South Mountain Reservation

I don't mind if they take some land, especially in that area. What is frustrating to all of us is the pace that this new project moves while the MTB community is forced to wait for access after doing TM. That is BS.

I'm with Bob. We rode there before they enforced that old law forbidding MTBs. You'll be old and bald before you get the chance to ride their legally again.

I would ride there illegally with cowbells on my bars and balls on my seat if my wife would not make me sell my bike to pay the fine.

I do have a problem with where they are building. The point is that they don't want us to "destroy" an 18" ribbon of forest (which is already cut by the way), yet they will pave over an entire field. That area does get quite a bit of use. It is the only open field in the area that is not overrun by kids in uniforms during soccer season. They may only take a small section now, but there is no way they will stop at 300 parking spaces if the mini-golf and restaurant is a success. Also the zoo is becoming much more popular. There are times where that lot is completely full. Trust me, they will end up using much more land than what is currently planned.

what is the fine btw?

and i totally agree M-E. if they can chip away at the outer edge of the park, and it doesn't raise too many eyebrows, it just sets a precident to be able to take more land when they feel the need to.

next thing you know, they'll argue a strip mall would be good right next door to put in shops and increase tax revenues.

I see no problem claiming natural land to enclose animals in cages instead.

Follow up emails

I've sent several emails to Joe D (joedi@admin.essexcountynj.org) regarding the SOMO issues and the new monument to him. Each time it's get longer and I update the subject line....

No reply yet. However, the county did reply to an email (the same email address) about tree planting on the county road I live on....we'll see if that happens.

Sorry, but I just feel the need to dump on Joe D. today. In case you have not been on his website, there is a link to a description of the Environmental Center in Roseland that was recently re-dedicated. The history boasts about "1,360 acres of wetlands preserve which remains almost entirely undeveloped" except, of course, for the brand spanking new building that he put on the property in 2005!

OK, I'm done for today...

I got my info, but there isn't further detail, I'll post it up when I get back to the office in a bit

I was over on MTBR in the Pennsy fourm. One of their county parks was being closed and a gas company was coming i to drill. The Sierra Club found a loophole that looks like the drilling will have to stop.

I'd rather have them close south mountain than have the sierra club help me with anything. I hate those people more than anything in the world. They killed the astronauts! And countless other people.

Anyway, it's defiantly the bikers that cause the erosion problems with our huge hooves.
Today, in the forbidden zone.

If we just listened to your advice none of us would have this problem.
That would be perfect!

Except it's in Essex county, where fun is illegal and frowned upon.

Now go back in the mall and spend money, what are you doing outside in the first place?

Well Norm,
The South moutain area had a few spots back in the 1960's where there were large caged in areas you could feed the deer.
I used to go as a kid with my mom, you would buy some cracker jack at the local snack stands that were there provided by the park. Lot a fun.
Thats right, im old, and those really were the good old days.
So, now all you do is argue about if and when we will be able to ride, its never gonna happen, just ride, life is really short.
I buried both my parents in the last 18 months.
My mom, just last month. So really now...

Well the info I got really doesn't help much. But it seems there was 1 bidder, so they must have won the bid.
The bid was actually yesterday at 11am
