SSaP...where P =

ok so i seriously under estimated this insanity thing.

while i didn't think that the work itself was hard, apparently not moving like that (the cutting/squats/jumping/blah-blah-blah) wreaks havoc on your body. i'm in pretty good shape and my legs are DONE.

my ride today was almost comical. but at least i wasn't drunk, so i got that going for me.

...which is nice.

i experienced the same thing with P90X. first time i did the plyometrics workout i figured what the hell could a little jumping around do? it got my heart pumping during the workout... but two days later i swear my legs were hammered. same thing happened with my back/shoulders and the kickboxing crap. man did i get stiff after day 1, and even worse after day 2.

The dude at my local pizza joint did insanity. Sweet jesus what a difference, hes like half the size of what he used to be. I dont doubt cocaine and lots of sex with young, hot ladies played a role, but damn, he looks good.

HAH! I thought the same thing until I did day 1... which as you know is mild compared to the whole first month. Month 2 you will honestly laugh through your first DVD. Laughing as in "is this dude for real?"

Enjoy! It kicked my ass into shape very quickly

This is it. Training starts today. One more weekend like that and I'll take Matty with 15 minutes for any money.

Insanity, P90X, train with my wife - I highly recommend any of these to go along with a regular dose of riding.

Creatine is a waste of time for cycling. You will also likely decrease your ability to process water and maintain proper hydration. You may see some moderate power gains for say a sprint but totally useless for SSaP. The last time I was over 180 I was doing that shit, fucked my stomache for years. I'm leaner and stronger now 15 years later - just go with high protein low carb. Kill the alcohol and lose 10 lbs in 4 weeks no problem.

A group of my friends at school are doing P90X three days a week after school, and the workouts sound awesome. I think a regular routine of that stuff would do me a lot of good. But there's just not enough time in the week for me to ride 8-10 hours, climb at the gym another couple hours, and then do P90X. Stupid job gets in the way. 🙄

Why aren't you climbing with me chris. Oh yeah you are far away. Jake isn't, Jake should come to the gym so I can show him what a weakling he is 😉

One of these days I can come up your way for an evening session.

Are you climbing at NJRG or The Gravity Vault? I've never been to the latter.

I wish I could pick up a 50 pound box or do more than 1 pull up, let alone climb something. Sounds like good time.

NJ rock gym is about 3 miles from my door so I go there. I can meet you half way somewhere. That would be fun.

i gotta be honest, i was (am) floored. my legs still hurt.

coke and banging young ladies. the original 1980s insanity workout.

enjoy? enjoy NOTHING! this is crap. my wife has gone though it twice now (she's down below married weight which is full-on nuts). i really don't know how she was walking around.

agree with the cross training...always have...and have gotten TONS of shit about it over the years here. no correlation between lifting and cycling improvement, blah, blah, blah whatever. do 200 squats a couple times a week and tell me you aren't going to see power gains. silliness.

as for the creatine, i know what you're saying BUT i'm also not planning on doing it for more than a month. by the time the SSaP rolls around it will be flushed from my system leaving only the benefits.

my diet is EXACTLY that now. high protein, low carb. i've eliminated 90% of the alcohol as well and expect when the final 10% is eliminated i'll be down to 184/5 pretty quickly.

jake doesn't get invited by luke. that's why jake isn't at the rock gym. my daughters really want to go and there is a gym 5 minutes away in randolph. i just can't get into a new sport right now for several reasons...not least of which is my scumbag company let me go a month and a half ago smack in the middle of doing the best work of my career. so yeah, there's that.

I wish I could pick up a 50 pound box or do more than 1 pull up, let alone climb something. Sounds like good time.

but you're high speed, low drag. which is nice.

Havent been to that one but hear good things about it.
I'll usually go to Gravity Vault when I have the urge, but stick to bouldering since I havent done the belaying class yet.
mtbnj climbing day...

Yeah, but with the cross training you aren't doing enough cycling to see the biggest gains for racing. The guys riding more are gonna beat you out most of the time.

lol, I still remember the first real crossfit workout I did. I...legit.. couldnt walk down stairs. Hooked ever since 🙂

I'm w/ Mandi..Enjoy it! Because it never gets easier :getsome:

I'll give my .02 on this one b/c I think it depends on what level you're talking about. I relied solely on crossfit training last year and restricted my road rides to commuting (12mi each way to gym) recovery rides and charity events. My mountain rides were limited to races and occassional group rides.
I was happy with my results.
IMO, you can win cat3 and some cat2 races relying on cross training. As you progress to cat1 and pro, that balance needs to shift to more time in the saddle however, you can not eliminate cross training from your routine. A solid strength and conditioning program is necessary at any level of competition.

I will re-iterate. Watch out with the Creatine. I was "trying" it a long way back post ride/pre ride can't remember?? But it really did a number on my stomache. For years I would have a horrible time getting my body to uptake anything nutritional during/after a race - whether fluid or solid. I remember doing my first KVSP race then drinking a bottle and being in so much pain it was unreal.

This. I did p-90x for a while before I got more serious about bike racing. Just dont have the time to do both anymore. But it worked great and while I was a much slower cyclist at that time, I was in much better shape for skiing, motocross, etc.

Jake...silly question.... you are training for a 25+ miles SS race.....how many times have you actually ridden your SS in 2013?
