 local parks, plus the canal. I don't think Chimney Rock is going to like people riding it right now. So I don't think I can loop that in. For sure a Canal-Six Mile loop is asking for mudification.

Planned out a 4 pointer today with a 5th point for consistency. The base was Lewis Morris and PP double, with an extended ride up to the Randolph trails that Utah suggested. I had done the connection before and after discussion it and looking at the map, it seemed easy enough.

I went right to the farthest part, the Randolph stuff via PP, which was a sheet of ice in spots. Hit the deck about 7 minutes in but other than that managed to avoid the slippery slopes of ice world. Found the trails easy enough and just road around until I got my 45 minutes in, almost the the second. Jumped back on PP to LewMo.

LewMo was a drag. I'm tired, and the conditions are not ideal. It's not really muddy, more ice sheets turning into crunch. Some messy stuff on the road, and some solid ice on the road. Trails were more or less fine, a few wet spots. It's Lewis Morris, you get that pretty much any day.

Have to say I was tired today. And forgetting anything to eat made that last park hard to ride out.

So now almost 10 hours on the week. Looking forward to sleeping in this weekend.

^looks like my ball sack.

I got out before sunset today as well. Felt so good to be in the sun for a road ride in Howelltucky. Not much wind and the roads were dry, which is rare in the winter.

Evan took his camera back to school with him and my camera is broke. I'll post up something from early fall.

Epic riding without points, Kingdom Trails.

So here is the good and the bad

the good - i rode instead of playing on the internet while my kid was at his percussion (drum) lesson. Been eyeing these powerline/jeep/fieldside trails for a bit now - finally decided to ride them -

The sun set well before 5:05 today, as these trails are in the shadow of "sand hill" - but as it is, got 50 minutes of post sunset riding in - which is all i got in, cause his lesson is 1 hour long.

the bad - well, it wasn't "that dark" for the first 15 minutes - it wasn't that long, and other than the trails being moto/jeep type, and soft grass - there wasn't much going on.

i did end up running over a deer carcass, just the back legs, but definitely had a walking dead vibe to it. found an old bridge that crosses the creek, and the old tractor they fire up to cut in paths - probably for snowmobiling too.

Came across two deer bait stations - a 'wildlife' camera, and a bunch of dumped stuff. alot of it would be soft if it wasn't frozen...

Kelly Drive, Belmont, Forbidden Drive Gravel to Valley Green Inn Road Climbs and back with road riding to connect it all. +4, and a consistency +1 for 4th day. Could have squeaked a night point but already took one this week.

I wanted to get more climbing in but the fire roads in wiss and Belmont were complete shit. Mostly frozen but super wet. The singletrack in Belmont was still completely frozen with a thin layer of wet snow on the top which made me happy. I didn't expect to get any actual trails in.

This was my first time doing the road climbs there and plan to make it a regular rain/mud day occurrence. It should be easy to put together 5k feet with a proper route, the right bike and some repeats. Once again I had my SS on a day that I really wished for gears.

Minneakoning trails

when i had to shack back up with my parents many many years ago i found some trails that you should check next lesson. head to deer path park/henry buell trail.

last time i was there (it feels like ancient history now - looks like i rated it on mtbr in 2003) it was a weird out and back. a mix of horse trails, kinda sourlands like in spots, overgrown, and very rough. i enjoyed myself for a trail that was a couple minutes down the road.

He did, yes. He has occasionally succumbed to "dont feel like riding this month" syndrome. 😀

Minimum pieces of flair

1-pt ride on the Citibikes today in 3 parts.
Had hoped to get in enough before work to skip the lunch ride,
but Citibike gods were not smiling on me this morning.
3 stations and eleventy billion codes to get a frickin' bike.
Guess I spoke too soon about how convenient they are.
I almost kicked something.
Then I lost my hat somewhere on the ride home.
Thursdays suck.

think i can put together some bits and pieces to make it glad all over!

i know where that trail crosses stanton road - always wanted to try it out - they have been expanding it across 31 also. maybe bomb out of RV at the south damn, and take a look (for a 3 parker, don't tell norm)

Oh snap. That's in my wheelhouse.

Actually that reminds me of the Deer Path trails south of RV. Maurice always said you could link in with them and piece stuff together. I tried once but it was crapola.
