Clean Start

I've had 950 calories today and just did an easy hour ride and I don't want to kill anybody yet. YET. Tomorrow I will do the same dietwise plus a little more mid ride food as I'll be doing a hard 2.5 hour workout. Tomorrow will be tough.

Yah. Hybrid construction, which you'll greatly appreciate when it starts to rain and you actually have brakes...
So out oft he need to want to get faster, I am a default roadie part time. I only ever s e dumping money into my road bike for aero wheels, never really considered these. I have stock Bontrager race lite wheels on my Domane. What's the big difference between the Fira ace and say a shallow Bontrager Aeolus aero wheel? Why would I buy one over the other. I'll assume weight?

Looks like moving to flatland I'm gonna need aero wheels for the road bike. Was reading reviews of Enve 7.8 - seems to be best combo of aero, braking and crosswind stability.

It's not always necessary to spend $2k-$4k on wheels if you want an aerodynamic benefit. There is other low hanging fruit like positioning, aero helmet, shoe covers, shaving your legs, and wearing tighter clothing especially.

If you're so inclined to hunt for drag reduction, the right aluminum rims will get you 90% there for 25% of the price. An A-Force AL33 rim is ever so close to a Zipp 303. Also a HED Belgium+, Flo 30, or Easton R90SL are right there too.

Don't overlook handbuilt rims, big savings and you can replace parts at nearly any bike shop in the country. Shimano, Enve, etc all use proprietary spokes so buy a few extra when you pick up the wheels.

First rule in bike spending: why build one set of wheels when you can have two at twice the price? Only, this one can be kept secret from wifey.

The 7.8s are huge. I rode them last year during TLD. 4.5s are the best all around Enves. Deep but still light. About the same dish as a Zipp404.

and the 11 day cleanse is a wrap at 10.75 days.

since it is a marketing driven plan, the instructions aren't always clear, and i found multiple versions
online - the one i chose to follow, had me drinking the cleanse every day, not just on cleanse days - so i ran out!
It also specified something that wasn't included in the kit. oh well.

results - 13 lbs lost, 1.5 inches around the gut. skin is much tighter in other spots.

I was mentally prepared to minimize being hungry - mentally being key. You know it is coming, so deal with it. probably drank a gallon of water a day. Seemed to help.

i broke the diet tonight with a little filet mignon, and a single slice of cheese. first dairy in two weeks.
I am now having a beer, and it is good.

on the shitting myself area - it never happened. Given all the abdominal distress i had to deal with in april and may,
this was surprisingly easy on the digestive system. no explosions, or running to the bathroom. i guess some of the others work that angle, but it didn't happen. My spouse was also happy wrt the fumes not emanating from my general direction. The art of the dutch oven has been lost.

----

EVO update.

I'm now in a quandary. The deal on the frame was excellent. I could buy DI2 groupo for $1400, live with my ksyrium elites, and
get the rest of the bits. so i'm probably in for $3000 all in - this is about the price for a standard frame supersix di2 - with the new model frame.
which comes with disc brake mounts (bosses?)

so i dunno. what think you?

ps - the hi-mod disc di2 has ugly paint scheme.

-----

i'mma gunna ride my bike soon.

Great job on the 11 day cleanse. Sounds like you held strong until the end. That must've been tough.

Not sure if the Di2 is worth the extra money over cable-actuated brakes and derailleur groups, or is just personal preference. Sounds like people sometimes forget to remember to charge Di2. I have enough keeping my lights charged, although I have to bring them in the house to rotate them on the charger. I would imagine that once you go Di2, you don't want to go back to conventional.

I'm confused, it's either rim or disc not both. Most of the disc models have fugly paint, the Ultegra mechanical one is the only one that looks good, but it's white.

If you can, wait a few days there are a lot of sales timed around TdF so you may find a better deal shortly. Also the new Ultegra was just released so the 6800 series stuff should be coming down in price shortly. Unfortunately it's always a waiting game and you just have to pull the trigger at some point.

