Need help with tubeless / Tubeless 101

Did anyone use IRD fire29er xcpro tire for tubeless setup? I'm wondering if sidewalls are tick enough.

...never mind, I see Matty had some success with IRD tires. I like the method with gorilla tape.

home-brew

I'm thinking about this mix

1 part latex
1 part slime
1 part antifreeze
2 part water
1/2 part glitter

Did anyone try this?

Great success with many varieties of non-UST tires. However, only on a UST rim. I wouldn't recommend non-UST rims for tubeless, I know people that had issues. You will need a compressor. It does not matter whether you use stans or caffee. In fact, the recommended procedure is to seal the bead before adding sealant. That way you're not wasting it. Usually, the trick that works is to get the bead soaked with soapy water + compressor, then add sealant. That should handle most anything. Some trial and error.

If you use both UST tires and UST rims, most of the time you can get away with a floor pump. Your mileage may vary.

Every bike I own is tubeless 😀

I ran a set of Stan's converted Sun rhyno lites with non UST Kenda Nevegals. They were perfect for a year then all of a sudden the rear tire would not hold any air. Once I switched to a UST Specailized roll X tire they actually sealed with out any soap and just a floor pump plus, they retain air better than a tube type tire.

Are you serious about this mix, or just goofing around? :hmmm:

Have you actually tried it?

There are endless threads out on MTB sites on homebrews so yes Robert is serious, That one happens to be a popular mix for the do it yourselfers....

Jeez!! That's amazing!! Antifreeze of all things.

And to think I started MTBing in 1989 on a Trek fully rigid, LUGGED frame! Which I still have by the way.....all original. 😎 ( 🙁 But it's gotta go :cry🙂

I never in a million years would have anticipated the possibility of putting antifreeze in my tires back then.

I start to feel ancient 😱 when I think of all the technological changes I've seen take place, not just with MTBs, but bikes in general. It's amazing what has transpired in such a short span of time considering how long bicycles have been around.

I want to thank Woody and Spence for the tip of keeping the tire off the ground when trying to mount a non tubeless tire with a hand pump. Seems obvious to me now...😱😱

I was able to mount my Maxxis Ignitors. Thanks guys!

...well, there is hope. I can buy portable air tank🙂...and this better work:getsome:

If you lived near by I would let you set up at my house. Friendly with any contractors? Like me mine is used for work and play...

I don't know any contractors and you are too far a way🙂 I'll buy portable air tank, this is the only sensible option😉

How is tubeless ever a winner if you still have to add the liquid weight and carry a tube in addition to air cartridges and in addition weight down the wallet with the need for a compressor?

You do not need an air compressor to set up tubeless tires. Does it make life easier, yes. Its nice to have a quick way to pump air into the tires so they can seat themselves. IT IS NOT NECESSARY. Im not sure what probs he is having😕:hmmm: but it could be more user error than anything.

Tubeless is unquestionably the way to go. There are plenty of ways to get the job done and they do not require a lot of money or a new set of wheels. You certainly do not need an air compressor!

Maybe you can tell us what troubles you are having so we can help.😀

Tire is lose when mounted. I need to pump big volume of air very quickly to pop the bead and seal it. With floor pump this is impossible. I could also try another layer of gorilla tape...

I thought I needed a compressor too but I didn't.
As I said before, just elevate the tire so its not sitting on the ground. Use some soapy water and pump..... what tire and rims are you using?

Why not get a compressor? They are not too expensive.

If you are trying to mount non-UST tires, you for sure have to have one.

If you are mounting UST tires on UST rims, you should be able to do it with a floor pump, and soapy water.

I thought so too, but I mounted both a non-UST Nevegal 29er and a non-UST Geax Saguro 29er recently with just a floor pump. I even own a compressor but I figured I would try the floor pump first just for shits and giggles. Maybe it depends on the floor pump? I have a Topeak Joe Blow that moves a decent amount of air volume, and I just pump like a madman for 20-30 seconds until the tire seals.
