Formula 1 - 2024

First race in a while where there was some good fighting up front. A true rarity these days. Once again, amazing how one safety car can change the results. Not in Lando's favor this time around.

Lando, could have still won if they had not gone around for 2 lap after safety car. I think McLaren got cocky with the 11+ second gap that Lando had on Max thinking they will be able to pull further ahead and come out in front. When he came out of the pits he was slipping and sliding while Max had tires in the right temp. window.

Still would have been a close call, but might have been better.

Yep, but would have made for even closer race. I felt bad for Albon, the guy drives the Williams to it's potential and finish in the top 10 but ends up at the wrong place and time to be taken out by Carlos. Similar to what happened to Hulkenberg in Monaco when Perez clipped Nico.

Pretty good race, I would’ve loved to see Russell win just to stick it to the Lulu fanboys. I can’t believe the shit weekend Ferrari had after their Monaco weekend went so good for them.
@dvaidya , how is the Montreal track from a fan perspective?
I would love to go there for the race. I’ve been to Indianapolis twice for the F1 race when it was there.

@mwlikesbikes (Mike) I really enjoyed the race at Montreal and plan to go again.

Pro of the track
  • Easy to get to from home. It was 6/7 hr drive. What we ended up doing was drive to Plattsburgh after work on Thursday night and drive the rest Friday morning. I am glad we did it that way because they only had two lanes open at the border crossing going into Canada. Next time I am going to take the truck lanes for border crossing if allowed, which did not have any lines.
  • Getting to the track was easy by taking the Metro from Berri-UQAM station to Jean-Drapeau metro station and walking about 10/15 minutes to get to grandstand 31 near turns 8/9. The seats that we had were close to the track so we got good views of driver error. I actually got a great video of the Bottas going off in FP1 and his recovery to prevent ending up in the wall. Saw lots of drivers missing the braking point for turn 8 and needing to take the escape route to 9.
  • We got to walk on the track after the race, but by the time we made to the podium area the ceremony was done which was ok.
  • There were lines to get through the track security and ticket check but it quick so no complaints.
  • You are allowed to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages with you.
  • Purchase the 3 day metro card which allows unlimited use of public transportation both bus and metro.
Con’s of the track
  • Hotels were price gauging. The rates were 3 times their normal rate for the weekend. Next time we go, I plan to stay in the city instead of near the airport.
  • When it was raining on Friday, they decided to prevent folks from taking the metro and say all activities were cancelled which turned out to miscommunication between the track organizer and Montreal Police. We got around that problem by basically saying that we were taking the metro to the next stop and getting off at Jean-Drapeau stop.
  • The rain created a lot muddy area which you had to walk through to get to grandstands.
  • The bathroom facilities are porta potty, with long lines and with amount of folks involved were not clean, which left us bit dehydrated. Did not want to drink water to avoid using porta potty. For Saturday and Sunday we basically made sure we were prepared, but it was still uncomfortable.
I am really generalizing here but I am not exactly sure what’s up with French speaking area but the I found the public service sector employees rude as hell. The police were unhelpful on Friday when they basically shutdown the metro to the track. If you speak French it will be helpful because all of the announcements were in French for all the metro stops which I was ok with because I had a metro map along with me so I could get off at the right station.

Let me know if you want any additional information.

Any downtown festivities in the evenings? I've been to two races in Montreal, once in the early 2000s, one around 2010, and one of the highlights for me was definitely the overall atmosphere in the city. When the weather is nice, it's also a beautiful venue, but agree with everything that you've said about the Metro, mud, and overall friendliness of some of the people in charge of logistics.

I believe there were activities but we did not participate. Every day we basically went to track and back, since we were taking public transportation from hotel to airport to downtown which was on average hr each way. Definitely staying in downtown next time around though so we can check those out.

I know that one of the years we stayed out by the Olympic Park and took the metro everywhere, although that was still a bit of long ride. Definitely worth staying closer to downtown but yeah the costs get crazy in a hurry.

