Going Long and Hard.

I'm familiar with these fellows, I've worked on Jud's bike many times throughout the years. They're a special breed, I'm not that guy. This would be the racer-boy version of touring😀

Sadly enough, for the first time ever, Joe is sorta on the fence and may need a bit more convincing/prodding/straight up heckling...etc...He was more than ok with doing the Longest Day and then riding back the next day, it's only 100 miles more. Start giving him grief on FB!!😉

OK. Let's get the bike part out of the way. Ride. Commute to drop off the boys, then round trip to/from work, you know the deal. Legs are coming back around nicely. Tomorrow should be good to go. Still planning on riding easy the rest of the week in order to be fully healed for states, it's gonna be uber murder.

Work. The dudes from Pure Black Racing came into the shop today, including Mr. Tim Gudsel who just won Somerville!! I got to talk to them for a bit. Our young mechanic Eric works for Mavic as a neutral support guy and fixed one of their bikes during the race. They came in to see him, kinda cool. They'll be in town to do Basking Ridge thursday and then Philly over the weekend. They bought our entire stock of Gu products, apparently it was much warmer than they expected and they went through everything they brought with them. Nice.

The touring trip idea. Working it out. I'm (fairly) sure I've convinced my wife to take a mini-vacation and be quasi sag support, sorta. Take friday to ride up to High Point. Have my wife and boys meet me up there and we'll camp overnight. Stock a cooler with cycling food and bottles and HEED etc to refill the next morning. New kit, ditch the clothes, roll down the hill to Port Jervis for the start of the Longest Day ride, like way in the am. The wife and boys can play at High Point and pack up camp and head down to Cape May. I'd expect them to pass us en route at about the 1/2 way point. If something terrible happens, we'd have an out. Stay overnight in a hotel in Cape May. Eat, shower, fall asleep on the beach, who knows how that's gonna go. Last day, leave early again as to have my wife pass me at some point, hopefully 1/2 wayish. Again, another bailout plan. Could just be crazy enough to work.

Here's a route. Not the actual route, but a route nonetheless, just to get an idea of the epicness this epic advanture would be. So far no one is interested in joining. Maybe I can get people to ride for stages of the route:hmmm:

Holy crap, I didn't realize Cape May was all the way down there. I can possibly join you on the 11th when you pass by the route 80 corridor. Ride with you for 40-50 miles and turn back for a century of my own. Not sure if I can keep pace though .. although I would like to think so if you're riding 200 miles 😀

Your map link above is broken btw. I mean it doesn't show the actual semi-route.

Nice. I would imagine the average speed would be around 16mph, albeit it is completely flat so it could possibly be higher. I'm just going by what it's like doing a century around here, so who knows, but I highly doubt anyone would have an issue keeping up.

I just gotta go on the record and say this doesn't make sense. I mean, I get that you're doing it to do it. But you're not really going to have fun for a lot of this. And by the 3rd day, you'll be ready to kill someone.

I don't entirely disagree with the above. However, I need to do dumb things like this from time to time, and now seems like a good enough time. I believe I've built enough fail-safes into the system to at least have a fighting chance of having it all work out. There's also a pretty good chance that I spend day#3 laying on the beach in wildwood😀

On Day 4-7 you will not want to look at your bikes. On day 8 through the end of you life you will enjoy that you decided to do something most people think is insane and you had fun doing it. You create your own little adventure and see what happens. Makes you feel like a kid again. Nothing wrong with that.

After I did something like this, I had symptoms of post-traumatic stress syndrome for a few days. I did it a couple more times before I got it out of my system. Now, no one dares question my ability to HTFU.

As a coach, if you were training for upcoming MTB races and CX season on the horizon, this would frustrate the heck out of me. I'm not your coach so go have fun.

I understand you looking into all these safety net options with the vehicle support which I think is smart. However one scenario I just wanted to bring up in case you didn't think of it is how hard it will be to tow that VW van thing with your bike. Just sayin'

Hi. The bike. Normal commute, you know the deal-io.

Work. Was slammed. We have 2 guys on staff that are race mechanics so we lost both of them because of the Basking Ridge race. A couple of our part-timers didn't come in, also from the race, so it was retarded busy. Like retarded. Like saturday busy, but with 4 people working, insanity.

Let's go back to lunch. At the beginning of the week I just head over to the ShopRite and get enough poop for the week. I bought a bunch of those steamed veggie bag things and various Quorn product. My diet has been very good for at least a month now and my body seems to be used to taking in fewer calories. At least more times than not. Here's another version of this dish.

Good times, good times. There's a new toy. I broke down and got a Garmin 800. Decided during that High Point ride that cue sheets suck monkey balls. I loaded my commute into the 800 so I'll play with it to see how it works.

That is all for today. Pretty easy riding week so there's not much going on.

I'm going to guess the smile will be asymptotically close to negative infinity, but will rise directly, and eventually in a curvilinear fashion with the number of days post ride. This is without controlling for divorce potential.

Day #2, mile 50, the smile will be gone. 250 miles later, his teeth will be bleeding.

I once hiked 26+ miles on the AT in the same day. I look back on that and think, boy, that was fucking stupid.

Just sayin' 🙂

Jim, let us know what you think of that Garmin 800. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one for a while now, the price is the only thing that throws me off. I have a few mega rides of my own that I'd like to do but I dont like the idea of getting lost 75 miles from home. lol

very happy with my Gramin 800 . I found free calibrated maps of NJ in the internet .(I don't have the link handy -I will look for it latter ) bear in mind that on my longest ride I got low battery indication after ~7 hours . suggesting to turn off the back light on the longest day ride and but the contrast to the bare minimum .

Enjoy ! it is a great device !

800 is great. I leave the light on at all times in case I knock it off the bars it just gets easier to find 😉