One caveat with Cannondales is tight tire clearance due to the narrow BB30. I'm not sure if that frame can take wide rims plus 28c tires, it's a good idea to check first.

Could just buy a CAAD12 and pad that wallet or go Black Inc. and have no wallet. Also good job with the cleanse, that's a lot of weight!

Di2 is great. I say worth it. I has on CX bike.
Cleanse.... great job, now don't fuck it up. Try to stick to a modified shake day routine of some sort. Healthy breakfast, reasonable lunch and shake for dinner. Stay away from sugars as much as you can. Told you the pooping wouldn't be an issue.

Can't stop technology - I'm of the mindset that all bikes will go electronic - and it will end up being less expensive/more reliable than mechanical in the long run. Next step up would be wireless,
and app integration - . you'll get notifications to charge the battery, and from what i understand, di2 can last a whole season - at least my season. The ETAP system uses a paddle shifter paradigm -
(cue @jShort and @Carson) - pretty smart and only a few $$ more - it solved their own problem of mis-shifts with their double tap system.

Now i'm confused too. Looking at the frame tech, they advertise the disc brake integration in the rim brake models.....
Of course moving over to disc means a new wheelset. so does putting off that expense make sense? I'm sure I could sell some unused
stuff to make it up.

I don't mind the skinny tires.

The Black Inc is off the radar 🙁 - my bike should only be worth slightly more than my car. 🙂

Good info on the ultegra model change. ty.

Could also wait for the new synapse model, but why? 😉

4th of July - As usual, there is a gathering at my house. I'm on a very popular road route in Branchburg, centrally located between CR, SMP, and RV.
If in the area, swing by. PM me if you don't know where i live. Look for the Uncle Sam tube guy in the front yard.

I just want wireless charging and gps and headlight integration. Or if everything including my cellphone shared the same bus.
I hate charging shit but I'm no Luddite either.

Yeah, it's a pick one situation. Cannondale's marketing copy is as good as their pro team... Different axle spacing and standards plus frames, and forks especially, are constructed differently to deal with the stopping forces moving from the rim to near the hub.

My opinion is to wait another generation for road disc, we're in the 1st/2nd round of the big manufacturers putting out their flagship disc bikes and its still a bit muddy on finding common ground on disc brake mounts and axle configuration. Heck on the SuperX, the rear rim is offset to one side and any off the shelf wheelset has to be re-dished! In cross the benefits are too big to push off but on the road, I still think we're 3-5 years away from the big players settling on something.

On the disc specific wheel front, there isn't a critical mass of after market wheels at reasonable prices yet. There's a lot of stuff out there but if you have a thru-axle front and QR rear, your hub choices are a bit limited. There are options but usually the higher end stuff. Also many road disc wheels are just the rim brake model without the brake track milled. When more rims are designed as disc specific, you'll most likely see some lower weight/more aero stuff at more reasonable prices.

My humble opinion after riding an aluminum Fuji for 4 yrs then switching to an old model SuperSix Evo then riding an aluminum cross bike with wide road tires all spring is to find an aluminum frame and put more money into quality wheels, components, and especially tires. I'm lusting after a Fuji Roubaix Elite right now. Under 16 lbs, super stiff, mostly quality components, and $2,000 or less.

When they redid the synapse, I think they put it in a weird spot in the market since the EVO is pretty damn fantastic, and the current model can take28's without issue. The synapse is up to 32? 35?. I know big tires are the rage but if you are going to run 35's I think there are other bikes out there.

But they took the synapse and made it alittle more non "endurance" geo and made the bb stiffer butthe EVO also has the SAVE chainstays. Honestly the killer for me was that stupid looking Y seattube and the ugly integrated seat post clamp. It is now two years on the EVO after 4-5 on the synapse and I don't regret a single bit not going with the synapse. The EVO is a damn rocket ship.
