Music

I've been liking Mumford and Sons a lot lately. Dl'd their album a while back but recently find myself defaulting to them a lot.

I'm also really enjoying Cee Lo Green (lyrics probably NSFW). This is a bit different than his work in Gnarls Barkley but I dig it.

Music is so subjective. A few nights ago I posted up a clip from Neon Trees that Sandie thought was weak and Norm thinks the lead singer is to big for his britches. I really liked that version of Animal but like I said music is subjective.
The one thing that bands need to be these days is compelling to watch, because we don’t just listen to music but are entertained by the performance. The lead singer for Neon Trees, Tyler Glenn, is animated. When you watch him you form an opinion of him, good or bad, but at least you have an opinion of him. What’s worse is watching someone perform that your indifferent about, they are the forgettable ones. Like these guys for example, this song is big right now but they have zero personality or stage presence.

Twinkie Tuesday

This singer songwriter is a personal favorite of mine. He caught my ear about 12 years ago with a breakthrough hit they began playing on 105.5 WDHA, called Faded. Ben Harper has put out a number of albums since then with a couple songs getting airplay on radio stations. I simply think this guy puts out good stuff consistently, without sounding monotonous.

Here is Ben with a previous Twinkie performer playing live.

Before I play this next clip I need to state for the record I do not believe in legalizing it. If everyone where as cool as Ben Harper I wouldn’t have a problem with folks burning one down, but as we all know the world is full of stupid people.

Bill mentioned Mumford & Sons the other day, these guys are making some big headway with their debut album Sigh no More. They are up for a couple grammy awards Best New Artist and Rock Song of the Year.(Little Lion Man)
Just to put things in perspective Mili Vanilli won best new artist in 1990🙄
Despite this I still like this band, I'll get something out by them soon.

Music That Needs to be Heard
I think these guys are a boy band...they look like boys. But it is a fun sound, that you can't deny. Vampire Weekend already sold out to a TV commercial, Toyota ruined that song Holiday...or VW ruined it for selling there shit. Oh well I'll play this song hopefully they won't be a punk and sell it too.

JimmyJimmyJimmy...that's the problem with you MIT guys, you can program computers but you can't tie your shoes. That chick is the cover of Vampire's new Album...yeah I still say album.

I don't like music videos, they do nothing for me. They are usually some slick presentation of what a producer thinks the image of the band should be. But tonight I am going to play a music video because when it comes to electronica and house beats live performances never match the studio version. + there are some hot chicks in this vid.
With all this snow I hope you get a chance to enjoy the pow pow.

I was looking for my notebook detailing the calculation of the orbit of an asteroid ( i think it was called melpomene 9 ) that I did in my Junior year of high school for "fun", but I cannot seem to locate it. It literally takes up a whole composition notebook of all physics and mathematic calculations and the end result is just 1 number .. something like 3.14159265. It was kind of anti-climactic actually. I did find the plates I took of the asteroid though. Unfortunately, over time my brain has reverted back to that of a 2nd grader.

Electronica is something I can talk about. Here is a classic:

The other day I said I don't like music videos. Well I still don't but this video really does go well with this song or this song goes well with the vid.

I think this song is fitting for the night, it is just a happy party song.
Party on

knowing my taste in music, friends have been telling me for years to listen to Ray LaMontagne.

wow. were they right!! upon the first listen, this song has become one of my favorite songs. I've listened to this song 50 times over the last few days.

the tone of the song. the soul in his voice. the lyrics are so direct and to the point. just a great song...

Jammed with these guys years ago when they played some little bar in Bradley Beach. They're from Texas and saw them when I was playing SXSW in Austin. These guys tore the roof off the place. They look like dirty farmers drinking, smoking and falling all over the stage and it's no act! I've never seen such energy in a room before. Was like a drunken hillbilly orgy. Check out their record "Dems Good Beeble" whatever that means.

As I'm reading this post, prior to reaching the record title, Im thinking...."this description reminds me of The Gourds". I saw them play two years ago at the Mercury lounge and it was just as you described it. 😀

Is there a specific album you guys would suggest from these guys? Something nice and upbeat perhaps?

Man...where did the time go. I had 2 weeks off from work, well I had to go in one day but other than that I had a lot of time off. There where so many things I wanted to get done around the house but I only did about half of them...but thats usually the case.

Music That Needs to be Heard
Sandie posted a clip of this guy awhile back, he reminds me of Ryan Adams...not to be confused with Bryan Adams.
He has some help here from Dar, this duo makes the magic happen. Its a good way to mellow out and get ready for a new year of work.

Cool clip Mark, I love the sound of that guitar. I don't think anyone here is a cat 1 musician...you sounded great!

On tap tonight is someone who strikes me as timeless. This guy never seems to age and his music never sounds old. The artist I am talking about is Beck of course.
