Commuting

you need one of these:

Damn Pearl I would have way to much fun with that mounted up front. I thought of wearing my downhill gear for the commute too 😀

Jp that is a cow catcher. Clapper told me about those things back in his day.

Matty, you took you're life in your hands when you went in front of that car so he wouldn't pull away. if the guy was drunk or had no insurance he may have taken off with you on his hood.

Vehicles are obviously the biggest thing to look out for, but peopel that enter active roads/pathways without looking are a real close second. My closest calls have been people who just jump out into the road or on the greenway, without looking at all. 90% of the time they don't even look one way, they just don't look at all. Its mind blowing.

I've resigned to just dialing it back most of the time. The more I commuted, the more comfortable I got, and that is a dangerous combo. I found myself thinking, "I shouldn't be going this fast" or "speeding up to catch that light probably wasn't the best idea". At the end of the day its about getting their safe- and looking at my ride times, the difference between rides where I was pushing it and rides where I'm more relaxed is negligable. Glad to hear you are ok- but be safe out there. The cars will win everytime.

This morning I took Riverside Drive all the way to 68th? and dropped down to the greenway from there. It is wayyy better in the morning, I will add this to the rotation. So I know of three good southbound routes (Greenway, Riverside Drive, and St. Nicolas to Central Park). I'm generally not a fan of riding the bike lanes up the avenues, but I may have to try. Anyone know of good northbound routes besides the greenway?

St Nicholas isn't too bad, but not as good as coming South since there is no park to your right. But since you are going slower slightly uphill, stopping at lights isn't as much of a rhythm buster.

Just a FYI, St. Nicholas through Harlem has been milled so take alt route in mean time. I usually take this way when there is a strong south wind like today.

I actually noticed this driving up to GWB on Sunday after dropping a friend off. At the time, I was like "I should post this on the commuting thread". Then I completely forgot 😀

At least it should be nice and smooth after they're done 😛

Haven't missed a day in about 4 weeks. Been a few wet ones but now I am gonna just break down and get some rain gear with the cooler weather. Friday worked late and gotta say I pedal much faster through Washington heights at 10:30p then normal hours 😀

Get fenders and a Showers Pass jacket - by far the best rain jacket. The Elite is pricey but well made and can be used as a winter jacket. Their pants are good too. REI carries them and if you're a member, you can use their 20% off coupon, which is good until Sunday.

First commute today

Finally committed to ride the bike into work today. The 8 mile ride into Picatinny was great (minus my first flat in a year). Road the mountain bike since my route home had some off road. The 14 mile ride home was great after a stressful day; nothing like some hills on Green Pond Rd to clear your thoughts. Looking forward to next time.

Today I decided to start off from RU's place. Gave him a last minute text to see if he was rolling in today, he passed. I haven't done this in some time glad I did. My time was tight but figured just need to hustle it. Well just as I started the Fr. Lee rd. hill I got swallowed by team fast break. Good bunch as they all passed I figured I try and hang on. 7 of them in all and as we went I worked myself back into the middle as 3 of them broke off the front never to be seen. It was now just me and one other and we hung till the 110st. Off Riverside dr. Where I split off to the park. Solid ride in and I needed that because change is good.

Did you go through the new bridge section at overpeck? Crossing over there is alot easier now on the way back.

Yeah that was a nice surprise. Should make it easier on the return trip too. Lets get a schedule to ride together again I miss you in a non homo way.

Team fast break is the Ridgewood Commuter Group. A really great group of guys and gals. I rode with them when I worked in the city. There is typically 2 rides into manhattan per day - 1 leaves from martens auto body at 5:30 the other 6:30. Five days a week and even when it's raining or below 20 degrees. I always left at 6:30 and there were up to 14 on a ride in. Typically would be in my freight elevator in midtown by 7:45. PS several of them ride on dirt too!!!!
