Music is so subjective. A few nights ago I posted up a clip from Neon Trees that Sandie thought was weak and Norm thinks the lead singer is to big for his britches. I really liked that version of Animal but like I said music is subjective.
The one thing that bands need to be these days is compelling to watch, because we don’t just listen to music but are entertained by the performance. The lead singer for Neon Trees, Tyler Glenn, is animated. When you watch him you form an opinion of him, good or bad, but at least you have an opinion of him. What’s worse is watching someone perform that your indifferent about, they are the forgettable ones.
Like these guys for example, this song is big right now but they have zero personality or stage presence.
Twinkie Tuesday
This singer songwriter is a personal favorite of mine. He caught my ear about 12 years ago with a breakthrough hit they began playing on 105.5 WDHA, called Faded. Ben Harper has put out a number of albums since then with a couple songs getting airplay on radio stations. I simply think this guy puts out good stuff consistently, without sounding monotonous.
Here is
Ben with a previous Twinkie performer playing live.
Before I play this next clip I need to state for the record I do not believe in legalizing it. If everyone where as cool as Ben Harper I wouldn’t have a problem with folks
burning one down, but as we all know the world is full of stupid people.