Honestly, the metro part is doable, it was the bus to airport and airport to hotel shuttle that was difficult. If you miss the metro you have to wait 5 minutes but the other 2 were like 20/30 minutes apart or they do not show up at all. Saturday evening we walked around downtown for a bit after qualifying and got to the bus stop 10 minutes before the bus was supposed to arrive but we waited 40+ minutes for the airport bus to show up. Google maps kept telling us we missed 2 bus 😱

So who is ready for Barcelona Grand Prix this weekend? Are we going to see regular scheduled program with RedBull in the front or will McLaren give them a hard time. Will Ferrari recover from the disaster in Montreal? Will Mercedes still be fast in hotter weather? Mercedes speed seems to disappear as soon as the temperature goes up.

Hopefully, Checo will be more consistent so RedBull can collect all the constructors points they can.

Good race, Barcelona is a good mix of curves and speed. Sucks that Lando blew the start but I’m glad that he recovered to second at least.
I think that Checko is on cruise control now that he’s got a new contract.
At least the Ferraris finished where they started…

I enjoyed watching the race yesterday and qualifying on Saturday. It was a very close qualifying and race. What a start from George, 😱. I think McLaren blew the strategy again, along with the delay in pitstop compared to RedBull. If the pitstop times were closer to RedBull's, Lando would have been within second or so. As for Checo it did not help that he had to serve 3 place grid penalty from Montreal. He needs to step it up though. He needs to end rest of the year in the top 5 for the rest of the year otherwise RedBull is going to lose WCC.

That certainly was an unexpected result! Sucks for Lando, I think he could’ve gotten past Max if they would’ve played nice.
Great for George though. Good momentum for him going into his home race next week.
Lewis who???

It was one of the better weekends for racing. Both the qualifying and race (sprint and Grand Prix) was enjoyable. Lots of battle up and down the field.

Unfortunate error from Max which ruined both his and Lando’s race. I think he was a bit too aggressive and should have just played it a bit safe with Lando having 5sec penalty for track limits. I will have to rewatch but I think stewards were slow announcing the track limit penalty which I believe popped up after the incident.

George was at the right place at the right time to take advantage of the error.

It was also a rare error from Redbull pit crew with the slow stop which allowed Lando to get within DRS range. When both decided to put Max was almost 7sec ahead of Lando and after our stop he was less than 2sec with brand new mediums on Lando’s car vs used mediums on Max.

Edit: it’s going to be spicy at Silverstone next weekend.

Great Sprint Race. Great Main Feature even with the short track.

Max is totally at fault and I think mostly because he's always out in front and forgets how to race.

The Alpines going wheel to wheel is also fun to watch.

Even though I'm not a fan, I thought Hamilton ran a good race as well.

No doubt Max at fault. That collision was waiting to happen even before that lap. One of the previous laps Max was on the outside and Lando was on the inside at the same turn and Max went off track to avoid collision. I think if Lando had done the same thing (I know hard to do at the level that they were driving at) he would have won. Max would have gotten 10sec penalty for running Lando off track. With Lando not finishing he fell behind in drivers championship. Lando still has a chance but there has to be a lot of bad results for Max to lose it. I think RedBull and Max are going to opt to take the engine penalty in Belgium and possibly in Monza or Brazil.

It almost happened in the sprint race also when Lando passed Max, with Max avoiding hitting Lando's car. Lando going wide allowed Oscar to pass Lando and the rest is history.

Yep, Hamilton's race was basically let me collect points, similar to George and ended up collecting the win.

Two great races back to back. Any of the top 5 in qualifying had a chance to win but Lewis won for the 9th time at Silverstone. Good recovery drive from Max. McLaren screwed up again with strategy for both drivers but Oscar was royally screwed when he was not double stacked. If McLaren had gotten the strategy right they had 1/2 finish on the card but ended up with 3/4. Lando also missed is pitbox during the last pitstop and compounded that error by selecting used soft tires instead of the brand new mediums.

Outstanding drive from Nico to come in 6th. That Haas is coming along nicely. Good to see the bottom half of the teams like Haas, Williams and Visa CashApp picking up points when they are available.

George was unlucky with the water pump issue which forced him to retire. As for Alpine what can I say. How the heck can you not notice gear box issues when you practically change every engine component on Gasly's car.

Poor drives from Charles and Sergio.
