3/4 - NICA Practice Day at Mercer

1:52:22 - COLD... Many kids showed up surprisingly despite the below freezing temp. Robin lead practice as Ben was in Arkansas teach'n IMBA skills, Gozick and Fred were there as well. I arrived an hour early to check conditions and familiarize myself with the NICA race course. We had a couple parents request to preview the course so that was the goal for today's practice. I rolled around and conditions were primo. I got back to the car and the team assembled and we're quickly in to the woods with 20+ rider train. The goal was to keep the kids moving to stay warm. After the first lap, one of our more spirited racers requested we split the group and have a fast group to do a faster lap. Everyone seemed to be on board as I yelled out - "Who wants to have their legs ripped off?" Followed by all the kids screaming and cheering - "MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....." LOL... We did another lap of the course and a couple other segments. Overall, practice was a great time. As I drove home, I couldn't help think about how happy those kids and fathers were during the ride. What a great experience. I can't wait for when I'm out there with my kids.

Speaking of my kids, now that my youngest is advancing his two wheeled skills, we stopped by Second life bikes to check out the roller races and pick up a geared 20" for little man so he can keep up with his older brothers in the woods.

Family details almost killed this ride before it started. First time riding over the NJTP on Old Post; there is a separate bridge all caged/fenced in for the sidewalk, dangling next to the road bridge, kinda cool. That and the fact I even got out were the highlights of this ride.

I finally had a couple hours to complete the repair on the Green Monster from the ol' stick in the derailleur trick I played back in January. New shifter, hanger, RD, and chain. Busted free the front Maxle too, which had seized to the hub bearings. Quick shakedown before dinner, thumbs up, was pretty chilly. Went back out after the kids went down to see wassup, not much.

13degrees in Edison when I left my house, and the trails were at least that cold. Bright sun doing its thing as Hubert and I ran thru the bizness from Rt27. Rolled thru Canal Rd lot about 0915, which was a bit early for @thegock , so worlds did not collide. As we came back thru towards Rt27, the sun was producing trail grease at a fast clip. Said goodbye to Mikey and ran back out some of the old farm trail and powerline/pipeline access roads where it was still a lil shady/frozen, then to Wawa, for some extra goodness.

So was 10am. Foursome was rolling 10:28am. After eight miles, we had seen only the one large mud puddle on Red. Then I got dropped and spent five miles chasing very unsuccessfully. The last mile and a half, everything on Blue melted at once and it was somewhat less fun.

The three guys in the lead group were at the edge of Six Mile Run, when I caught up for the second time on the way back. They had seen a full grown male mink. If you were DFL, you didn't see it.

No pictures due to the unsuccessful chase, however, I have a picture of the world's smallest photographic tripod:

3/5/2017: @Kaleidopete updates his blog: "Ramblings from Moe Mountain" routinely with photos and that gives me a great sense of conditions at Wawayanda State Park. So, I could see it was ready and calling to me to come ride. I took some of those unmarked trails east of "Banker". I found a turn I had never taken before, but then it just ended at a stream. Didn't see a clear crossing or trail on the other side so I just back-tracked. These trails are kind of classic, rugged Waway. Even though there were several cars in the Ferber circle, I didn't encounter a soul.

Wish this came out better. The iron in the water is so strong, the water is orange.

Double Pond. Probably one of the most photographed spots in the park.

@huffster
I see that ride you did in my neighborhood, That trail you had to ride back out of is called The Ridge. I only found it last month.
Such a great trail that goes nowhere.
The other one that leads back to Banker is Sandpit Trail, built by a friend of mine that lives in my neighborhood.
He also built the Ridge trail and the new double log bridge that you ride in on from Banker.

I thought only PA had orange water!

Rode Sat, very windy and cold. Rode to 2nd life bikes after some other stuff. 90 mins. Went to 2nd life bikes. Got a nos fork to match my 90's purple rockhopper. Pretty stoked. So no more 3.5 lb mag 21 boar anchor.

The ride home down belmar blvd felt like I was riding into a brick wall. Went to 2nd life bikes. Got a nos fork to match my 90's purple rockhopper. Pretty stoked. So no more 3.5 lb mag 21 boar anchor.

3 segments.

So I've been using maps that were well over 20 years old and decided to upgrade. These updated maps had some new trails a stones throw away from my house, so I decided to check them out. Lots of hike a bike however, but some amazing views....

Plus Jorba member bonus....
