i almost forgot the frightening part of the ride yesterday. i'm not sure what trail we were on...nasty, rocky downhill that dumps you out at a couple of stream crossings. anyway, i start hearing this horrible rattling and have no idea what it is. i just know something is VERY wrong and i should try to slow down and check it out. finally i get enough control over the bike to get to the side of the trail. i look down and what do i see? well, my purty new blue salsa QR on the front is just hanging open. the front wheel was just about to come off! 😱

i have no idea how it happened but i cannot imagine going OTB on that trail. very scary. that thing is clamped nice and tight now.

Seems like our legislators aren't that much off-base then 😀

Did the lawyer tabs play their role then?

Maurice

I did a wheelie and my front wheel fell off once. Fortunately I wasn't going too quickly - it must've looked good to bystanders though!

funny thing is, i've NEVER had anything other than the stock skewers (or much else aftermarket for that matter) so i thought this was a good upgrade. i really hope that doesn't happen again. i dig the blue.

uh, i had the same problem, same skewer, on stone gate after i peeled off from you guys.

i had a salsa front sit in the fork ends loosely on me for nearly an entire very technical ride without it falling off. it was entirely my fault. lube the clamping mechanism, because sometimes the collar doesn't line up right with the arm, and if its sideways or crooked when you clamp it, it could slip into place during the ride and end up loose.

luckily you guys had those secondary retension mechanisms, right? right?😀

well i had to trim them down since per the instructions, they need to be if they extend more than 2mm from the end of the non-clamp side. hack saw, dremel, done. now they're nice a tight...it was probably my fault as well though. just scary since i've never had that happen to me.

back in the...um...saddle?

i suppose i should start at the begining. monday i got my haircut @ this place in the roxbury mall... 😀 i also pulled in an almost five mile run. dropping all the weight over the last eight months has made running, dare i say, almost enjoyable. never thought i'd be saying that.

but i digress...i got back on the road bike for a quick roll today. first time i've been on the road bike in...um...a couple weeks at least. it's great for putting in time and miles but man oh man. riding the rocks on the mary is FAR more fun. tons. i can't help it. sure, hills are...hills but sheesh. anyway, i managed to keep my mph at 17.4 which is pretty good all things being equal. i'm surprised that i can still push that speed having not been on that bike in so long but i guess all the running i've been doing is actually helping. viva la cross training!

anyway, here's the data.

MD, group rides and OTB

i think i now know how fred feels. i crashed not once...not twice...but FOUR TIMES yesterday. granted three of them were at the end of the ride when i was completely shot but still. four freakin' times? the second to last one was on the climb heading up to three bump or three rock or some damn thing. about two miles in. just plugging along and wham. that one actually hurt. i just laid on the ground like a police sketch as everyone behind me rode by. riding a rigid SS on wicked techy stuff really takes a toll on your body. i've said it before and i'll say it again: sean is a freakin' animal to be able to ride the miles and the places he does on that KM of his. simply insane.

anyway, the am started out with myself, norm and scott, mr. ytc100 himself. did the stone gate to the wicked techy white trail (i went OTB in literally the only place on that trail w/o a rock) followed by a casual hike UP the wall then back around to the lot for lap two.

lap two, which was proceeded by norm first doing laps around the saffin's pond parking lot at mach 7 then bombing the fire road towards stone gate, added shaggz, stan lee, woody, sparta brad and south central killa walter. this is where my details get somewhat sketchy as i bailed right before heading over to cascade...only to go home, put my girls to sleep and slave away in my backyard until 3:00. needless to say, this morning i feel like i got beat with a sock full of ivory bars.

it was great to see all you folks yesterday and hopefully we'll keep this weekend thing up since it's been pretty fun. i doubt i'll be on ms mary for the next ride as she needs some attention. i know folks are skeptical about the rim durability but @ 200 lbs...now...this is the first issue i've had with the rims and i've got a pretty fair amount of miles on that bike.

and now for the star of our show, the data:

i was fine the first half of the ride with the exception of the OTB on the white trail which was due to me drifting a bit and hitting a soft patch and digging the front wheel causing the aforementioned OTB.

the other three were after the norm/scott leg with you guys. i was just shot i guess. the one that really hurt was the climb when i endo'd, didn't go all the way over and fell solidly sideways. i couldn't get un-clipped so it was ugly.

net-net: i'm still a rock star. just a tired one. 😀

btw - the september mountain bike action reviewed the mary XC, i just skimmed it, but it looks like rave reviews.

Yeah they liked it a lot, surprising since they general poo-poo 29ers. But the absolutely LOVE the Exiwolves in that article too which makes me question their sanity.

they loved the Exi's? wow. if they were riding slickrock in moab they get a pass otherwise that entire magazine is even more suspect. those were hands down the WORST tire i have ever used.
