Formula 1 - 2024

Wasn't most of Leclerc's issue that they put him into intermediate tires a few laps too early? By the time the actual rain came he'd probably destroyed those tires after running around in the dry, so he was slow during both periods.

I was definitely hoping that Lando or Oscar would pull out the win, but their strategy definitely did not pay off. Interesting that the commentary team was asking Zak Brown about whether or not he was worried about a Mercedes undercut at the last pit stop, which is exactly what happened, and then it definitely seemed like the wrong tire choice. I also don't understand the radio back and forth asking the driver about the tire option over and over. It seems like the team would make the selection and then ask the driver to confirm the choice.

Mercedes played it spot on, Ferrari fucked it all up.

Best race of the year so far, IMO. All of the things and the rain made all of those team decisions that much more critical.

Yep, both Charles and Checo gambled on the intermediate tires hoping the track was wetter and destroyed them but IMHO the problem started on Saturday for both of them with qualifying.

Yeah, the back and forth asking the drivers for tire choice was strange. Lando on new medium would have pushed Lewis bit further and would have at least finished 2nd instead of 3rd.

Yeah, rain made for interesting race. I was surprised with how much Max was struggling with medium and intermediate tires. I have never seen him let drivers by without a fight but both Lando and Oscar went past him with out any kind of defense.

Zak Brown should stop talking about how RedBull should run their operations and concentrate on his own team.

I think McLaren should hire me for tire strategy and i don't know shit. Flipping a coin could have given them better results. Oscar just seems to always get the worst of their mistakes.

Yep, Oscar got the worst strategy last year at Silverstone. If they continue to do that, McLaren are going to lose him to other teams when his contract is up at the end of 2026.

They need to make some good decisions and not just attempt to second guess what the other teams are doing and when. If they just want to follow along, at least follow what RBR does for Max. They usually get it right.

Congratulation to Oscar. I was talking to my kids that Oscar has a shot to win it if McLaren does not screw up his strategy.

That was the strategy call made by McLaren which made for the awkward situation at the end for the drivers. They should have pitted Oscar first.

For a change RedBull as a group had a bad day both drivers and strategy.

Looking forward to Belgium Spa race where Max is most likely going to have to take an engine penalty which means at least a 10 place grid drop.

Edit: changed one word to around in the first line so it makes more sense.

Max is proving he cant drive unless he's seconds ahead of everyone else.

The McLaren mess was just that a mess. The points would have more benefited Norris in the championship, but I can understand why wanting to bring Piastri up.

McLaren is on a winning trajectory, hopefully they can keep the bolts tight and the on the tracks.

For a change Ferrari strategy worked when they undercut Max with Charles even though Charles hard tires were only 10 or so laps old.

In the grand scheme of things I didn’t see or understand the point of Lando giving up the lead to Oscar. He was over 5 seconds ahead, McLaren would still have had a 1-2 finish.
IMO Lando was robbed and Oscar’s first win comes with an asterisk.
Max really STB this race! First at the start then when he went airborne trying to pass Lewis. I guess he’s back to being Crashtappen!

The reason Lando was in first was because McLaren chose to pit him first, thus undercutting his own teammate. Not sure why they were concerned with Hamilton at that point. Supposedly this had been discussed at the team meeting, but it really f'd them both up. If they pitted OP first, he drives off to victory. Why they chose to do it this was is a mystery.

And, it's fun watching Max struggle after being so dominant.

Yeah, 5 seconds was too far to be swapping positions, but the request to swap was made as soon as Oscar was pitted. McLaren really need to work on their strategy. Sooner or later both drivers are going to start questioning their decision and they will end up like Ferrari with messages like "Copy/We are checking/We will discuss later" etc.

I am all for the comedy club interaction though 😀

As for Max, I think he was frustrated all weekend with the upgrades not working as expected and lost his cool during the race and stopped following Gianpiero's information. RedBull as a team faltered badly this weekend, which is sad for me to see as a RedBull fan 🫨

I still think it should have been Lando in P1. I rewatched it last night because as I needed to hear all the messages from the pit wall begging and almost threatening LN to back off. It was ridiculous to listen to them after the fact.
FWIW, I’m a longtime Scuderia Ferrari fan, so I’m still hoping that they can fight back.

