Things to do

So I have a broken hand  and as of right now I really shouldnt be riding my bike at all :cry: I am sure soon enough I will be on rail trails again but does anyone have any suggestions on how to stay fit in the meantime? Prior to my incident I needed work on climbing. Would running intervals help improve my fitness for climbing? Once I am healed I would like to start in on some cyclocross also which is pretty much a 40 minute interval haha. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, so sorry to hear about your hand. Do you have an indoor trainer? That might be a good investment for the long term, keeping fit during the winter too.

I love running, I can't say for sure if it will make you faster on the bike, but it's surely a good thing to have in your bag of tricks. A friend of mine just told me he felt that running is improving his bike racing, but it took a while for that to happen.

Good luck with your rehab. Glad you can still type 🙂 Heidi

That is a bummer. How did you break it?

I do triathlon, so I run and bike regularly...well all the time actually. Running is a great way to stay fit. You need to approach t cautiously. Even if you have strong bike fitness, it will not automatically translate into running fitness.

Start slowly. The risk of injury is very high. If you have not run before, a walk/run program is a great way to start.

When I broke my thumb in the middle of the 08 season I tried to be as disciplined as possible in doing what I could as my focus was to still come back and keep my series alive. For 8 weeks I made sure I ran 2x a week to maintain cardio, whereas before I rarely ran. I also did spin classes 1 or 2x a week and whenever I was in front of the TV at night just hanging out I was doing lunges and squats and stuff like that. Of course none of this completely replaces riding however I was pretty surprised how quickly things came back together once I was able to ride again.

+1

Last year i busted up my shoulder a couldn't ride. The stationary bike in my basement helped me keep my sanity intact if not my fitness level. Hope you heal up quick.

Sorry about the hand. I agree running will maintain cardio. Stairs or hill intervals will help with your hill climbing cardio start slow, lunges and squats will help with the hill climbing legs. Also get a Bosu ball or a Swiss ball and practice balancing on it, sitting, kneeling, etc..Just don't fall off on your broken hand. I have found that having good balance has relly helped my MTB and it will help build a strong core.
