Vamos pa' México hermano

The length of the climb is around 6 miles with 1,590 feet going up. My time... Let's just say I made it to the top.

Thank you. I had in my mind that this was more like 2-3 miles! I was only there for a couple of H2H races a few years ago. I now remember, this is that narrow road with a lot of cars up and down. No me gusta 🙁 I'll still give it a try though.

the most cars ive ever seen climbing and descending combined was like 4

I think it depends on the time/season. If you try to go on a Saturday afternoon during foliage season, forget about it. For the most part, I've not run into much traffic going up/down Perkins.

So ... uhhhhh ... when you are starting out in Canada, you might want to keep your eye out for this guy ... And if you are planning on dealing with him by, oh I don't know, hitting him with a train that might not work. And sending a bunch of black bears after him ... that might not work either ...

Prompted by this and having seen the Revenant I added to my bear "deterrent arsenal" a 125 db marine air horn and a 120 db whistle that I will not take from my neck. I know, this will probably just annoy the bear while he eats me but it makes me feel better.

Quick update

Work has kept me really busy but I've been making some progress on several fronts.

Training
The last 3 weeks I managed to get in (each week) a hill interval ride with a loaded bike, a "general" ride (supposed to be a 2-3 hr easy ride but haven't got the time for that, so ended up being 1 hr tempo rides), a run or two (from 30 min to 1 hr) and 3 longer rides on the last 3 weekends:

Loaded Fatboy.jpg

73 mi, 5.5K ft climbing, 6:43 hr riding time/ 7:58 hr total time on fatty.
76 mi, 4.4K ft climbing, 7:50 hr riding time/ 10:35 hr total time on loaded fatty (54 lb w/o water or food).
80 mi, 6.2K ft climbing, 6:38 hr riding time/ 6:54 hr total time on loaded Air 9 (40 lb w/ water and food).

I'm now riding the bike that I'll take to the trip (last long ride), except for some changes to come in a few weeks. I will be changing the wheels since I'll be running a dynamo on the front and the rear wheel is not up to the task. I might change the aerobars too since I can't find a good position on the ones I have now. The installation of the cables from the dynamo to the usb charger, light, etc. seems to be a real pain in the ass and I need to get it exactly right.

Gear
I have most of that on hand or ordered. I'll post some pics soon. Also, I need to start figuring out where everything will go and how to pack it. Right now I have a bit box with a bunch of little loose items that I need to put in zip locks, or organize somehow.

The tent is en route so I'll give it a try next week.

Race planning/navigation
Now I need start "planning" the race. Basically, just looking at distances between towns and getting info on camping grounds, gas stations, bike shops, etc. into my Garmin. I'm not liking the eTrex 35t at all but that's what I got so I'll have to figure out how to get it to work.

That's it for now. Looking to finally clock 100 tomorrow. Of course, now that I say it something will get in the way...

Did you pop your 100 Cherry yet? I have a 140 miler planned for the road tomorrow if interested. It'll be on a road bike and a completely flat loop.

No! I want to crack that tomorrow and was looking where to go. I don't have a road bike and I really want to ride on the bike I'll take. Maybe I can join you for part of your ride. I'll PM you.

YES!!! Finally! Going from 80 to 100 was tough, even though I didn't do much climbing on those 20 miles. I'd never be able to sit on the bike for 140 miles. Maybe at the end of the race 🙂

The rain gear did very well, except the gloves but I knew that.

100.06 miles, 7.2K climbing, 9:29 hr total time, 9:03 riding time

Now I just have to get used to do this every day, on gravel roads instead of paved roads and with a heavier bike 😀

Yeah buddy!!!!!! Going out for six hours from home tomorrow if you want to join. 10-4, er 9-3, I need to be in Galloway dressed fur work at 6pm.

Thank you for the offer John. I can barely walk, or sit But tomorrow I have to be at work the whole day.

Btw, congrats on the podium at Waway!

Sweet!! Sorry I didn't get back to you soon enough, I've been sorta unmotivated the past couple weeks.

Good luck on your adventure ! It certainly would be nice to have some extra time to prepare but I understand you must deal with the cards you have been dealt. Consider this, the first time I rode cross country I did just to keep a buddy of mine company. I didn't even own a bike,( I borrowed one of his ) , I wore jean shorts yes jorts and a tshirt. His wife followed us in a van so we didn't have to carry gear but that being said we never travelled any more than 50 miles a day but we made it just the same. So I'm just saying be as prepared as possible but don't sweat the fact that others may be a lot more prepared than you. If you ever need some ride company let me know I am in Gladstone so I am not that far away.

Thank you @jimmy g . Yes, sometimes I get a bit desperate looking at the prep/training other people are doing but I still want and will do this. Thank you for the offer to ride, I'd love some company but do know that my pace is pretty slow! 🙂.
