Nah, by stomach doesn't slosh much.
90 minutes or shorter no water? Damn that is a while.
I can do an hr no water but I just don't like cotton mouth. For the most part, my 45min runs are fine without water. But when I have water I don't mind taking a sip from time to time just to keep my mouth moist.

I got some real cotton mouth on a 90-min run the other day, but outside of it being annoying it didn't affect my run at all. Comfort shmomfort -- I like going fast.

These days I'm doing more short (8 mi and under) runs and lots of speed work in prep for 5 and 10Ks this summer, so I just keep as empty as possible leading up to my run. Sunday was 200m repeats, yesterday was fast 6 miler (6:30 pace) and today is half-mile repeats. Woodcliff Lake 5K 6/14 is fast and flat for anyone interested.

Man yesterday morning I did a speed workout that rocked my legs so hard I still feel shakiness almost 2 days later, which I think is a first for a non-race or ultra long run day. Ten 220m repeats, walking 100m in between each. Started at 34 seconds and went down to 31. I tell myself the second to last one is my "last calculated lap" and the last is just balls out. Today was off, tomorrow will be a fast 6 and Tuesday 400m repeats. First serious 5K in years June 14 and I want to taste top 3 overall again.

Nice bro nice!
Past 3 days I put in ~20miles. First two days were 45min run with 5k spirit 1 milers here and there. I like to work on turn over speed. Yesterday was a long one. I want to taste the top again. Last time I won was in '04 and that was only for my age group. Pretty sure I won't take the top of any 5k. Im tired of seeing people turn in 18 sub 5ks. I think it's my turn! I will probably die tho and it will take a few more months for me to do 18 tho. Today, was a valiant effot at single palooza with a tall gear. Even tho it wasn't fast, I was burning time to time pushing 42x18. I am totally out of steam.

Today was a fast 6 miles -- 38:25 equates to 6:25 pace. I'm thinking I can probably go 6:00 pace for 10K and 5:40 for 5K, which would be around 17:45. I haven't done that since I was a kid 14 years ago so seeing will be believing -- a week from Sunday.

I don't mind not having to spend 90-180 minutes on a run, but that said I kinda miss the long runs I was doing in marathon training. There's a mental peace I was getting from those long runs that I'm not getting now. No music, no company, just me and the road for a long time. But I don't see a 15-miler helping improve my 5K any more than a fast 8 so I'll hold off on the long runs and enjoy my free time 😀

I'm guessing since you said you haven't done that in 14 years that you are about my age and I feel the exact same way! I'd love to be able to run sub-6 minute miles like I used to.....I wonder if I trained for speed if I still could.....I bet I could.....hmm.... :hmmm:

Sounds like you'll be rocking the local 5 & 10Ks this summer. Way to go~ be sure to tell everyone at the finish that you're also a mountain biker. 🙂 I've noticed that not too many runners are mountain bikers and vice versa.

I'm 33 and didn't run more than a few steps between the ages of 19 and 33, though somewhat serious cycling in 2008 put me in good shape to start running. I just started doing regular speedwork this past month and it's a lot harder than I recall 🙂 Ten 200m repeats yesterday absolutely took the wind out of me.
And I tell EVERYONE that I'm a mountain biker on hiatus. At least I think I am...

Putting yourself through speed workouts is no easy feat! I've found the treadmill (which I am NOT a fan of generally) helps with speed work. No running from 19-33 wow- what made you want to start back up again?

i had to give up biking. we had our second kid in september and it wasn't right telling the wife i was going out for a 5-hr bike ride with an infant and crazy 3-yr old boy at home. i plan to be back biking either next year or the year after, though at this rate i'm having so much more success in running that it'll be hard to give up itself.
its hard to compare mountain bike racing to running racing since your average mountain biker is much more serious and fit than your average runner, but when i raced XC I could maybe get 5th, sport class, 30-35. now i can be 5th in the entire race, and there's the outside possibility that with enough training i could outright win a race whereas i could never, EVER be the best mountain biker at an H2H race.

