Serviceguy's angst...or how I cope with life by cobbling bikes (not a thread about pizza).

I guess the light blue El Mariachi now belongs to this thread, so here it goes.

I recently acquired a 2015 Salsa El Mariachi Light Blue frameset size large, it came with the original fork (RockShox Recon TK Gold QR) but not having any 29" wheelset using QR and quite honestly having gone past that standard I decide to spend on a NOS 2015 Fox 32 Float 110mm travel.

It's going to by a budget build so I decided to recycle a basically new XT crankset I had in my parts bin and purchase a chainring to go with it.

Brakes are from the XT 10 Speed groupset, shifter, derailleur and cassette from the XT 11 Speed groupset and along with the PNW dropper post are from the SS El Mariachi (she received a 'temporary' lower lever replacement for the brakes and she's fully functional again).

Wheels are going to be either the 27.5+ I had on the SS for a while or the 29" I bought from @Magic and that after re-taping and some cleaning were going strong on the then-geared-SS, even though the wheels will probably be replaced down the line due to a bling compatibility issue (red hubs and spokes on a blue frame...)

The rest is stuff from my private Salsa warehouse (carbon handlebars, stem etc.).

I updated the headset because the stock CaneCreek Ten sucks, went with a tall Forthy.

Stay tuned for pictures soon.

So today was able to ride the new to me light el mariachi on something else than fire roads. Tried and session a few features in Ringwood-Ramapo and Warm Puppy (thankfully nobody took pictures or filmed me, I felt rather precarious while doing it) but the old lady seems to handle everything I threw at it ( granted it’s not much). Loving the 2.6” Rekons

Sweet ride!!! you need to bring that down south for part 2 of our ride.

Not sure how or why but I'm up to a third El Mariachi frame. What!?!?!? 2015 Orange El Mariachi 2, original drive train, crappy brakes, stem and seatpost. Frame is kind of beat up, not too bad overall but the chainstays have seen tons of chain slap...I tried to match the orange as good I could with touch up paint, but it didn't really work. I'm going to do a custom job, eventually, but for now I'll leave as it is and build it as a gravel/adventure bike. Don't worry @jimvreeland , I'm not going after your records...just drop bars curious.

I've got most parts and some more arriving next week, I've literally used suppliers from all over the world (one GX lever from Japan, derailleur from Europe), the bike is going to be the usual mmix of new and used parts:

-2015 Salsa EM2 orange frame, kind of beat up...
-Salsa Woodchipper 46cm Alloy drop bars
- Salsa Guide Alloy seatpost
-GRX 600 levers (1x11 speed)
-GRX RD-RX812 1x11 rear derailleur
-XT BR-M785 calipers

I'm going to use my magic (because I bought them from @Magic ) wheel set for now, probably build a set of Hope hubs eventually.

If you want to know why...because I've been thrown a few curveballs lately and this is the only way I know to cope with it. Doesn't have to make sense to anybody else as long as it does to me. I guess.

Pictures to follow.

I'm out for now.

Angles are not setup yet (saddle, drop bar sets.) and the woodchipper bars looks weird from this angle but this is where I’ve got so far as I’m missing the front post adapter for the calipers, the derailleur and some small parts. Like it so far but it looks huge, more of a mountain bike with drop bars than a gravel bike…

The frame size will usually go down by 2 in order to match a Gravel Fit with a mountain bike. Flat bars to reach is exactly the same as the stem but with drops the reach is 7-8 inches farther out.

By 2 you mean cm, inch of sizes? I need install the cranks and see how it feels. Maybe I should install the stem backward? LOL…I could not find anything shorter than 70mm.

What do you need? I might have.
Post to post front 180 caliper adapter. The rest is in the mail (derailleur, chain) or I already have it.

Quick update on project El Monsterac-ish (a complete rip off the name of project El Mosterachi that strongly inspired my latest endeavor)

Brakes are bled and operational, bars are wrapped (probably not the best job ever but will have to do). Ineed to find some cool plugs, the ones that came with the Bontrager tape are meh, I'm thinking to buy a set of bar end plugs and coordinated headset plug from KustomCaps, this design is strongly on my radar...

I do not have a delivery time for the rear derailleur (Shimano GRX RD-RX812 compatible with the 41-11 XT cassette that will go on this one) so I may go SS for the time being...

)

Was gonna post the Tanglewood Stem, but Soundz beat me to it...

I have a 35mm stem to use but I think I’ll stick with the 70mm instead, it feels right when seating on the bike. Off course it may change after riding it for an extended period of time (relatively speaking that is). Those contraptions look like they belong on a clown bicycle (and I am not the highest fan of clowns).
