Wawayanda State Park Conditions

Is it more a people issue? Probably don't want to walk along eating an orange or bologna sammich.
Never knew bears were attracted specifically by oranges. Also, did you know that Bologna residents consider derogatory the name 'Bologna' used for Mortadella? Which is exactly why we call it that!

Pumphouse trail is now open again, guess they fixed the bear problem

Had a good ride yesterday in the half inch of hero snow. Only saw one bike track but tons of bear track. Looks like we’re in for an epic mud cycle now

Smashed out a short but strenuous loop on the back side at 13 degrees. Got the first ice ride of the season on lookout and cut out a medium sized maple blowdown in the mojo swamp.

Hopefully, it stays cold and we keep getting these little clipper storms. Best time of year to be a Jersey MTBer. Stud up or shut up!

I got farther than I expected yesterday. The Eskimo’s have 57 words for snow and I rode at least 50 variations in the park. Blower pow, breakable crust, magic crust and glare ice to name a few. The one constant is high effort, bring a friend and trade off trail breaking duties. The only thing that was down right sketchy is the ice rut left behind by a fatbiker who went for a slush ride on Monday. For reference, I am on 4.8s gripstudded for her pleasure.

Did a CCW lake lap plus added ice shenanigans with the primary surface being packed, squeaky goodness. The tread is well packed from walkers but still fairly draggy. The more tires on it the better at this point.

Of course, it can never be all positive. Some slob on a quad made an absolute mess of timber and south end. When will the park get serious about ATV enforcement? I for one do not want to see all the trails converted into wallowed out double track.

@Skunkape

It's not always random kids and such on the quads in there. I have run into some of the younger rangers horsing around back in the woods on the state ATVs.

I've seen this as well. Usually the ATV traffic I've come across is on the fire roads, and mostly on the West Milford side, and some coming from the houses that border the Barry Lakes side in the area of Iron Mountain road, and occasionally along the pipeline in the Cabin Trail, Tombstone, area.Seeing activity on the single track is definitely concerning, and hopefully does not continue.

Sunday and the park is open. There were some snowmobiles on Iron Mt. trail and Wawayanda trail.
I stayed on the main roads which were all plowed but still snow covered. I met a nice group of snowshoers
heading out Hoeferlin trail heading South from the office. About twenty people. I told them to get going
and pack down those trails! I'm waiting to ride them, but I need you first. They usually do about six miles
so that will be nice. Cold ride today, 7° actual and feels like -7°. Plus the speed of the bike, burrr.

Ah, more evidence of our soft-bodied four wheel brethren shredding it up inside the park boundaries. I see they’ve smashed the fence down at the aux. entrance for easier access to the lake for donut practice. It’s good that they done that. Nuthin to see here.
