Do you consider VH of any era "strictly METAL"?

Also, anyone very familiar with Machine Head?
Gimme your top three tunes...

I was wondering the same.

According to this

Van Halen falls under Pop Metal....by having the word METAL on it, I guess it does classify as strictly METAL

speaking of Van Hagar, anybody going so see Chickenfoot? and where do they fall? Farm Metal?

Not really fair to have Van Halen in the same group as Europe or Winger. It kind of renders that chart a bit absurd.

haha I'll take Winger and Europe over Lita Ford, Doro and The Darkness....

Let's leave VH as Hard Rock and even VHDLR as Classic Rock.

Of course. It's roots, man.
If it weren't for bands like Van Halen and Kiss, then Pantera wouldn't even exist.
That fact alone makes Van Halen worthy of discussion on this thread (in my mind at least).

Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf and of course Sabbath are roots.
If Van Halen (of any era) never existed there'd still be Pantera. Sabbath were Dime and Phil's favorite band, which is no surprise given the excellent covers they did and Phil helping out on Iommi's first solo record.

I think VH was more of an influence on peeps like Yngwie Malmsteen and Racer X (Paul Gilbert).

Dimebag Darrell was just as much a fan of Van Halen and Kiss as he was Black Sabbath.
He was buried in a Kiss casket with Eddie's guitar. It doesn't really get more fanatic than that.

Very true. I remember seeing shots of him during KISSmania in the late '70's with Paul Stanley face paint, but musically what he did was more influenced by BS.

Where's that website that elzoller posted here about a year and a half ago???

I'm not gonna get into the whole naming thing, but the level of aggression permeating the first few Van Halen albums, particularly the s/t and Fair Warning, makes plenty of so-called "metal" sound pretty damn weak in comparison.

And the Van Hagar stuff is essentially a different band, IMO, though parts of Diver Down and 1984 certainly indicated a move in the direction of that sound.

Fair Warning was the first VH album I got into after taping it from my brother's record and remains my fave VH record. IMO it's pretty heavy. Them & AC/DC were my stepping stones to heavier stuff.

Were you at Starland last time they played? That show was awesome, when they did Destroy, Erase, Improve the place exploded. Such a good band. There in my Top 5 fo' sho'

-Jim.

Nah, I saw them just after Obzen came out, but they were headlining for Ministry. I watched Meshuggah, and then left the venue before Ministry hit the stage. There was no way that the show would've gotten any better after Meshuggah played. Anything after that would have just seemed sub-par. (not to mention, I've seen Ministry before, and I'm not that big a fan to begin with).

I am going to the May 23rd show at Terminal 5 this time. Can't wait.

big metal fan. 2 types I don't like. Winger/poison type garbage although I do like some bands that some might put in that category ie. early motley crue and WASP and "cookie monster" lyric stuff. I love maiden and priest, megadeth and overkill. I've been watching the evolution of metal on VH1 which is awesome. I noticed some bands that I feel are metal don't even want to be linked to metal. Led zeppelin, kiss, van halen, to me Metal.. Atomic punk by VH, parasite by kiss, communication breakdown by zeppelin to name a few soo heavy. some bands too numerous to mention change for the worse over time and very few change back. enter sandman comes to mind. anyway, what are some newer heavy bands of any genre that don't have "cookie monster" vocals. I want to update. the newest band I really liked broke up already, system of a down. I don't mind a little cookie monster if there is some more human singing mixed in, but to listen to it nonstop I can't take for whatever reason.
