I know there are some other runners out there and I want to start a running thread.

I'm doing the NYC marathon as my first marathon in Nov.- super excited! I'd love to compare notes about training or hear about other races in the area.

I'm on a running website as well but it's just not as good as good old mtbnj is!

I am in.....I am a multisport runner, but run I do! So I will chat running with you. I belong to a tri forum, but since I am a mt biker, I feel out of place over there...so I agree....

mtbnj.com it is!

I'm happy to delve into marathon specifics if you like -- weekly mileage, fuel, running injuries, high-mileage days and more. Some basics are you'll need to stay healthy 😀 and get at least two (if not 3 or 4) 20+ mile runs in prior to the race, the final one 2-4 weeks before the race. But be aware the joint pain these long runs can cause. I had originally planned to do 4-5 of them but realized it would do more harm than good in my case. I ended up doing plenty of 13+ mile runs but only two 20-milers.

Also, refueling on a bike is easy since you can carry bottles or a camelbak with ease, but trickier while running. A lot of runners use the gel (Gu tastes far better than the Powerbar stuff) but shot blox ended up best for me. (I like the chewing and they taste good.) In my marathon I ate 3 shot blox at hour one, 3 more at hour 2, and 2 final ones at 2:45. Enough to keep from bonking and never felt queezy.

I may be doing another marathon in PA in October. If I do, I'll be putting in real training this time -- 60 miles a week (if possible). My 30-40 weekly miles before was pretty much the minimum.
FWIW, the wicking microfiber stuff isn't pricey and is worth its weight in gold. Cotton sucks. If you're close to a Road Runner's Sport, the VIP deal is great.

My next race is a 5K in Woodcliff Lake in June. Goal is sub 18.

Sharose, I am a longtime runner as well. More of a spring marathoner than a fall marathoner at this point. I will be volunteering at the NYCM Power Gel station with my family, as we do every year (mile 19). So place your special orders! 🙂

Enjoy your NYCM training. NYCM is a great first marathon because it is so entertaining. It was mine as well. I have run it 8 or 10x, I have to check...anything specific you'd like to know about the course or logistics defitiniely ask.

One thing I would add to what's already been said: find a group that you can train with. The miles will fly by and you will make great friends. Also, comparing notes with others, is a super fast way to get info and tips. Blisters, logistics, fueling, trouble shooting, etc. What area are you in? I can promise you that there is a local group near you.

(I know some people like to run alone, but since you're reaching out on a website I will assume you like to be social. ) Hope that helps, I can blab about running all day long.

best of luck had enjoy. Heidi

.

Justin -- you did 3:16 on 30 mpw?? I can't even address that....

Heidi <---whose NJM was somewhat suboptimal 😛

I live in Hoboken- the Hoboken Harriers are a great group!!

My biggest question now is how will I do the fueling thing......hmmm....:hmmm: I have a super sensitive stomach and then there is the aspect of carrying everything. How do ya'll feel about fuel belts?

I could never, ever use a fuel belt. I never understood it, but a few weeks ago I found out I have reflux, and I'm sure that is why. I have thrown up in long races from just having too much stuff in the back pocket of my tri-top (pulls on the tummy area..sorry if that's TMI). So, fuggedaboudit w/a fuel belt! I have had better luck with a Camelbak with plain water and just popping in some gels, jellybeans or whatever.

Others swear by their fuel belts. If you are right over there in Hoboken, and have access to the HoHa, I'm sure you will be able to conjure up at least one or two supported LTR's in preparation for NYCM with water. My running club does one in the Palisades in October...can you get there easily? You'd be welcome to tag along.

Now is the time to experiment with different fuels (solid + water, all liquid, gels, etc). Also, during wintertime when the water fountains are off , I hide some bottles around the park and tighten up my loop a little so I can access them repeatedly. I guess I'd do just about anything to avoid a Fuel Belt. ;-)

Having a "super sensitive tummy" to foods, and not being able to use a fuel belt are two different issues...You might actually love the fuel belt yourself. What have you used for your rides that has worked? Perpetuem is super easy to digest for most people.

I have a fuel belt -- the amphipod that can hold 4 8 oz bottles -- and I like it for training runs over 16 miles (when I know I'll need hydration). Keeps me from having to stash liquid somewhere along the route. But I would never use it in a race. Simply adds too much time.

(Amphipod belts have a great snap-in system as opposed to the velcro system that others use which wiggles loose over time. I watched a runner in the marathon last week wear one and it was bouncing with every step -- ugh.)

A lot of my running shorts have great liner pockets and that's where I stash my gel/shot blox. I would assume women's shorts have these as well.

Hi Heidi! Been a long time. Did we ever talk about running or just cycling?

dean karnazes runs with a backpack/camelbak on his training runs and he succeeds. Mind you he is probably not human tho 🙄 prob not even mortal

on my long runs depending on my needs and mood I'll either go with this nifty small pocket thing you slip onto the waist of your shorts (kinda like a cell phone thingy) and I'll put things in there. It doesn't bounce whatsoever. I normally run with a bottle in hand with strap. On the mega long ones I don't mund wearing a small fanny and throwing bottle + fuel/food in there

love to talk running here on mtbnj but out of curiosity is there an all encompassing runners forum like mtbr.com?

My wife runs with a camelbak mini-mule while training. She just tightens its down snug and has no issues it hold 45 oz. so she can get a good distance in that way. She ran her 1st 5K on sunday and placed 9th in the 20-29 category was very proud of her. She runs again on the 30th. Her time was 28:35 which isn't rocket fast but for her 1st time we were really proud.

southern NJ, congrats to your wife.

re "runners" forums...oh yes there are so many! I never heard of the one Sharose posted. But there is the legendary troll-tastic www.letsrun.com , as well as coolrunning, kickrunners, runners world has one....oh and guess what they talk about in their "other sports" category? 🙂

Lately, my runs have been limited to 5k at 5k pace. But it was nice to hit the road this morning and be out for a solid hr. 😀 Prob about 7-8 miles somewhere. Figure it out in a bit. The weather was supreme and it feels great to get our for a long one. NOW RUN! Or ride if that is your thing 😉

How much crossover do you see with riding & running. I notice the biggest difference in my riding when I do speed workouts running b/c of the strength it builds.

I ran my 1st 5K tonight.. The Running of the Bulls. Merrill Lynch's run for the American Heart Assoc.
It was alot of fun running through downtown streets. I can see why people get addicted.

saw them tonight

I have a fuel belt -- the amphipod that can hold 4 8 oz bottles

wish I had one of these belt.

The only thing that carries over from my running to biking is my endurance. I am also convinced the plyos and sprints help in some way too because it triggers quick twitch muscles. But I probably see greater returns from bike sprints.

I wouldn't suggest getting one unless you're looking to do 15-mile runs or longer. People hydrate far more than they need to.
:hmmm: I think it all depends on the person and the state they are in. I drink 20oz easy on a hour run in this sweet weather. IMO I still rather just have a bottle strapped to my hand. That way I work in some arms too 😉

Obviously you know your body best, but 20 oz of water per hour of running is a ton to me. I'm sure you're not in danger of going into hyponatremia, but man -- doesn't that much liquid sloshing around in your belly kill your flow? Have you experimented with varying amounts of hydration to see when and how much you need? I wear the amphipod energy belt on my 2hr+ runs so I don't have to carry or stash anything, but I don't drink anything prior or during for 90 min and shorter runs.
