Who's Racing the World?!?

Who's in for next Sunday's MTB race on the World Cup course at Windham Mtn?

I haven't ruled it out. There is a ton of options that weekend and I can't decide.

The last time there was a race of this caliber on the East coast of the US, I had just gotten my first MTB. (1991) That strange coincidence is pushing me to go.

I prerode the course today. The race will be short, steep, and very intense. I don't know how any local racer could pass up the chance to participate in such an awesome event. There are still some rooms available in the neighborhood. It's worth making a weekend out of.

It is also part of the NYS series. I did see a couple of H2Hers up there today.

The course

The official map makes it 5.21km = 3.25 miles. There's a prologue that starts somewhere in town and goes up to the ski area, didn't ride it, have no idea about it other than the end of it exists on the map.

I went up there Sat. with a friend and met up with more riders there. We did 5 laps. I was doing 25-30 minute laps. I was told to expect the elites at 15-20 minutes a lap!

The course really hits hard- lots of climbing, and then steep descents. If you look at the profiles it appears that the xc course is steeper descending than the downhill course. The climb is broken into sections so there is a chance to recover somewhat on the way up in between grinds but i suspect there will be almost constant attacking going up and just holding position going down. It all happens very fast.

The big climbs all happen on fire/access roads with good traction, there are a few sharp short singletrack climbs with questionable traction. The singletrack is not that technical with any boggy or muddy areas being spanned by plank bridges. In my opinion there are only 3 sections that are technically challenging, all on downhill sections: 1 because of grapefruit sized loose rocks and the other 2 because the trail corkscews back on itself in steep descents with loose dirt.

All in all I think it will be amazing and fun. I wouldn't miss it.

EDIT: Does anyone have the elevation per lap?

See that's the problem. The profile map says that but garmin files I've seen say anywhere between 3.6 to 4.5 miles. Just curious to what is correct. Also the main climb shows to be about 600 feet of vert but garmin files have shown almost 900 ft per lap. Just curious about what we may be in for.

Ok, at least the elevation makes sense- total change in elevation from start to finish is about 600 but we go up and down a few times, increasing our actual traveled elevation amount. 900 'feels' right.

I've never seen a race where the official mileage matches the garmin mileage. As you point out I've also seen huge swings in reported gps mileage.

Nick and I will be there. I am doing the cat3 and he is doing cat 1. I hope to see more of you there! it will be a blast!! Although while climbing I may want to kill myself or hope that an asteroid hits the earth at that very moment and puts me out of my misery lol.... I know there is a schdule "training" ride on the course saturday before the actual race which is sunday....

Ben ... GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!😀

I'm assuming this is open for pre-riding during the week? Can anybody confirm?

Ryan I'm pre riding there on Wednesday, I'll post up with details.
RC ... :getsome:

As far as I know you can freely ride the XC course up to and including Wednesday - after that it is dictated by UCI regulations:
"Practice times have been clearly outlined and will be strictly followed in accordance with UCI requirements. (Cross country: Thursday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. and downhill: Friday, Aug. 27, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.) "

I might be up there Wednesday as well Thursday at the latest. Seems like my only opportunities to get up there and try out this course.

Ryan it looks like tomorrow (weds) is the last day to pre-ride. I'll be there with my SS. Saturday we have a CX race in Mass, could be tough to race Sunday.

:hmmm:
