Tymor Recap

The Hat
Team MTBNJ Halter's
Cat 3 30-39, my first H2H race. Was kind of nervous cause I put a 19T cog on last night and I had only rolled with a 20T before. Pre-riding the loop confirmed 19T was ok. I could clear everything except the steep hill at the top. Also I decided to run the end of the next climb where you have to make the quick left then right on the to the single track.

Our group was the 1st to go. Lined up on front line with Capers and got off pretty fast, but the geared guys blew me away to the single track climb. I was maybe in 8th going up the climb. Right away I could see I could climb better than these guys and decided to take the rootier part to the right. Mistake, I got kind of hung up and 2 guys passed me to the left.

Heard Dustin say "go soundz" then headed into the single track where it was pretty impossible to pass. There were 3 guys in front of me all bunched up together. Unfortunately, the guy up front was going kind of slow for my taste and I couldn't really attempt to pass 3 guys at the same time. Started to panic a bit as I couldn't see anyoe past the 3rd guy .. looked like Capers was long gone. I said "c'mon guys" and the 3 in front of me seemed to pick it up a bit.

Eventually I saw my opening on a slight uphill with some grassy area on the side. Was able to pass 2 guys then hit a root and fell .. Probably should have waited until the double-track to pass. After I get back on and start pedalling, I hit some other rooty stuff and my only water bottle goes flying off the holder - note to self: get a bottle holder that's not 20 years old. Guy behind me says I dropped my bottle. I feel like I'm far behind enough already, so I just say "it's ok" keep going. Haven't had a sip of water yet, but don't feel too bad at this point.

Panic'ing more at this point and start mashing on the pedals and pass another guy on the single track climb. After that I'm out to the double track climb. I pass a few more people and sense of relief comes as I see that Capers is not too much ahead. There's maybe a group of 5 guys. Then we get to that crazy climb I can't make. Pedal up as much as I can then dismount. All the 5 guys in front of me are walking. I'm like what the hell, I can run this thing. I run on the left side and pass all of them. All this recent hike-a-bike / bush wacking I've done recently has paid off in full.

Go up the climb after that into that tight left and right. Clear all the logs up front. I see Luke and ask him "what place"? He says he thinks 1st and calls me sandbagger. Back at the start line now .. I hear some others say "go soundz". My SS is hurting me on the gravel road .. I think 1 guys goes past me. I see Capers right behind me. I beat him to the rooty climb. I can really use some water now, but I have none. After the climb, it looks like Capers has more in the tank, so I let him pass. I think 2 other guys passesd me at some point. Mouth is feeling really dry at this point and kind of light-headed. I hope I don't faint. I look for the water bottle where I think I dropped it, but don't see it so I keep going.

Once past the single track and back on the climbs, I can feel I'm gaining on the leaders again. But f*ck I need water. Just suck it up and head to the climb I can't clear. I see Capers walking (his 40lb bike is probably hurting him) and someone else ahead of him. I do my running man thing and pass both of them. Once I get to the next climb, I can see the NYCmtbStyle guy at the top. Maybe I can catch him. I clear the 3 logs, pass Luke and can see that I'm not gonna catch him. I come in 5 seconds behind him and 15 behind the 1st place guy. I drink a bottle of the best luke-warm tasting water I've ever had.

p.s. I wasn't planning to do all the H2H races this year, but now I'm thinking I could have a shot at the overall. I already missed Waway, so .. hmm..

p.p.s. MattyB's Misfit is crazy light. I think I may need one of them aluminum bikes. My XT wheels should be coming soon, so they should help.

Haha, actually it's a 26 lb bike but it felt like a 100 lbs when you ran past me.

Sucked that you had to bail early Jimmy. Felt weird going up to get your prizes. Dudeman tried to put the medal on me. I told him I wasn't Jimmy and he was really confused. Announcer dude got a kick out of the napkin-note permission slip you gave me.

So yeah, I have some stuff for you

Good Job Soundz! that was a good race between you and my two friends who took 1st and 2nd. I guess we can say in this CAT 3 age group, asians rules. 😀

Great race Soundz, you passed me at some point. I got a great start but couldn't hold it together on the hills. My climbing sucks.

4th place + flat tire =

I was riding Rob's wheel and feeling great after the inital short climb, I was EXACTLY where I wanted to be. Well that smile was wiped from my face thanks the worlds sharpest invisable rock. 1/4 mile in I heard a hiss...didn't worry right away cause the juice will work and I have trail side assistance from Jdog at Halter's...I beeged and begged for it to seal so i can hit it with a Co2 and not loose too much time, sadly it didn't. i took a gamble and tried to blast it with Co2, no dice. Now im putting a tube in it and pumping away as a SS field goes on with out me, so does the 30-34 and the 35-39 and then the 40-44...finally im all set and back in the saddle "on you left...on your right" over and over again. I say to myself "dustin, you are going to DIE! or worse DNF"😡 I settle in and push. I pass Luke and tell him why it LOOKS like i suck and give a quick flex...his flash makes me lose 18 spots. Then starts round one of *32x19 vs death climb from hell* i have to dismount 2 times due to fatiuge and my cramp belt getting tight, some dude who makes awesomely funny videos for the site catches me, I don't want to look like a punk so i hop on his wheel and he does a great job of pulling me thru to the start/finsh for the end of lap 1. Thanks again mtbNJ Rob, giving me credit for being on a SS was a big help. He knew he shouldn't have caught me but a few simple words was enough ammo for me to win my battle vs me

Now on to lap 2. I continue my push and just when i start to except my fate...DFL I see a SS cog. I ride his wheel and make my move. A little ways down the trail BAM another SS cog. In my head "thats 2". *round 2 32x19 vs murder climb of fire* I do the same walk/run 2 parts this time I'm super high on picking up 2 spot. I remember 3 dudes at the start line with cool skulls on their kits (forget the team name) well I had one in my sights. We stayed close and he offered for me to pass even though i was putting NO pressure on him...say to myself "he's DEAD" make my move, killed the top part of the climb in the face gave a look back and he was nowhere to be found, that make 3 spots. At this point I'm usually signing to myself normally its Lady Gaga or Weezer...its always something stupid but repetitious...well this time i was my very own color commentator. Werid I know but fun, I made it sound like I was doing something amazing. I hit the gnar DH section, the whole time saying to myself "one more dead body...let me get one more dead body" Pass Utah on his pre-ride, he looks at me like I suck the same way Luke did. Pass thru the last grass section and can hear music and EVERONE chanting "we want chainsaw...we want chainsaw" I come down into the lot and sprint out to the finish.

I worked really hard to finish where i did and over came a crippiling flat way early in the race. Now we have 1 month until Lewis Morris where I hope to make some noise and shake up the top 10. Most of this is true except the obvious🙄 I had a shit ton of fun today and learned just when you've prepared as best you can and feel great a kick in the gatchie can come from any direction...hope you enjoyed

Congrats boys and girls! I've enjoyed reading the recaps and stories. Sorry to hear about all the flats! The blog was pretty sweet as well. I have to admit, I wish I was there. Maybe I will have to gear up for Lewis Morris....:hmmm:

Superfun course today! I started fast to get to the ST first and held off the pack till I made a stupid mistake in stopping to pick up another water bottle. One guy in my class passed me and two others that I had passed earlier. So I was stuck behind the two guys as I watch my guy slowly pull away through the flowy singletrack. I finally got passed those two and put the hammer down and had him about 50yds going into the big climb. We stay that way up to the top and figured I catch him on the DH and sprint it out until I felt the sealant spraying my leg as I crested the big climb. After a few obsentities and a frantic attempt to hit it with CO2 the leak becomes worse and I say F it and hop back on and it finally seals with about 20# left in it. I ended my day sprinting with Kirt and Eric Model to the finish. Luckily I stayed in 2nd but learned some valuable lessons in time management. I got beat by a really cool guy named Wade.

Learned that sometimes it better to be the hunter than the hunted and seconds really count in these races.

Thanx Rob for the preride and advice on the course. Congrats to all my fellow MTBNJers, we kicked some Hiney out there today!

H2H cat 2 40-44, my first mountain bike race. I figured it was time to put it to the test and see how I fare against racers my age and put my money where my mouth is so to speak. My goal was to have a strong race and not come home wishing I pushed harder.
Traffic Jams
It felt reassuring lining up next to Kirt at the start line, racing with a familiar face helped calm me down and enjoy the event more. The first lap reminded me of leaving a Yankee game at the end of the 9th inning, everyone is hauling ass out of the stadium so you don’t get caught in the traffic over the GW bridge. For this race all the traffic was on the climbs, it took a lap to sort things out, get around the traffic and get down to the business of racing. Kirt and I rode together for the 1st lap and going into lap 2 we were pretty sure #1 and #2 place riders were in front of us. We passed a few more riders and came upon the 2 leaders in our field just before the halfway point of lap 2(the fun rolling section that had black dirt). From here on out I think we all knew that this was now our race, the 4 of us battling it out. With the big climbs in front of us no one was strong enough to make a dash for the finish line, which was still 3+miles away. So the leader set the pace and Kirt and I sat in 3rd & 4th behind the #2 guy.
The Race
In some ways this 2nd lap was less stressful without wondering who was leading and worrying about getting stuck behind in the traffic. At this point it was simply a race to the finish and whoever blew up on the hills or made a mistake on the downhill’s would not podium. As the climbs wore on, the leader was beginning to pull away from us but he was still in eyesight. Toward the last series of climbs Kirt was behind me and sensed he could take the #2 guy in front of me on the down hill and give the leader a run for the money at the finish. So Kirt passed me and chased the #2 guy on a steep dissent. The #2 guy sensing Kirt behind him was forced to pick up the pace but pushed too hard and went down. I felt bad for this guy fortunately he was not seriously hurt but he was not that quick to re-mount which left me sitting in 3rd position to chase Kirt and the leader. The last grassy up hill was a test to see who really belonged in 1st place. The leader looked back at Kirt and pushed harder to stay out of his reach and all I could do was push myself to stay behind Kirt.

The leader finished 3 seconds in front of Kirt who got 2nd and I was 3 seconds behind Kirt for 3rd place. I could have not asked for a better race.
