help from Porsche enthusiasts

I would do a CPO Cayman S or GTS myself. One of the last flat sixes with PASM and sport exhaust. They will remain desirable.

if you can swing a 996TT, you can avoid any fear of whether or not the car will have an IMS bearing issue. The TT did not use the same bearing as the NA. Ive always liked the 996, never understood the hate for them.

but one of the main things to focus on while shopping is whether or not the IMS was taken care of
my wife's friend in Shanghai has the GTS, that's a really great looking car, just not in my price range

also I'm leaning towards a soft top or targa

that's an interesting assumption, is there a place where they track the price of used Porsches?
I think there's so many used Boxsters out there flooding the market, not many are willing to spend the big money to maintain a $10K car

Ive been a porsche nut since high school. Havent been in a position to afford anything too nice but i have a regular habit of window shopping. Ive had 2 non running 914's, a 924S and currently have a decent 914 2.0

Go Air Cooled or a GT3.

can't afford either, I started looking at 930s but they seem to headaches to maintain
Trying to be realistic with kids going off to school soon and quite frankly don't see spending more than $30K on what will essentially be a weekend toy
but don't want to settle with a '18 Miata or something like that

Here's Magnus Walker giving it the thumbs up.

After owning my RS America for ~20 years & many track miles, I sold it to Joe Rogan. It's in good hand out at Sharkwerks.

Find any good air cooled 911 in good shape that fits you budget. Last air cooled 911 were 993's. I loved my RS America which is a 964 last year was 1994, then came the 993's. Early 996's had problems. Air cooled 911 are very hot now and super fun.

porche- overrated- always need maintenance
dont get a jeep- jeeps are a fad
Get something that will turn heads, something that you can take the Mrs LabRat out in that will remind her of when you first started dating...
A good 911 (non-Turbo) Well-maintained is indestructible.

A friend of mine picked up an '01 996 for 14k. Kept it for a couple years and sold it for about the same. Then he bought a Maserati (another car that has gotten cheap). I thought 996 was cooler.
I think you need to find a private owner that babied the car. I've seen quite a few OCD sports car owners that didn't spare expenses and did most of the heavy lifting maintenance wise.
I'm thinking about getting a muscle car now that I have a garage. I've always wanted a 60's 4 speed v8 car and want to rid myself of the bug. Figure holding onto it for a couple years then selling won't cost me much

I see a lot of people talk for years about getting whatever car or motorcycle and never doing it. Sometimes you need to bite the bullet and get it out of your system.

996 is such a depressing car. The interior is bland as can be. If i'm going to spend a good amount of money on a car the interior has to make me feel something since that's where the driving experience begins. For me, i always said its 997 or nothing. Great interiors, great exterior styling, typically reliable and a hoot to drive. Cayman or newer 987 Boxter would be a great alternative.

996’s are still priced to high IMO. You decide to bight the bullet have the car dealer inspected and after you buy a car have the dealer do the clutch and while they are at it do the IMS bearing at the same time.
My advice is pick up a 2003-2004 Z06 corvette.......405 hp and race ready suspension.

Older Porsches: 911 slantnose widebody or go home.

Newer Porsche: 911 GT2 or Panamera S or go home.

Bought a 987.2 Cayman (2009) a couple of months back. No IMS/RMS with that generation engine, handles incredibly well, and is a much better looking car than the first gen.
