Zoey From Halters Cycles has gone missing:

I've pretty much decided that she will come home when she's good and ready and no sooner. We have some colder weather coming and I'm certain that this will make this game a lot less fun.

It's really odd as she has been by my side nearly all day every day since I got her.

I spoke to a dog trapper at length last night and he is ready to help if I can get he to return consistently to one of the food stations i've setup W camera. So far that hasn't panned out.

The last 2 spots she's been spotted are on Zion and long hill. There were 1/2 a dozen people out all day looking for her for the last few days and she continues to evade us.

A woman on Long hill did send me a video of Zoey sniffing around her yard at 2 am the other day, so I know she's at least still kicking.

Earlier in the week she was on a camera on east mtn road too.

Fun
So based on this I’ll assume you don’t need the ad hoc search assistance.

Don’t want to overstep if you have a plan already and that’s the way you prefer to go. Seems like you have some pro advice already and hope she gets bored of hide and seek and gets home safe.

Hound Hunters are on the case.

Zoey has been spotted the sourlands nearly every day. Please keep me posted if you see her.

PLEASE text 609-924-7433 right away w the location if you see her:

She’s home!!

Thanks to everyone who helped with all the searching.

hound hunters FTW!!

This is my new favorite local nonprofit

Gonna be doing something special for them. Not sure what yet.

I learned a lot about the sourlands and dog behavior over the last 10 days.

Now to decide on which tracking collar? Suggestions?

Awesome. We use Tractive. It's cheap. The battery doesn't last too long once they are out of WiFi. Overall can't complain for the price

We have the Fi collar. The battery life is great. We had the jiobit before that, but the battery was disappointing.

We’ve had the Fi for a few years, so there may be better collars on the market now. But overall we’ve been satisfied.

I try to urge every dog owner to use a GPS collar.

Yeah, its called a leash.

I use the Fi collar. Works well and the battery lasts a month or two between charges. I don't have a fence and just let the dog out. I put it in "lost dog" mode while he's out there and it gives real time gps, just in case he decides to go exploring where he shouldn't.

Fantastic. They got her pretty quickly. Did she lose weight or has she been eating somewhere?

Glad she finally made it home.

while i generally do agree with this sentiment, we have had several leashes snap (typically at the clasp) so even the leash isn't completely foolproof (we now replace the leashes yearly just for peace of mind)
this is true.

For as alert as we all our when walking the dog, we all know it just takes that one unexpected moment for the dog to get spooked or pull off to the side and boom they are gone. Shelby is terrified of fireworks and Thunderstorms so I have to plan accordingly. A little contingency training goes a long way.

1. Shelby is trained to stop walking if I drop the leash. Its cued by the sound of the little poop bag container thing attached to the leash. I test her on this nearly every time we walk while I am collecting her deposit and also inside the house. She is conditioned NOT to drag her leash or move until someone picks up the leash and tells her OK. If she tries to walk the sound of the container reminds her to stop. I have walked several houses away from her and she will just sit there and wait even if I try to call her to me.

2. Since dogs can physically down faster than they can sit due to anatomy, Shelby knows the "down" command but we also have what I call "Emergency Down" which is simply raising my voice and repeating Shelby Down Shelby Down. We practice this in the yard sometimes (yard is usually reserved for Free play time) and I will also randomly try this with her during a walk and even in the house, with a treat reward after.

Not preaching here just giving some food for thought. Teaching the dog things like the above does require a good foundation of obedience and behavioral training.

So awesome. Been checking this thread daily to see this news! Should put a copy in the "Things that make you smile" thread.

I use Whistle for my dogs. The battery life is really good and the app is easy to use. It's cellular based instead of GPS so it's a bit slow to update when they're out in the woods but it's pretty good. I think the collars cost $100 up front and the service is $100 or so per year. My dogs don't wander that far off trail but if they were the more adventurous type I might have gone with one of the more robust GPS-based systems.
