Conditions?

some people like to get on here and just try and direct people on when they can or cant ride.

Honestly, when it's raining, i rarely see people out there. I wouldnt be surprised if the ones that cry about it most are also the ones who do the most damage.

If people do attempt to salvage the trails or "direct" others not to ride in crappy weather what does it matter to you... After all when your out riding in the rain you rarely see people anyway... I believe if you want to get your fix on in the rain go for it... Just be respectful on this board and don't bury yourself... Saying people "cry about it" is really off color and you should see that with out someone having to point it out to you... OK here is where I choose to ignore you on this topic moving forward😀

Maybe it is to stir up the bees nest. Or maybe i'm just thinking people are not practicing what they love to preach.

I personally do not ride when conditions get to bad but if I'm out and it starts raining I'm going to continue the ride. i guess it's just being out in the elements and dealing with the adverse conditions.

That being said, i think sometimes we get to caught up in "conditions" and some people like to get on here and just try and direct people on when they can or cant ride.

No way to really regulate it here

I really like this guy for some reason.

This is fair enough.

If I'm out, it's got to start pissing down for me to throw in the towel. Having said that, if the weather calls for pissing down, I probably won't go out, or I'll go somewhere less prone to being beat up, or maybe I'll go earlier.

Personally it's as simple as me being sick of cleaning up my beat up bikes time after time, race after race. If there's any chance I'm going to get caught in it, I'll pass. It's just not that fun to me. The chance of breaking myself or my bike is much higher when it's sloppy. Sure, it can be fun. And if I'm in Rome and it starts raining in Rome, well F it, I'm hanging with the Romans.

But if I'm looking to go out, and I know a place is muddy, I'll go elsewhere. This is why I rarely end up riding Six Mile and Chimney Rock, because the days I can ride and the good conditions almost never line up. I tried to go this past Monday. I asked a few people who said that after the late day storms it would suck. So I passed and hit the road instead.

Agreed, some people like to tell others what to do. And others here take a bit of a "prick first" attitude. All I can do is say that they don't speak for me, nor this site, and I apologize to the people who feel browbeaten by them.

I have not done any hours of trail maintenance. As i'm getting more into it, it is something i would like to get involved in for sure.

Funny, i get confronted by hikers for wandering off trails on a bike and now confronted by bikers for not doing trail maintenance. It really is getting pretty uptight out there

Before this thread goes into a complete downward spiral, I would just like to reply to your comments. The reason that so many of us are passionate about how our "User Community" behaves is because the actions of a few can have a direct impact on our access. Those of us who actually work on the trails may be overly protective at times, but we are also the ones that hear from park officials as well. The hikers you mentioned would be the first to call the parks and complain, and if they get a bunch of calls they decide to do something about it...simple.

FWIW this particular instance didn't really start as one person jumping into prick mode. It was each new reply adding just a little more "tone" to the one before it. I think the real frustration is that 9 times out of 10 when this issue comes up, regardless of what trail is in question, the "offender" immediately throws a big FU (maybe I'm paraphrasing a bit) out to whomever is offering the advice to stay away or give the trails a few more days.

This is why I'd suggest the wiki page for future reference. It needs a bit of love, but I'm reasonably sure we can make it something useful over time.

I get the feeling this guy is f'ing with us. come on, he cant be serious!

it seems clear you just dont get it.

if we all ride like it's a Mountain Dew commercial, they will restrict trails from mtb use.

again, your choice.

but I will not be happy if my favorite trail gets closed off cause some selfish a-hole on a bike ran down some old lady or because bikers were "wandering off trails" - the hikers should be yelling at you!

I'll chip away at it a bit over time. It would be cool to make it an overall "don't be a prick" page with rules of the trails etc.

Very true.

I've been in meetings with Six Mile Run park staff about angry farmers due to people riding their bikes through their fields. I've been to meetings about illegal trails being build near the farmers property, etc. The actions of ONE, let alone some, can cause trouble for us all as a user group.

Regarding six mile and being stuck out in the rain..... :

When the Six Mile Run trails are dusty dry, and it starts to rain, there is a window of time where riding will not damage the trails. They will get slippery as f*ck as the top layer of clay gets wet, with the underlying trail staying firm. It's once the water has had time to sit and penetrate the clay, that damage can be done. Sometimes, these quick hard thunderstorm downpours we get can run off quickly, and very little water gets absorbed into the trails. When this happens, riding will cause very little to no damage.

Winter and fall are the times of year that damage is most likely to occur, or during long periods of wet weather in the summer. If your caught out in the rain during dry conditions, you arent hurting anything at Six Mile Run.

Riding off trail is another no no. You wont only hear it from the hikers on this one either.

Its easy to complain about people being overly sensitive and preachy on this topic, especially if you don't have a dog in the fight.

I'll challenge you to this.... Log 10 hours of trail maintenance with JORBA at any park(s) in NJ, then tell us how you feel about riding in poor conditions.

My message is in no way intended to be hostile. Just putting it out there.

That is an awesome statement and so very true. I just started helping out with TM and I will say after we were finished for the night I felt like I did something that matters, and it felt really good to help rebuild what I enjoy so very much.

Yep, i agree with everything you said. Despise the damage it does to the bikes.

Also, cannot stand the muddy trails. a puddle here and there is no big deal, just fly through the center of it.

It's really good to see your comment about telling others what to do because i think that more to the point of what I'm saying

Lads/Gents, I am not a regular participant of this forum and have no TM log to show for. However, I treasure 6MR as much as everyone here...built my skills by riding here. Sadly, I have riden in poor conditions as well as abstained from riding at all, etc. etc. etc.

I would like to recommend that threads like this one be reserved exclusively for reporting trail conditions, and redirect comments and questions to the wiki, or another link or thread in which those that are less concerned or may take issue with this stuff can voice their opinions and get feedback from the community.

BTW, on Wednesday eve. RT27 side of trails up to concrete bridge were in fair shape. Only in certain tight corners, where trail wraps around trees, were there ruts forming.

There was some light rain in Somerset around 8 pm on Thursday.
