The Official mtbnj 1x9 Thread...

family of five pulls over and asks a person standing outside a store how to get to the local park. the person responds, "on a singlespeed." :getsome:

So Celine Dion rides into a bar on a singlespeed and the bartender says, "Why the long face?"

:mad2:Holy Shnikey!!! all this talk of SS bikes. The good people of Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo go through all the trouble of designing and building all these fancy gear changey thingies and you people go and rip em' off your bikes!

All these threads do seem to turn to SS talk don't they. I've been toying with the idea of converting my old rockhopper. Stupid SS Kood-Aid

I was talking about the gear CHANGEY thingies not the gear TURNEY thingies ya friggin' weirdos!!! :argue: Are my descriptions not technical enough 😛

IMO anyone with a 1 X 9 is a future Single Speeder still in the transformation stage. Drop 8 of the gears in the back and become a stronger rider. Word.

My other 3 bikes are single speed rigs. One lighter rigid HT for just straight pedaling, another 24" DJ/Park bike and a SS roadie bike so I guess I'm a singlespeeder in some aspects. Not sure about being a stronger rider either.

But for my 6" sussy rig that's about 35 lbs and setup for some jumps and drops I pretty much need the 1x8. A SS setup on that would make it very hard to climb and not able to get that extra pedal power going downhill and taking advantage of said suspension travel.

on most ss cassete hubs, you can fit 1-6 cogs, perfectly spaced, and run up to a six speed setup. just adjust the limiter screws on a road deralluer accordingly and you'll be set. you would still have a derailluer, but untill internals get lighter, this would probably be the best option.

I actually had a Profile bolt-on hub that was made for just 6 speed and made a custom cassette for it along w/ a 6 speed XT thumbshifter. On my suspension bike, I liked the feel of a trigger shifter better and liked having a much lower 1 and 2 gear. But that 6 speed setup was pretty cool.

I agree, the internal hubs are pretty heavy and that weight isn't in a good area either. The g-boxx stuff looks good in that the weight is centered on the bike and the rear wheel can have equal dish.

don, you can use a regular shifter with a 2-6 sp setup. once the limiter screws on the der. are set, the shifter will be limited to the amount of indexed shifts it can make within the swing of the der.

Yeah I hear ya, I do believe a SS makes you a stronger rider, at least for me, but truth be told I've often considered a 1 X 9 and I may very well do that one day if I'm in the mood. I change my mind often when it comes to bike set ups. Why you ask? It's fun to screw around. I think they call it bordem! I just tried to turn this thread into a SS discussion as "instantly" as possible! When money allows, its great to have differently set up bikes to match the diverse places we ride. I'd like a 1 x 9 for Hartshorne/Huber when I visit there, a full 27 gears for certain parts of Allamuchy, and a SS for Deer Park. Yeah baby!