Interesting that you say that- as a female it feels as though it is easier to excel in mtn biking due to the small numbers- :hmmm:

You said it yourself -- tiny numbers of female MTBers make winning/placing much more doable in that arena. But there's no question in my experience the average cyclist is more committed. Much easier for someone to show up for the Fairlawn 5K than the H2H race at Wawayanda.

For me, I'm a much better runner than cyclist, and running is also easier to train for, so I can run 5x a week as opposed to never regularly riding more than 3x a week.

Signed up for the 6/19/09 June Moon 5k at Colonia Park (Somerset, NJ). I don't think I'll be setting any PRs or anything as I don't have time to do any serious prep and I need to keep my bike/run balance in harmony with the H2H going on. But I thought it'd be cool 5k to do since start time is after 7pm on a friday night and I just saw my gf run one there yesterday, the girls on the run 5k. I'll rather not just cheer this time. Sorry I forgot to mention it earlier but now it's bumped up $5 to the more expense race fee. PR's or not, I'll be running my hardest.

Cool story. First, yesterdays 5k at colonia park was really cool to spectate. The concept of http://www.girlsontherun.org/ is really awesome! There were hundreds of young ppl girls running. Some of those kiddies are fast too! Second, when I saw the first runners go by I yelled to the second place guy get him, get him! Then when they turned around and I saw him again I yelled c'mon man keep it up. You got this you got this. The #1 guy was maybe only about 300m away at the 2 mi mark. #1 looked tired and his form was all over. I know #2 had him in his sights and he looked more composed. After the race, he spotted me (of course I was the only one lycra kitted on my bike there) and told me thanks for keeping me strong. I patted him on the back and said no problem man 😀 But I didn't ask what place he got. I hope he got 1st!

I totally agree about bikers having to make more of an effort- that's for sure! Everyone keeps telling me how much time marathon training will take- I'm like- yes it will be it's still less than the average 4-5 hrs spent mountain biking- driving to the trails, taking out my bike, changing, riding for a couple hours, driving back, cleaning......

Good luck in the 5 K! great story- I love close finishes- I always feel bad for the 1st place person tho b/c everyone roots for the 2nd place person- lol

Knowing I was riding at night, a short 30min speed workout this morn and incorporated some errand running in it like the bank and post office. I like doing my errands on a workout by foot or bike. Kill two birds with on stone. I'm that guy. Then, in the evening set new PR on le fixie, 41.3 miles 🙂

much less. i trained mostly around 30 miles a week and then upped it to 40 in the final month. if you're truly competitive you should be doing 60 mi/week but to be honest my body was getting beat up with that many long runs. 5 runs a week with one long run between 12 and 20 miles worked well for me. WAY less time than cycling -- the wife is very happy let's say that much.

Won my 5k today. Woot.

Thats awesome!! Congrats! What was your time?

By the way- I joined flotrack- an online community of runners. It's ok- good because it's all runners but it's set up more like facebook than mtbnj. Just an FYI.

yeah everyone wants to be a social networking site these days. have you seen ning? you can start your own social network in 30 minutes. For training info and race gossip I read letsrun.

the race was poorly attended and i won with a time slower than i ran a few months ago in the middle of marathon-specific training. went out in 6:05 all by myself, got bored and a few guys caught me and my 2nd mile was 6:25, got passed by a bit by one guy, ran a 5:45 3rd mile and caught him and smoked him down the line. kinda fun but 18:52 isn't competitive enough to do squat at the bigger races. Going to up the weekly mileage to 40 and keep the speedwork going and run 17-something at the Teterboro 5K on July 4, which has thousands of particpants and is crazy fast (14:24 course record).

I hear what you are saying about bigger races but a 5:45 is a respectable final mile for sure!! I haven't done that since high school!!
