H2H Race #4 - Bulldog Rump KVSP

Good News: That was Tim Bumpus - one of us Bulldogs - he is doing well with 8 stitches in his chin and thankfully nothing further. He is in good spirits and was at work today. Thanks for inquiring about him. He's a tough dood.

ah shit. Nice. Somebody said the guy in the yellow jersey.. which I assume was another guy in a Yellow jersey... who eventually went on to win the race.

I think...??..

I hope to see you at the next race. Introduce yourself.

And your not kidding about the MASS. I took 18 of 23 at fairhill Cat 1

Yeah, that guy was fast and was off the front pretty quick, no idea who he was. Looking at the results he is from VT. I'll be up for Ringwood providing there aren't any cross races that interfere with it...

Ringwood was on the news tonight, they want to get the entire town tested for lead and other carcinogens. Thanks Ford!

Glad he is okay. That had to hurt like hell.

Thanks everyone for coming out to our race yesterday. It was a great day and worked registration with a couple sweet pups which made it fun. Couldn't race due to injury but glad everyone had a good time.

Interesting, it looks like the Leaf Blower is going to be at Waway?

sweet! ringwood doesnt lay out well for a race.

Glad to hear Tim is doin well I saw the ambulance leave never a good sight.

Thx Mtn rider ive been working hard since tymor. Finally have things going in the right direction i think.

My race recap 40-45 cat2

Got to park early knowing i really needed a proper warmup. Meet up with percy on his singlespeed.Do the last half of the course with the bigger climbs. after warmup im feeling pretty well. top of fluids take a cliff bar head down to the line. Decide to start front row for a change. Im not a fast starter and never wanted to get swallowed up by the pack.
So we get the countdown 5 4 3 2 1 but no horn. half the pack leave ,a few stay back a sec.
Sprinting to the single track I settle in about 8th or so not bad for me. Alex passes me on first lil road climb after single track. we talk briefly and away he goes. About 2 miles later I see Kosa picking his bike up on side of trail.
Just trying to recover and settle into a nice pace at this point. Start catching some the class before us at the worse possible time on some tight single track. manage to get thru that.
Knowing I lost some time there I try to gain some ground. Kosa and another rider get around me about halfway on first lap. and tuck in behind kosa and ride his wheel for a few miles until the 3 climbs on the last part of the course. last climb I stand up and go by Kosa. Try to recover a bit up on ridge then see alex again about mile from finish of 1st lap. Go around him at this point finish off 1st lap riding Ricks wheel from town cycle.

Start of 2nd lap I make a weak attempt to pass him before the singletrack starts. he passes me right back about 50 yards in..lol all well.

Take a horrible line up one of the smaller hills and have to dismount and run up. I look back and see alex right behind me. We pair up again and catch and pass Rick at some point,,, dont remember where. Alex pulls a fairly large gap on me at this point. Far enough where i dont see him anymore. come up to last big climb and see him cramping about 20 yards from the crest. urgghh he was so close.

Give it all i had left to finish.. at this point, dont want to get caught into a sprint to the end.

5th overall my personal best in a cat2 race .

Thank you for having us. This particular event is very well organized. I'm big fan of the calf markings. In fact, I like my calf marking so much that I never washed it off.

I got to mark up a lot of smooth legs for the cat 1's. lol. Yeah, it does help when racing.

... I'm racing Cat 1 in the MASS Series this year (and doing terrible), but because MASS Races are not USA Cycling sanctioned I do not have a Cat 1 license. I decided a few weeks ago to get a USA Cycling license, I hadn't had one in 3 years, and try to get a Cat 1 upgrade by racing a few races in NJ and VA. This has proven to be more difficult then I thought. I came in 3rd at Lewis Morris (you destroyed me there) and managed a nice big DNF yesterday due to a blown out tire, last race I do on Ignitor EXOs! ...

I have a friend who ran into this same issue at Lewis Morris. He kills it in the MASS series Cat 1 for 40-49 and hangs with the elites when he opts to run that group. He went to LMC to earn points to race Cat 1 at Greenbriar, but crashed out while he had the lead. This guy is as straight-up monster -- he's won the MASS series as a singlespeeder in the past and has been on the podium for almost every race he's done this year in Cat 1. There's no sandbagging about it -- he'd happily have lined up for Cat 1 if they'd have let him. It's tough for the guys who are having really good seasons legitimately in that class because they could have their best race ever and not get the result because another racer is forced to downgrade their true skill level, but I think its just as tough on most of the guys who are forced to race the lower category as well. I think most of us want to ride against the best because that makes us ride better than we otherwise would (case in point -- JShort here crashes twice and finishes top four? That's an awesome result! But would you have had ridden that hard if you didn't have that rabbit in front of you? He may have beaten you in this race, but you probably beat the time you would have had if he hadn't been there.) Personally, when I started doing enduros a few years ago, the biggest adjustment I had to make was getting used to the fact that I was now racing an open field against guys who, under regular classes, would be cat 1's or even elites. And now doing it on singlespeed and rapidly advancing age has me falling off the back more often than I ever used to. But I still love racing these guys -- I learn something about this kind of racing every time I do it.

Anyway, nice job to all -- I haven't been to KVSP in years but I remember it as a course with a bunch of short technical steeps. ON aday as hot as last Sunday, that cold be a tough ride! NIce work!

Have these guys actually put in for upgrades based on non-USAC results? The upgrade process is not nearly as Draconian as the road process, and if you explain that you race competitively in a series with other cat 1 riders, and want to buy a USAC license, it may very well be all you need to get the upgrade.

True. Upgrading in CX and road is a chore; MTB is a snap.
