Don't Call it a Comeback

So I flew from JFK on Sunday to Moscow

Arrived Monday noon

Tuesday couldn't sleep, and went for a hill run here, as I'm staying with the in-laws in the apt building there in the background.

Cool shot. Is that a city park?

No snow in the motherland?:hmmm:

Contrary to popular belief Russia is not covered in 9 feet of snow year round....

Right! It's now actually just like New Jersey. ... ugh, was hoping for the snow!

Actually now that you mention it ...

Cool shot. Is that a city park?

Yes, this is kind of a park and a ski hill. They have lifts on top. Not a very interesting ski hill, like a 5 second run 🙄 But Moscow is not very hilly. This is probably the hilliest area 🙂

I see some nice flowy singletrack in that pic.

Like Baldpate, has some potential. But not a heck of a lot of area.

ugh... i so want to forget i went to that race.

It was not too bad ... compared to Stewart!!

Hey, looks like I took 3rd in the Cat 2 40-44. Good stuff, considering the knee injury and missing two races because of the knee. Three of six races were podium finishes.

At beginning of the season I was 1 year into my MTB career. But now I can't pull the newbie card anymore. So I'll stop.

I don't know if I'll upgrade to Cat 1, the plan is to see how much I can accomplish in off-season. If I get enough miles then I'll do it.

The Debauchery
Late on Saturday, I've returned to the US after a week of flying around the former soviet union on business, Russia and Belarus.

The drinking was almost mandatory, every evening, accompanied with heavy food with high fat content. Further, second hand smoke - I need to burn my clothes now. Lastly, no sleep. The only silver lining is that I won back all my discretionary spending money at the 21 tables.

There was some stuff on FB that told part of the tale. And Norm's MMS.

No riding of course, two quick runs. So I've gone completely off the reservation for an entire week, and gained 3 pounds. I think.

Today (Sunday) was the Westwood Velo CX race.

The cognitive failure
I've enrolled in 35+ Masters, thinking it was the same as the 2/3/4 35+ that I raced in Granogue and felt really good about.

HOWEVER. Gozick told me last night that this was not the same Cat, and this was an OPEN class. So this had MTB pros like Foco, and our own Maurice. Then it had a bunch of experienced road guys from Cat1/2 with really long resumes. And all shaved legs. Not a hairy bastard in the bunch except me.

The Outcome
Anyways, I got killed. Foco and Maurice lapped me on the last lap. I didn't DFL. I still zipped up and did the V in crossing the finish line.

It may have been somewhat better without the physical havoc of the past week, but not much. I battled with and let go a couple Kissema riders who were more my speed, and several others who were gettable.

My boys were there, screaming for me at the top of their lungs. That was cool. "Get him Papa". Well, I didn't, but told them I did.

Representing also were Fred and Ben in the B's (I probably should've raced B's). Also Jason, who had tubular issues. Fred was leading when we bailed.

Had chinese food, took boys MTBing in Mercer, and later today I had my hockey league. Full day.

Nice to see you back in the USA!

That my friend is a very nice pup.

Cross is as hard as it is fun. I enjoyed my 1.5 laps until I killed my rear tire on an unseen rock.
