Music

Really can't enough of this album, Hozier is such an incredible talent. He is playing at the Hammerstein on 3/22. Stubhub has 240 tickets and they have not been moving, I'm waiting for the price to drop and hopefully score some tics.

I woke up yesterday at 11:00am in somewhat of a stupor, not really hungover from a party the night before but rather feeling kinda foggy. The first thing I did was check the computer for Hozier tickets. I have been checking Stubhub regularly to try and score tickets. My magic number was $8o, if I saw them drop to that price I would pull the plug and go. So I log on and bang, I see 2 tickets for my magic number...score.

I have really been into this album he put out last September, its filled with great material. A lot of bands or vocalists come out with one or two good songs on an ablum, Hozier's album is all killer, no filler. Without getting to verbose about his music, I'll just say that he combines elements of his Irish folk heritage with soulful blues artists artists such as Skip James, a legendary delta bluesman. The result is unique and standing at over 6' the man commands the stage when he walks on it. His guitar work is spectacular, he can pluck a guitar for a beautiful folk sound or turn up his amp and play slide up and down the neck with the best of them. The real standout of this perfomer is his voice. Big and powerful with 4 female background singers to add high pitch harmony that sounds like a sunday church revival. If you haven't figured out by now, I was blown away by his show last night. There were less then 2000 people in attendence but the place was on fire with energy. The Hammerstein was the perfect place to see Hozier, he took everyone to church and the crowd responded with a solid amen.

Oh yeah, I should mention that George Ezra opened the show. He is a young shiny up and comer. I got to hear him play Budapest, so that was an added bonus on the night.

Courtney Barnett is doing some pretty cool stuff, has a fun feel with goofy rambling lyrics.
Yeah, she has a way of taking the mundane and making it interesting. While she does not have a huge stage presence this makes her more accessible and someone you can relate to.

Apologies for poaching here for a gig post. I've seen some MTBNJers at a show or 2 so wanted to let some riding friends know. My Dead show at SOPAC in S. Orange this Friday 4/10 and next day, Saturday 4/11 at Tarrytown Music Hall NY. Playing a short set of my jazz stuff Sunday 4/12 at Brookdale guitar show in Lincroft but doing a full band show Friday 4/17 at the Woods Theater at Monmouth U in W. Long Branch NJ. Sounds like this:

^Yes, I was here last night. I think we should rename this thread Iggy Kirshner Concert Review.

If your a Decemberist's fan or Colin Meloy fan then you will enjoy this post, if you are neither then you should give a listen.

This was my first time seeing this band, after hearing great things about their live performances I was not disappointed. I will be honest and say the first half of the show was a bit flat. The Beacon is a comfortable place to see live music but perhaps its a bit too comfortable. People were content to relax in the cushy seats and watch Colin Meloy perform his ballads...until about midway through when he turned up his amp and brought the audience to their feet. This was what I was waiting for.

The onstage theatrical ability of Meloy was his strong point, his ability to tell a story and have the crowd participte in it with enthusiasm is remarkable. The setl list was all over the place, and the crowd was apart of the journey.

Also I did the Iggy upgrade at the show. No matter what venue I go too(sporting or musical) I always try to sneak down to the better seats. For this show Mary and I managed to get down to the 5th row of a sold out show. After the show I went up to the roadies breaking down the stage and asked for a setlist taped to the floor...score.

Saw them a few years back at the Philly Folk Fest.
Really enjoyed the music and theatrics. They bring it live.

Has Danny Schmidt made your radar?
He pops up on a pandora station I rock at work.
I'm thinking you might enjoy.
Little Grey Sheep seems like a solid album.

I'll have to check him out.
Recently I've been digging new stuff from Jose Gonzalez(Leaf Off) and Boz Skaggs teaming up with Bonnie Raitt(Hell to Pay).
