Going Long and Hard.

I very rarely map out road loops...havent had to since the century I did last year. But I use this http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/

I use google maps. Enter in the addresses and drag the map around as needed. The use the conversion feature which converts the google map directly to gpx. Pretty sure luke told me about it a while back...there might be something better now.

Utah, how do you get it into the Garmin after you get the link? I tried just dragging it in but it doesn't show up.

Once you have the gpx file, on the 800 I think its the "courses" folder? I wish I had it right in front of me at this moment. But I just copy and paste it into the folder. Then it should show up in when you search courses.

Or, upload/convert the gpx file directly to a course file if its giving you trouble

the only thing i see jim is that your route takes you northbound on route 23 south, i wouldnt recommend riding on route 23 at all right there

You are literally going right past my house, like a 1/2 mile. Maybe ill try to link up with you for a while if I can swing it. That spot on 23 isnt bad. When Green pond ends at 23, there is no light there. So you will either have to make a right and go about a 1/4mi to the light/jug handle. Or ride on the shoulder against traffic for a couple hundred yards and cut over. I have done it many times, its not that bad. 23 has a pretty big shoulder.

When you cross over into NY on day one the riding is going to blow your mind.😀 That's the roads I'm on all the time. VTC country!! After you pass through Amity you'll be about 4-5 miles from VTC WHQ. Have fun! I love getting in those amazing rides. Go for it!

Jim - I use Garmin Road Trip on my Mac to create routes and it uploads directly. Works pretty well, but you need to do your entire route in one sitting. E.g. I created a route, had to do something and closed GRT, and came back to "add" to the route and I couldn't. Otherwise, it's very good. You can edit an existing route e.g. - you want to avoid Rt 23, you can drag the course elsewhere with ease (little hand tool). Give it a go; free download from Garmin and works with non-Garmin maps.

How do you feel about riding on Route 23 for a long stretch? When I get a bit stronger, I'm gonna try this ride:

It looks like the problem area on 23 is between Stockholm and Kinnelon. Once you get in Kinnelon, you can take the local roads. I found 2 points of bypass except for a short 2 mile stretch in Newfoundland (see link above), but it adds a bunch of elevation going through Oak Ridge.

On one hand, I think my track is the safest, but on the other hand, I don't think route 23 going all the way from Stockholm to Newfoundland (Echo Lake Road) is too bad? Seems mostly flat between those 2 points.

I have only ridden 23N from Greenpond road to Rt 515....then from the center of sussex (rt 565) to the monument. On those sections, I had no issues. Shoulder is massive and I felt pretty safe. But south of green pond, eh. There are the S turns in there and I would avoid the section from Kinnelon road, up to green pond. But I have never actually ridden it.

23 from Franklin to Stockholm is NOT bike friendly. The Beaver Lake hill is 2 lanes, no shoulder and very twisty. Head down to Ogdensburg and take Edison road. Your other section of 23 from Oakridge road to Echo Lake road is also sketchy. There is a full shoulder, but traffic moves at 60+ mph.

Liong has done the entire stretch of rte 23(and worse roads) more than a few times, but he's crazy.😉 I would suggest 513 as a scenic reroute.

I've had this ride on my to do list for a few years but the 'Longest Day' planets have not aligned in my world. Dragging your entire family on for the ride is great to do at least once. If they(the kids) appreciate it half as much as mine did when I rode solo from Wayne to LBI the summer before last, they are on an adventure that they'll remember forever. Your wife, if she's anything like my husband, will tolerate it because the kids will have so much fun.

Wish I could join you.

Other than a short stretch, I will be avoiding Kinnelon to Green Pond since I can re-route by taking Echo Lake.

Thanks for the heads up on Franklin to Stockholm.

I've driven Oakridge Rd to Echo Lake Rd, so yea I know cars go pretty fast there .. but thinking I can manage for 2 miles with a big shoulder. My other option is to head up Clinton Rd to Van Orden Rd to 513 to Gould Rd. Which isn't horribly out of the way, but would be a bunch to add towards the end of the ride.

(Un)fortunately, I do not yet have kids .. nor a wife 😀

Sweet. I'm not that worried about sections that may have traffic. I'm fairly certain I get passed by more cars during my 17 mile commute in the morning than I will during this entire ride😀

I cross 287, 22, 28, 78, Stelton Road, and Plainfield Ave, it's by far worse than anything else out there😉

I'll only be on a very short section of 23, and most of it is the TT course, so I know what I'm in for. The rest of it will be a nice adventure and I'll deal with whatever comes my way as it comes, it'll make for good reading...

Work. Was worky. Couple of quasi interesting things. I figured out a way to bleed the new Shimano brakes without the little yellow cup, that we of course lost somewhere. Stuck a bottle top in the hole and filled with fluid. Butter son. Butter.

The dudes from Pure Black stopped by again today. Apparently they set up camp in Jersey for the rest of the season so we'll be seeing them more regularly. I swapped some info with the guys to hook up for a ride and show them some routes, should be a ton of fun. PS-The dude that crashed in the last corner at the Philly race is OK.

HI NORM!! I saw Norm. He got mad the last time I didn't say I saw him. I saw him. I'm saying it. See?

My new pan came in today so I skipped the shop ride to put it in.

Me and Eric banged it pretty quick. All the old stuff was off so it was just a slap it on and done deal.

Changed the filter while I was there and filled her up with oil. Wouldn't start. Doh. Forgot to line up the cam when I put the top-end back together. Popped the timing belt off and pulled the plug in the tranny to set the timing. Wanted to kick over but still wouldn't. Double-checked the timing and wires etc, fine. No kick. Sounds strong, but nothing. Peeped the gas guage...EMPTY...Poop. The wife ran out to her cousin's for the evening so I'm stuck here. I'll fill the can in the am and try to get it kick over. Even just trying to kick over the car sounds a shit ton better. Fingers crossed.

I want in on those rides with the Pure Black squad son.

Funny thing bout your brake mod. I rode with Nuggles and Wayne today. I learned some good stuff bout bleeding brakes!

Hi Jim. See even my visits now are much more hit and run. No time for love, Dr. Jones.

Good job on those wheels. That was an Oprah-like makeover you did there. The recipient was pretty excited.

You really missed a photo op by not snagging Esnes in that kit he had on. Damn that was something else.
