Only in the first race was the fat class winner on the lead lap. Races #2 and #3 the fat winner was -1. Last race the fat class winner was lapped twice.

To be fair... I think I would have been considerably faster in that first race if I had Jims fat bike. But the scalpel worked good enough.

I am a long time Avid user and bumped up to the guides earlier this year. Stop the hating for past failures and come ride a good brake for once.

What? I don't own Avids!

And you sir are someone who digs their heels in when you believe in something so you should understand when I do it.

Been riding my fatbike with a set of 27.5+ wheels and tires (Fat B Nimbles on 50mm rims) all summer. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be - lighter and faster than fat wheels, but less cushy. The only "surprise" is that the traction is almost as good as with 4" fatties. I'm really enjoying mine on the central NJ trails (Hartshorne, Allaire, Chimney, etc.), but on the rocks up north I prefer the fatter tires for some cush. It's just a wheel size, people. We have choices like never before. I can't understand why anyone would think that sucks.

I believe I met you at Hartshorne the other day, I was on the turner

I've been on the Fuse for about a month now. It feels like a FS at places like CR, and shreds at 6 MR and Hartshorne. I don't race, and you're probably faster than me, but I just like to be on a bike.

I prefer 29 on hard tail/rigid, and 27.5 on a short travel FS.
I personally think 29 + FS is too much. I think 27.5 is gonna stick around for a while.

Who knew from the title that this thread would be one of the classics of mtbnj forum lore?

“When nobody is looking, however, we will all recite the Fat Bike Haters Oath to prove our commitment to the cause.”

Where can I get a copy of the oath?

“I'm clearly outnumbered by the fat haters here. Carry on. But real talk, I'll hang with anyone here on any bike they choose at any venue except for maybe Utah. Utah the person, not the place.”

Now that Utah was “accidently” pushed off a bridge, this point is temporarily moot.

“I mean we all stepped up to raise $5000 for you to go to Alaska. Nobody hates you nor your bike(s).”

WTF! He’s not going to die? I been duped. Please send a refund to Phathaters.com.

My empirical testing reveals that a bluto fattie is just about as fast everywhere except long fire road type climbs. That last appears to be popular wisdom, as well, and common in a mtb race. It seems like the fattie is faster down rocky trails. And, as 20 others in this thread alone have said, mud, snow, landmines, and junkyard dogs all are conditions where fat is better.

Disclaimer: I am old (#over60raceclassrequired), fat and slow so my personal observations are clearly not applicable to you.

All that being quoted and said, I would try a 27.5+. What the hell?

So I finally got a 27.5+ of my own. The 2016 bad habit. This 120mm travel bike rides like it has more travel than it does. Slack head tube and long offset for makes this thing stick like glue going dh. Traction is outstanding and it rolls faster than I thought it could. The rear shock blows just like every other RS rear shock I have ridden. Fox has them beat. I will certainly get a fox shock for this shortly.

Fit is spot on for me. These bikes come with short stems as they should. I still ran a longer stem as I like a longer cockpit.

Tires are like glue. I have a set of Nobby Nics in 27.5x 3" to try as well. I am also going to build up a 29er wheels set as they will also fit on here.

As a long time 29er fanboy, this bike feels like home. It rolls over everything with ease. The weight here is the downfall. This is the heaviest bike I own outside my DH bike. It rides light and that is always a plus, but a carbon version of this will be welcome.

This bike makes you a better rider. It totally forgives sloppy technique and it begs to be jumped. It is wheelie machine and makes you want to make motorcycle noises. This is a confidence builder for sure.

The Sram 1x11 is solid but I still prefer the feel of a Shimano shifter.

Wtb rims and tires work as a team. There is certainly debate over what is the ideal rim width to run with a 3.0" tire. I feel like these may be a hair wide and they are certainly heavier than I am used to in carbon rims.

My prediction is that many bikes will come setup such that they can run either 29er or 27.5+. This make for two different experiences with the same bike.

That's beautiful! Welcome to the b-plus family!

JDog- mind if I see if the rear wheel of that machine fits into my Instigator? I want to build a nice set of wheels and need to determine if 27.5+ is possible. At Dirt Fest the Surly guys said yes but would love to see it to believe it. If not I could go with 26+ as it was intended or run wider 27.5 tires (like 2.4's etc...)

Sure. I also have a slightly narrower rim with a 2.8 tire you can try.

I just got the Scott Scale Plus Hardtail with 27.5+ x 2.8 Nobby Nic's. It handles like my Eriksen but just motors throughly rocks, soft conditions and on the downhills has a nice cushy ride. It weighs (med) ~26lbs tubeless. It's a little more work on the climbs compared to my Eriksen. The other thing that is interesting is the fork is a Fox 32 120 travel like on my other bike but is much stiffer, I attribute it to the boost 110.
