Big Brown Beaver at Chimney Rock

under the footbridge by Newmans @ dusk on 8/1

very cool critter

too dark for a decent pic

😀 i love beavers, such cuties!

Am waiting for a good woodchuck/groundhog photo, cute suckers they are, like giant guinea pigs...

Spooked a fairly sizable groundhog coming up to the model airplane field at Allaire yesterday. Looked like he may have been near 20lbs. Too slow with the camera phone so no pics. Ran to the brush line, turned one last time to see if i was after him i guess, and then off into the grass.

happy turtles

The H_BBY and I hated disturbing this couple, but well, I just had to take a picture and share with you guys 😱

so snapped a shot, watched and cheered with a few "Oh baby" remarks, then left them alone to finish 🙄

Cool, Eastern Box Turtles

I've heard that this turtle is in decline in NJ, but I see them once in a while. I saw one burying eggs along the railroad tracks near the trestle in Stephens a few months ago.

On the box turtles, i've seen several in the last few months, so i don't know how much of a decline they are having (in the southern portions of the state anyway).

For the second time now this year i've run up on a group of turkeys on the trail. This time it was the East Creek Trail at Belleplain. Did an out and back after having ridden loop 1 of the new trails. All clear except a squirrel on the way out. On the way back i ran into a small group, 3 on the trail, and maybe 2 more in the brush. Took off pretty quick so no video or pics this time.

" Never feed a Coyote"

^ +1 😀

I guess it's deer mating season. I must have scattered at least 6 groups of deer last night at CR, typically 1 or 2 bucks hanging around 3-4 females. Oddly enough the bucks usually took off first, I thought they were supposed to be more aggressive around this time.

once the rut starts you wont see 2 bucks together unless there young or fighting for the does.

wonder if the weird weather we have been having messes around with their "timing"

I believe so. That October snow storm set things off one cycle. I've seen plenty of late fawns and quite a few are twins. Nature is providing a lot of stock in case some won't survive the coming winter.

I did find it odd to see bucks together. Whatever the reason, there was an absolute ton of deer at Chimney Rock on Thursday. Way more than usual.

We saw a mother bear with 3 healthy cubs this morning at KVSP. Good to see her teaching the cubs to run away from people! This was off of the red trail towards 206.

No camera of course, but my buddy almost hit a bear on the IndyCross "trail" at Mountain Creek. He almost hit the bear, i almost hit him. He/she stared us down for a sec then jumped over a berm into the woods. Nowhere for her to go so we backed up and gave a wide berth.

Seen plenty of bears up there but never so up close and personal. Pretty neat.
