"Official" BIYF 2016-2017 thread

My first ride of the year. The average speed is crappy because I had to stop and help a fellow cyclist on the Middlesex Greenway who had a busted chain with absolutely no tools, not even a pump. This was only his second ride on a pretty decent Trek with Ultegra components. After fixing his chain I realized why he had chain issues on a brand new bike, he was in the small chain ring up front and also at the rear. The stress of the cross gearing and the chain constantly rubbing up against the big chain ring probably stressed the chain to the point of snapping one of the links open and that's exactly what the busted link looked like. So after I fixed his chain I gave him a quick rule of thumb on shifting and gear selection. He was impressed and surprised that I not only had all the tools needed but also both sizes of master links. I said both sizes because when I asked him how many speeds he's got in the rear cassette he said 10. So I busted out the appropriate master link and before I tried to fix the chain something told me to check and be sure and sure enough it was an 11-speed cassette. So I got an 11-speed link. I had to explain that I'm mostly a mountain biker and I have both 10 and 11 speed bikes which is why I carry both size links. The guy was floored at the amount of equipment I had in my hydro pack. He wanted to give me $20 for the link and my troubles and I would have none of it. Good Karma points are worth a lot more. Anyway, here's my ride and a picture of a building at Roosevelt Park that I always loved. 2:33 and 29.25 miles.

Best post in the thread.

My parents live less than a block from the Middleway Greensex, so I have ridden it a couple of times. The Lehigh Valley RR and adjacent public land were our playground decades ago.

That building was Roosevelt Hospital, built during the Depression. Used to sled that hill down to the lake until a kid went headfirst into a baseball bench stanchion, fatally and the county shut it down.
