going to pitch getting a 911 as a second car
having driven Hondas & Acuras most of my life, I'd like to have something fun for the weekends
kids will be gone soon and approaching mid-life crisis...

I know the stigma of the 996 gen, but are the only era I think I could get away with at the moment. Are these really as bad as they say? Don't think the 993s will be attainable anymore, should I just wait longer for the 997s to drop in price? My pitch will be to sell off my "stuff" to fund most of the car, so its not going to be an impulse buy like a bike, cause I've got lots of stuff.

not looking for suggestions on alternatives or comments like get a vette or muscle car
lots here seem to know about cars, so appreciate the knowledge share

Some of the 996's had issues with cylinder scoring. I have a relative in the biz who works for the largest Porsche dealer and tuner in the country. You really want a certified car also, though they will be expensive. You will be waiting a while for prices to drop (depending on your range). My opinion, the Cayman is the way to go. It may not be as fast as a 911, but it handles better. Go to a dealer and drive both back to back (this is much easier to do than you think, I just walked in off of the street and did it). Drive the Cayman first, then the 911 on the same road. You will definitely see and feel the difference.

I think my head just exploded with a monsoon of smart-ass midlife crisis jibes. 😀

Using “the Wife gets a new handbag, you get another bike” rule you already established.... I shutter at the quid-pro-quo. 😱

I was reading an article about speculation with the 996 a while back. It went into the whole issue with the IMS bearing failure and how it was early models and pretty uncommon. But I had thought with the 996 that the values would just rise for the same kind of reasons that the 914 would...Or say my 67 GT mustang vs a 67 shelby....The good ones become too expensive, so us non rich people want something we can afford. However, that does not seem to be the case with the 996. There were many of them built, they dont rust out and fall apart like the older Porsche's did...they are not particularly desirable compared to any other 911 model for 100 reasons....unless its a turbo or a Gt-3

I thought she was getting a Maserati...

The other problem with all of the older water cooled 911’s is the existence of the Cayman. Why would you buy an older, water-cooled 911 when you can get a late model Cayman that’s faster and handles better?

the 996 probably isn't a bad buy. nobody likes them because the older ones are way more raw and the newer ones are way faster. plus they are ugly and look like a chick car.

if you can swing a 996TT, you can avoid any fear of whether or not the car will have an IMS bearing issue. The TT did not use the same bearing as the NA. Ive always liked the 996, never understood the hate for them.

but one of the main things to focus on while shopping is whether or not the IMS was taken care of

there were a million variants of the 996 as well, the base model carrera will be the cheapest, but if you wanted AWD, there is that option (bonus the 996TT is AWD standard) the C4S seemed to be a really popular car when it was released. it had the simplicity of a NA engine, but added the widebody and AWD. It could also be had in a cabriolet model.

certain special edition 996s will probably hold their value better and be higher priced, like the 40th anniversary 911 and any GT3 model

the 996 is still too new. I dont think they have hit bottom yet. the 944 is JUST starting to increase in value. Boxsters are still going down as well.

and only SOME 914s are going up. i dont think my car is riding the coat tails very well...but i havent tried selling it so who knows

The first gen Cayman is also ugly, but Porsche fixed that by making it look like an mini-911.

my wife's friend in Shanghai has the GTS, that's a really great looking car, just not in my price range

also I'm leaning towards a soft top or targa

that's an interesting assumption, is there a place where they track the price of used Porsches?
I think there's so many used Boxsters out there flooding the market, not many are willing to spend the big money to maintain a $10K car
