Clean Start

Pat,

Buy this:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/road_bikes/ultegra-roadbikes-lechampcfdi2-ltd.htm

Strip the Di2, put your old stuff on it and sell it for $1200. Everyone is happy.😀

Buy the MotoB as suggested above but get it in a frame size big enough for V. Put the DI2 on the Super Six and then put the 105 stuff from your Caad on the MotoB frame for V. You and V both get bikes!

No terrible - he's gotta be a 58? more legs than body.

Can't stop technology - I'm of the mindset that all bikes will go electronic - and it will end up being less expensive/more reliable than mechanical in the long run.

Already there. The mechanical Alfine 11 is plagued by super precise cable pull, using a system that was not originally designed with that in mind. Makes an 11 speed derailleur drivetrain look tolerant, by comparison. The Di2 model has absolutely none of the same issues with skipping/mis-engaging gears...perfect every time.

IMO, the only reasons to go mechanical currently are 1) cost, and 2) specific use (ie, touring away from outlets for extended periods). The performance is a no brainier, and the battery lasts at least a month, even with absurd levels of use.

think of all the things electronics can do -
  • control speed of shift
  • overshift, then return
  • dynamic trim based on current chainline, compensate for new/worn chain (maybe start to call for a new chain in the future, saving expensive items like eagle cassettes)
  • decide how many cogs based on holding the shifter (and how long it needs to be held)
  • shifter throw, and resistance independent of any cable or derailleur
  • different shifting paradigms based on programming/preference (bike, moto, f1, sram, shimano)
  • automatic transmission with a few sensors
  • button shifters (ie the end of aero bars)
i'm expecting more of a gesture interface for the mtb. maybe swipe the thumb over a sensor that can be mounted near/on the grip.
one less thing to break in a crash. direction of swipe would dictate shift - swipe and hold for multiples? it could use either hand, or both in combo.

i like it.

Most of these are answers to questions that weren't problems and people weren't asking. I think eventually it will go to electronic but the cost just isn't worth it given that mechanical is pretty damn good. I recently switched back to shimano on my road bikes and the shifting is basically perfect.

Either read or someone told me the battery is good for about 40 hrs? I don't push it and charge mine about every 20 hrs, usually 2 weeks, so dont know how long it really lasts.

Maybe they're shifting their front derailleur all the time? Drains the system way faster than the rear.

it really isn't worth the cost - but at some point, ya gotta think a single stepper motor programmed to do 7-12 speed shifting on a couple different cages will
be cheaper than dealing with all the different ratio shifters?? and when they go to 13 cogs, it is just some number that gets updated when the firmware is pushed.

etap looks really interesting, the more i read about it. but that is even more $$$....

One week post cleanse diet - it really wasn't a diet, let's call it a regime.

This mornings weight: 168.9
Post ride, pre-reading session. Drank a bunch of water, and i went to sleep last night at 170.5.
So after the 4th of july pig-out (literally, pulled pork and ribs all day) - i'm pretty happy with +1lb from last weeks low.

Timing was good coming off the regime into Halter's 31/31 contest. I have two MTB rides and 4 road rides through this morning. About 10.3 hours of saddle time.
This is already more than last July, and my pathetic april/may/june numbers totaled together might be beaten by Monday.

the legs feel decent. I'm going to need to start going up some hills soon.

I have Saturday morning open if a group ride opens up (hint)

Veloviewer claims we are currently a draw. I don't think @Robin has updated there in awhile.....

Robin 6 2 (33%) 2 (33%) 2 (33%)

that is 2 ahead, 2 behind, 2 draw. I'll check if i set any PRs on those climbs (which won't be soon)

Hey I only tried that once like 3 years (and 15 lbs) ago. Will be back in stinkin NJ Saturday, ready for some dirt and hills
WTF did you guys do, walk up the climb? I only had one attempt, 51 miles into a 107 solo day Wonder what I could do on a one hour pleasure cruise like you guys did. Crazy I am almost 3 min off the KOM.

Either way, you freaking crushed @rick81721

He has you on Iron Bridge (mainly because you didn't ride it) but I am still 2 min off the KOM, WTF. But never rode it not in a solo century+.
