The good people of Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo go through all the trouble of designing and building all these fancy gear changey thingies and you people go and rip em' off your bikes!

IMO anyone with a 1 X 9 is a future Single Speeder still in the transformation stage. Drop 8 of the gears in the back and become a stronger rider. Word.
on most ss cassete hubs, you can fit 1-6 cogs, perfectly spaced, and run up to a six speed setup. just adjust the limiter screws on a road deralluer accordingly and you'll be set. you would still have a derailluer, but untill internals get lighter, this would probably be the best option.
My other 3 bikes are single speed rigs. One lighter rigid HT for just straight pedaling, another 24" DJ/Park bike and a SS roadie bike so I guess I'm a singlespeeder in some aspects. Not sure about being a stronger rider either.
But for my 6" sussy rig that's about 35 lbs and setup for some jumps and drops I pretty much need the 1x8. A SS setup on that would make it very hard to climb and not able to get that extra pedal power going downhill and taking advantage of said suspension travel.
