Glen Park Fall Sender Enduro 10/10/21

I realize people will be scared of covid and all, but would anyone in northern nj possibly have a fox proframe or similar in L or XL that I could borrow for tomorrow? 1% chance, but still a chance.

All I can say is that @Meatball Mia is fast.
This is a true statement.

Brief recap? Let’s do it.
Due to life and family stuff I didn’t get a chance to preride. I’ve ridden Glen a number of times but none this year and of course the stages are always new. But whatevs, it’s on. I’ve also been kinda down on my riding lately so confidence and expectations were low. By way of preride I jumped off the soccer field tie wall a few times Saturday night.

Wasn’t sure what time to leave (parking is limited) but when I passed Utah (the guy, not the state) on 80 I figured I’m good. Compared to my utter lack of preparation Utah has been aggressively plotting, scheming and practicing for this race. We noticed the road was dry towards PA and the radar looked promising so there was a chance for a dry race, which is nice.

Registered, got mildly chastised by the announcer for not pre riding (remind me to never raise my hand again) then did a little Maze warm up which didn’t help my nerves much. Made some gear changes and headed up with the boys.

The only stage of note was 3, where I chipped in too early and ran up on one of the U19 kids. They were in a pack so I figured they’d all be flying but, no. I told the kid it was my bad and to just ride and have fun instead of worrying about letting me past. I apologized at the bottom for crowding him and it was fine. The stages were vintage Glen, steep and loose with some flowy rock stuff mixed in.

Overall I felt pretty good and rode competently. I did stage 1 last, which is the rowdy jump line and it was really fun. Maybe if I’d started with that I’d have gotten stoked sooner but I didn’t feel ready for it in the morning. Met a bunch of new friends and ran into some familiar faces, kept it upright and had fun. Final result was 12th outta 23, not great but not embarrassing. I promise myself to actually prepare next time and see what happens.
Cheers!

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t get last place just because the kid before me forgot to time out for about a minute and a half. I rode past it as well and only lost about 15sec. In my opinion, the timing thing at the bottom of one stage was hideous. Right on a decline into mud.

There were many complaints about that one, which reminds me of something I wanted to mention.
The kids were awesome. In today’s IG and tic tok addicted world it was great to see them goofing off, joking around and cheering for their friends. Of course they’re also stupid fast and utterly fearless. Anyway I’d been making Dad jokes with the boys while waiting for that stage and they all hollered for me where the timer was when I hit the bottom. Good times!

Ya she crushed it today...

Good meeting you @mtn and @f.i.t.nj
Howd you guys make out?

I'm still waiting for my results 😕
Greasy off camber not my jam.

Crashed on stage 1 in upper flat section right before the road crossing. I just came into to it fast and tucked the front. Didn’t even notice it was soft there until I was down. (Not hurt at all, just lost time)

Also, didn’t find the run in to the rock garden on 5 to be as natural as the way I practiced it last week. I should’ve pre-rode it. But choose not to. Got off my line in the race and had to dab twice in the garden and after the last log.
That was sad and probably pretty funny to watch 🙂

Overall I rode too tight and didn’t take any risk after the crash on 1 that came outta no where. And, as my times show, a bit too conservative.

Came 28th. Even w/o my 2 mistakes and one chip out comedy of errors the best, I would have expected to do would have been about 20th or about a mid 17min total time. So I was no where near the pace.

Chip issue?
You could say that

as I was standing in line on stage 3 I just dropped my arm/wrist down to my hip and this cracked.....tried fixing it with tape but it was dead....So I rode down to the tent to let them know...They gave me a new chip so that I could finish the 2 stages I had left, however...since the chip was broken, the data was now only on the boxes out on the trees and they were going to get that yesterday, so no results until maybe today. So I only got the results for the 2 stages I did with the new chip...

Sorry man. That’s no fun

sounds like the same spot that @graveyardman67 lost it too....I only remember a few bad spots yesterday and they usually surprised the hell out of me.

I love how close the racing is at GP....well except for Mia 🙂

I really had a blast yesterday. Stage 1 caught me out a bit. I was trying not to push too hard but lost focus for a bit. They had the camera setup on one of the bro-line drops and the flash really surprised me. I landed and went off course briefly and then in my haste to gain time back I pushed a bit too hard into that fresh-cut trail. Slipped out and my bike spun around under me but my left cleat didn't come out. I was stuck in some awkward position with one foot in.... Finally unclipped and had to run back up to speed but the damage was done. I was a little off in stage 2 but I think that was just waiting so damn long and this one being the longest stage you see my lack of fitness. I was in the pain cave at the end of 2, barely pedaling on the last section, arms on fire, HR pinned.
Stage 5 I was starting to feel it. Eased in and ramped it up thru the steeps. I was sliding into the berms like those Insta videos. I blitzed the rock garden and had so much speed I nearly ate the tree at the exit where you needed to make the right. I was dancing on the edge finally.

I should really do these more often. A little training, some focussed skills practice, and attention to my gear would get me some seconds everywhere.