With the gap that Lando had established he should have been allowed to win but I am getting tired of McLaren shafting Oscar for every strategy call. Their call to pit Lando first is what put them in the situation.

I have only been following F1 after watching Drive to Survive in early 2022. Win or lose I like the feistiness that RedBull bring to the sport being a fuzzy drinks company. For me the funniest moment from DTS was the exchange between Horner and Attiboule (sp?) after Renault signed Daniel and RedBull had decided to drop Renault as engine supplier - . Sometimes they do go over the board, especially Horner but I also think it’s TP job to protect the rest of the team.

Zak Brown has taken a page out of Wolff and Horner’s on how to play mind games this year. We will see how well it works over the rest of the year.

I think Max will win the WDC and McLaren will win the WCC this year. The only way McLaren loses WCC is if Checo starts finishing in the top 5 the rest of the year. I do not understand what goes on with Checo every year. The first couple of races he is great, as soon as the European races start he seems to lose steam and picks up after summer break. I hope he does that this year again or he might get replaced, even with a new contract. RedBull could make him drive for Visa CashApp and either move Yuki or Daniel up. I would love to see Yuki in RedBull.

I get that it’s for the team and Oscar is a great rising star in the sport but “team orders” get ridiculous at times.
I’m sure Lando had every intention to slow eventually but it seems like he was first being all “hey Zac, look what I can do!”
The Checko thing is kinda nuts. As soon as he was resigned with RB his races went to shit!

Wow, what a race yesterday. Strategy calls, good racing for points. Surprise results for Mercedes and Ferrari, who thought they were slower than McLaren and RedBull.

Unfortunate for George when he got disqualified after the winning the race. I am not exactly sure what Mercedes were thinking about.

Hamilton, drove a great race and picked up the win after George's disqualification. Oscar, is starting to be more consistent while minimizing mistakes. Charles, drove the race the best he could with the car he had. I do not know what to think of Lando any more. He is a great driver once he gets going but the amount of times he has blown his starts leaving him in a hole to dig out off are starting to pile up.

RedBull, paid the penalty going in with more downforce for Max's car so they could minimize grid penalty by qualifying for pole on Saturda but why did they use the same setup for Checo's car. If he had the medium size downforce wing he might have done better with straight line speed. I was sure that Lando would pass Max on track after pitting for brand new hard tires but Max was able to keep him behind on older medium tires. Max getting in DRS range of Charles helped a lot at the end.

Looking forward to Dutch Grandprix in August after the summer break.

Carlos, signing for Williams was a surprise for me. I thought Mercedes would definitely sign him unless they have already made a decision to sign Antonelli.

As for Sauber and Alpine management shakeup the less said the better, especially Alpine. I think that team is going to be sold as soon as they sign contract with Mercedes for engine. If that happens I see them being sold. Sooner Renault Group get's out of F1 better in my opinion.

Binotto is back in Formula 1 as Audi head honcho. I wonder if James Key is going to be let go soon from Sauber.

Out of the blue, my daughter has become REALLY into F1. She was at a an Irish Dance competition this w/e. We watched qualifying while my wife did her hair. On Sunday, we watched the race while she applied makeup. 🙂

It appears to be an Instagram thing. She hasn't watched Drive to Survive.

I've totally ignored F1 for years but it is pretty cool, especially this year.

Yeah, my younger enjoys watching it and talking about it. My older one was not interested until she attended Montreal this year and now she enjoys it. She does not get a chance to watch the race live due to work. My two young nieces are also keen on it so we have a group chat to discuss all things F1. We have 2 Ferrari fans, 1 McLaren and 1 RedBull in the group, with one still needs time to decide. I would also have to say the 2 Ferrari fans are rethinking their choices 😀
